A great mobile offering just got even better, as Gunman Clive emerges as one of the best platformers on the 3DS.
A stunning masterpiece of a platform game, with so many different styles that are well loved from over the years, all tightly pieced together and expertly delivered by a developer with a clear strong talent in this genre. With a wonderful art style, amazing music, superb variety in the platform stakes, the only thing preventing this from a higher score is the longevity. However, at such a low price, it is impossible to not recommend Gunman Clive to all 3DS owners!
Gunman Clive is a brief experience, but still one well worth experiencing if you’re looking for a fine $2 platformer on your 3DS. The stellar game design is emboldened by the three different characters you can play as. From start to finish, Gunman Clive is a fantastic platformer, good enough that it is worth playing multiple times to play as every character.
Gunman Clive is kind of the ideal downloadable title. It offers a good challenge, visuals that you won’t find in a retail package, and, most importantly, it’s a lot of fun. While the short length is a bit of a turn-off, the diversity in the game’s three playable characters should add some extra incentive to revisit the game. I know I already plan on it. I’m hoping we get a sequel or some downloadable content, though, because I’m not ready for Clive and Ms. Johnson to mosey off into the sunset just yet.
Gunman Clive offers terrific run and gun action at a steady tempo, with distinctive and gorgeous audio and visual presentation. It borrows memorable elements from classic franchises, but has its own physics and mechanics to go with its unique sense of style. With such a small development team — of two — it's remarkably polished and comes at a budget price, and our only complaint is that it's over all too soon. Such is the enjoyment on offer, however, we suspect a number of gamers will happily replay the short stages over and over, and we expect Mega Man-style perfect runs to become a YouTube fixture in the future.
That said, the game is still a steal at $2. Fans of 2D action platformers need to check it out. If Hörberg Productions is ever graced with the opportunity to develop a mainline Mega Man game, I'm confident that fans of the series would be happy with the results.
The game is undeniably lovingly made, but it's also disappointing brief. It's - yep - the fastest fun in the west.
Gunman Clive is an interesting platformer that justifies its lack of plot and significant depth with an amazing presentation, some strong level design, a lot of charm and a very low asking price, making it easy to recommend.
