LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean boasts all the best features of previous LEGO games: a whimsically satirical sense of humor, simple controls, vast environments to explore with tons of secrets to discover, and a huge cast of playable characters to collect and use in free-play levels. While you get your fair share of combat here, the focus definitely feels like it has been put on exploration and puzzle-solving (which seems appropriate for pirates). Each level contains a number of buried treasures that Captain Jack will need to use his compass to track down; some of the hidden items are necessary in order to move the story forward, while others are just to add more treasure-hunting fun.
I bought my 3DS not based on its launch titles, but what would be coming in the next few months, like I imagine a lot of people did. We all know that the eShop, Resident Evil and Zelda won’t be here until June, and the launch titles have already worn out their welcome. The 3DS game drought has made the wait for the anticipated titles even more excrutiating, and, admittedly, that is part of what makes Lego Pirates of the Caribbean so fun and refreshing. The game looks fantastic, plays great and gives the player a ton of stuff to collect and unlock. I might hate the source material, but this is the 3DS gem everyone has been waiting for. If nothing else, it will keep you occupied until Nintendo’s wave of June releases.

IGN (May 11, 2011)
LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean is in its top form on the 3DS. Despite the lack of cooperative multiplayer, it’s a simple but fun portable gaming experience. The 3D really is a big addition in this case, as well, allowing you to see environments more clearly and complete jumps that would otherwise be much more difficult. And with the small number of 3DS games on the market right now, you could certainly do worse than LEGO Pirates.
A nice take on the Pirates films, but it's too simplistic for seasoned gamers.
The Video Game Critic (Jul 04, 2012)
The stages are shorter and less frustrating however, making this a nice title for those looking for some casual fun.
Game Shark (Jun 23, 2011)
LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean stays the course for the series, providing consequence-free gameplay for younger gamers while giving older ones some simple – but not mindless – fun to busy themselves with. The game takes advantage of more system features than your average Nintendo 3DS title, but they don’t add much to the complete package. There’s nothing in here that transforms the LEGO experience for the better or worse, but it may be the best Pirates of the Caribbean game produced thus far.
NintendoWorldReport (Jun 01, 2011)
LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean is a fun, if incredibly easy, single-player action game for the Nintendo 3DS which actually makes good use of the 3D. If you are looking for a fun diversion on your new handheld, it’s a game that may very well fit the bill.

Pocket Gamer UK (May 16, 2011)
As far as film tie-ins go, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean is easily one of the better ones, but it's doesn't compare so well to the other Lego tie-ins.
Nintendo Life (May 19, 2011)
LEGO: Pirates of the Caribbean is, for the most part, an enjoyable addition to the series and a fun experience. The level design and lack of difficulty make this particularly suitable for less experienced or casual gamers while potentially disenchanting seasoned players. There are some disappointments, including lack of co-op play, less levels and shorter story sequences than the home console versions, as well as some presentational hitches. However, this title is packed with fan service, unlockables and replay value, as well as undeniable charm and humour. All in all, this can be a fun, sometimes even swashbuckling adventure.
Digital Chumps (May 22, 2011)
I fully realize this is for the younger gamer that enjoys more collection/customization, but I expected just a bit more action in this game like I experienced in the console versions. The modifications and cuts from the bigger console versions really made a difference, as there is just a bit more 'dull' in the 3DS version. It's still fun, but not as fun as it could be.

Whilst LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game has some fantastic ideas included that help make it appeal to all audiences, at the same time there is far too much retreading of old ground during the adventure and the overall challenge is considerably lacking, thus relegating this to a ‘rent first’ type of game.

GameSpot (May 11, 2011)
You could complete all four stories in as many hours if you don't linger, though every level is filled with secrets that are accessible only by returning to them in free play. You can also create your own character using a selection of body parts, weapons, and special skills, which brightens up your return visits. But even then, you must still go through the motions of solving puzzles that aren't puzzles and cutting down enemies that have no sense of self-preservation. Lego Pirates of the Caribbean is adorable, but it takes a lot more than a cheeky attitude to gain infamy on the high seas.

I don't want to tear this game apart, as it truly is a fun experience for the first three films, but I cannot, with good conscience, recommend this game at the price of $40. For the content you're getting, spare the bugs (and the entire fourth movie, for that matter), your money would be much better spent elsewhere, even on LEGO Star Wars. I cannot say who this game is for overall. LEGO fans will be the most disappointed seeing the limitations placed on the team that can usually create fun, complete experiences; Pirates fans will be disappointed in that a series they like received such neglect on the 3DS; and 3DS fans looking for a new game will be disappointed that they did not pick up another hidden gem. It could be considered a guilty pleasure for someone like myself, but I cannot look anyone in the eyes and say this game is truly "good".
Gamekult (May 18, 2011)
