Mario is missing, and some toy has taken his place.

My mind was taken back to another cross-platform classic with a superb creativity bent – the astonishing Sound Shapes, which still regularly gets airtime in my household to this day. Tipping Stars looks set to remain a regular fixture in much the same way, and as such, is rather essential for the puzzle game fan.

Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars is a lovely little puzzle game with the potential for a lot of content. Designing levels is best on the Wii U GamePad, whilst playing the game is most enjoyable on the 3DS. Fortunately, players get both games for the one purchase, so everyone’s a winner.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars is a good new game in the series. Nothing more, nothing less. The gameplay really hasn’t introduced much new but the Miiverse level sharing functionality hopefully will give it more legs. The ability to own both the 3DS and the WiiU versions of the game with a single purchase is nice, at least.

An entry that doesn't add much to the formula.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars is an enjoyable and involving puzzle game, particularly for younger gamers, which despite its relatively short campaign has a number of tricks up its sleeve to guarantee that you’ll be returning to it many months later. The level editor is a great example of empowering players with clear and solid tools, which allow you to to work creatively and effectively without being hampered by overly complicated systems.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars is not bad. It is essentially Mini-Land Mayhem! with visual and technical upgrades. It never instills any sense of wonder or accomplishment, and it often feels more like work than play. It's a very paint-by-numbers affair; for a puzzle game it doesn't actually require much thinking, only doing. It is a game that exists, and that's about as much as there is to say about it.
