Nintendo Life (Sep 12, 2017)
Don’t be fooled by the connection to Metroid II: this game has been revamped, redesigned and rejuvenated to such an extreme degree that to all intents and purposes it’s a brand new adventure. This is far and away one of the best Metroid games ever made, and one of the best examples of the entire Metroidvania genre as a result. Melee counters and free aiming have made combat feel fresh and exciting again, while the environments are incredible – especially when viewed in auto-stereoscopic 3D. It’s a given that this is a must-buy for Metroid fans, but it’s also essential for those who’ve never played a 2D Metroid and want to see what the fuss is all about. This is what the fuss is all about, and the wait was so, so worth it.

Game Rant (Sep 12, 2017)
Still, as the name of the game implies, Metroid: Samus Returns is a homecoming for one of Nintendo’s most beloved heroes, and it’s a return to form that many had been anticipating for years. To revisit something said at the beginning of this review, it has been 13 years since Samus starred in a side-scrolling shooter and after playing through this latest title it’s odd to think of any rational reason as to why she ever left.

While it is the hardcore Metroid fans that will get the most out of Metroid: Samus Returns, the various additions to the game (many of which are optional) make it perhaps the most accessible Metroid game for newcomers, and even grab the interest of the Metroid naysayers. Varying difficulty levels and plenty of secrets will ensure that players old and new will have plenty to do for many hours after their first run through. Despite this being based on an old game, Samus Returns is a fresh, new experience that will undoubtedly bring legions of new fans, which is quite handy considering a new Metroid game is on the way. While we wait, Metroid: Samus Returns will do nicely.

IGN (Sep 12, 2017)
While it’s been marketed as a remake of Metroid II: The Return of Samus for Game Boy, Metroid: Samus Returns is more of a much-needed reboot of the 2D Metroid games we know and love. It’s a safe, modern take on Super Metroid, one of the greatest games of all time. Aside from some repetitive boss fights and hand-cramping controls, it’s nearly everything I could ask for as a fan of old-school Metroids.

Video Chums (Sep 12, 2017)
Complaints aside, there's no denying that Metroid: Samus Returns is an addictive and rewarding remake of a classic game. It's certainly not as good as other 2D entries in the series but what's here is sure to tide fans over until the next Metroid releases.
Way Too Many Games (Oct 21, 2017)
Samus Returns is a very important title. It may not be the best 2D Metroid out there, nor did the 3DS itself help with its technical limitations, but this is an overall decent game that shows there is still potential to do a lot with the franchise besides making titles for the Prime series. While I still think AM2R was a somewhat more enjoyable experience (even though it was just an unofficial fan game), I won’t deny the fact I’m glad Samus Returns is a thing. I’m glad Nintendo listened to fan demands for once. I didn’t find it anywhere near as enjoyable as the other 2D titles from the last decade like Zero Mission or Fusion, but I really hope it does sell well enough to let Nintendo know people want more Metroid. If only it were released for the Switch.
The Game Hoard (Jan 11, 2018)
Metroid: Samus Returns was made as a return to form for the Metroid series, and in that department, it certainly succeeded. Samus is back to shooting baddies on a two-dimensional plane and it’s got most of the aspects of that gameplay style that made it enjoyable in previous titles. However, new additions help this game feel fresh even though it is trying to revive the old gameplay style, allowing it to stand as something unique rather than just a rehash. All the additions to exploration, accommodations for difficult challenges, and the more interesting combat mechanics make Samus Returns fun… but it’s hampered by the fact it is a remake of a flawed title. A desire to remain faithful to Metroid II: Return of Samus leads to most of the game’s flaws, and it is held back because of it.
StopGame (Sep 26, 2017)
