Nintendo Life (Oct 29, 2013)
If Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy really is the end of an era, it's a fitting sign-off. Hershel Layton and his companions have been wonderful additions to the DS and 3DS systems, bringing gracious simplicity and charm with each release. This concluding entry captures the best of the new and old, and is indispensable to fans of the franchise. Farewell Professor, you truly have been a gentleman and a scholar.
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy is an amazing conclusion to the beloved puzzle series. Its variety and clever storytelling make it the most interesting and well-executed installment of the franchise, and it’s nice to see that after six games, Level-5 can keep surprising players with intriguing, surprisingly moving plots and hundreds of clever puzzles. I’m sorry to see the main series end, but if it must, this is exactly how to do it.
IGN (Nov 11, 2013)
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy brings a great series to a close in fine style. It doesn't take many risks with the established formula, but its story is engaging, intelligently written and compelling to the end.

Professor Layton bows out (for now) with his biggest and most adventurous puzzle-solving drama yet. If you’ve played the previous titles then you can pick up the latest entry in confidence. It’s another elegant compendium of conundrums held together by a brilliant Layton tale. If you haven’t then this isn’t the game to start with, but it is a fitting climax before the curtain falls.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Nov 27, 2013)
Destructoid (Mar 10, 2014)
All in all, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy turns out about how fans of the series would expect. Over the course of the 25-hour campaign, players will enjoy charming dialogue from beloved characters alongside puzzles that run the gamut between boring and thought-provoking, all gussied up with top-notch art and animation. What it does to differentiate itself from previous entries in the series is mostly superficial, but Layton fans and puzzle lovers do not really need or want a great departure for the series. All we want is a puzzle-solving adventure, and Azran Legacy delivers a good one.
The Verge (Feb 27, 2014)
The continued adventures of a puzzle-loving archaeology professor from London and his young apprentice are nothing if not charming. But, in terms of how it plays, it's almost identical to every other Layton game before it. Across six games and two platforms, the series has barely changed at all. So why can't I stop playing it?
