While we professional video game reviewers don't really have much to complain about, the recent resurgence of remakes has thrown our role as critics into disarray. As any writer knows, the intended audience should dictate the way a piece will flow, but reviews of remakes need to speak to both fans of old and those who never had a chance to encounter the original -- two entirely different crowds. And Star Fox 64 3D complicates the matter even further by taking a more complicated approach than merely upgrading textures and frame rates; the game's been completely rebuilt from the ground up, yet stays ineffably faithful to the original.
Gaming Age (Sep 13, 2011)
If you've been a fan of Star Fox for years, than this port/remake is certainly going to be worth your time. And if you've never been exposed to the series before, or your only knowledge comes from Star Fox Adventures and Star Fox Assault, I highly recommend checking this game out. It's the best Star Fox title to date, and one 3DS game that shouldn't be missed.
Star Fox 64 3D is a fantastic version of the best game in the Star Fox series. If you've already played the Nintendo 64 version to death all we need to tell you is that nothing has been ruined. The only changes made are improvements, so you'll already know this is a must-have title.
NZGamer (Sep 10, 2011)
Is it worth it otherwise? Every single cent and a whole pile extra besides. Star Fox 64 was a phenomenal game and it's even better the second time around. This is the definitive version of one of the most important games of a generation. You absolutely need this game if you have a 3DS, and if you don't have one, this game is genuinely good enough to justify looking into rectifying that. Get it. Immediately.
RetroGame Man (Jul 27, 2018)
Overall, Star Fox 64 is an excellent (and possibly the best) Star Fox game ever made. The game introduced tons of great new features to the series like new vehicles and branching paths – making it incredibly replayable! While the game has aged a bit, it is still very fun, and the 3DS remake looks fantastic! If you have a Nintendo 64, grab your rumble pack, and go save the Lylat System! Even better – grab your 3DS and play the game with even better graphics and amazing 3D effects!
Game Freaks 365 (Mar 09, 2012)
Although two of the biggest 3DS titles of 2011 are coming out in the next couple of weeks, I highly recommend that owners of the handheld go out and find a copy of Starfox 64 3D. It’s truly one of the best 3DS games on the market right now. If you were a fan of the N64 game, you enjoy flight combat titles, or you just want to re-live some of the classic moments of Nintendo’s past, look no further.
IGN (Sep 03, 2011)
This impressive remake of Star Fox 64 manages to improve upon the original without compromising the magic that made it so memorable to begin with. It’s too bad the multiplayer doesn’t support online, because otherwise it’s the perfect remake of this classic title. Even for those who played the original to death, it’s well worth the $40 price tag to see a Nintendo classic fully reimagined, and all of the additions (upgraded graphics, great new controls, etc.) make it well worth revisiting. With fast action, thrilling levels, memorable characters, and plenty of fun and laughs to enjoy, it’s a must have for any 3DS owner, and yet another prime reason to invest in the system for those still on the fence.
NintendoWorldReport (Sep 04, 2011)
If you’ve never played Star Fox 64 before, then the 3DS remake is 100 percent worth getting. This is a fantastic game, and this iteration is the definitive version. The big question with Star Fox 64 3D, though, is should people who played the hell out of the original get it. There isn't much new content in the remake, but if you’re hankering for some barrel rolls, then you should get Star Fox 64 3D. It’s a splendid update of an already great game.
Pocket Gamer UK (Sep 07, 2011)
StarFox 64 3D reminds us why we've been begging Nintendo for a proper sequel for nearly 15 years.
N-Europe (Sep 18, 2011)
Star Fox 64 3D is a game that feels perfect for the 3DS. The short game with high replayability makes it the perfect game to pick up and play and the new options to save progress between levels or to play individual medals adds further to it’s pick up and play nature. It’s very easy to play and enjoy, but it would take a huge amount of practice to truly master the game on normal mode - and then there’s the expert mode on top of that.
Everyeye.it (Sep 27, 2011)
The Escapist (Sep 30, 2011)
Overall, I'd say Star Fox 64 3D is a fantastic remake of the original game- it brings back all the fun of the classic Nintendo 64 title, gives it a shiny makeover and makes good use of the Nintendo 3DS. Despite the quirks of the small screen size and the gyro controls, I'd definitely recommend it, especially if you missed out on Star Fox 64 the first time around.
Star Fox 64 was certainly on the short list of classic games that fans were yearning for a rerelease of. The game technically holds strong with the revamped 3DS version, and the challenging gameplay hearkens back to a time when skill was a necessity for reaching the credits. The motion controls are an interesting alternative, but would have fared better on the Wii, where the screen remains fixed. And the multiplayer, while still enjoyable with friends, begs to be played with unknown adversaries. However, with so many reasons to replay each and every level a hundred times, you'll definitely get your money's worth out of this game.
ZTGameDomain (Sep 26, 2011)
Star Fox 64 3D can seem like a hard sell at $40, and believe me, even hearing what it offers I might have been likely to pass on it, but after getting in and playing it, I can safely say it is worth the price of admission. The upgrades bring new light to the game while not compromising the integrity of the original game. The multiplayer is a blast, even if it is limited and doing barrel rolls has never been this much fun, and to be honest it may never be again. For fans of the original and newcomers alike, Star Fox 64 3D is a great addition to your 3DS library.
Wiiloveit (Sep 28, 2011)
Looking at the package as a whole, Star Fox 64 3D is a great remake. Mind you, it's not quite the near-perfect remake I was hoping for, but I still love it nonetheless. It's a very replayable game with significant visual touch-ups that impress. It's a shame that the same can't be said of the audio, though. From a critical standpoint, there are some things here that prevent this from being the ideal reinvention of the classic game. But for the most part, they aren't hard to overlook. It should be obvious to anyone who has a 3DS that Star Fox 64 3D is well worth purchasing, especially if you never grew up with the original release.
Destructoid (Sep 09, 2011)
Star Fox 64 3D is a great little package, more than worthy of a purchase for fans of the genre. It lacks the scale and scope of Nintendo's other big N64 remake, but it's arguably a more compelling experience for shmup junkies like myself. The game is constant action with no filler; just constant dog fighting and high-flying arial maneuvers, with a bit of jaw-flapping, Muppet-y fun layered on top.
GameOver (Greece) (Sep 15, 2011)
Hooked Gamers (Sep 25, 2011)
Star Fox 64 3D is yet another remake of an N64 title, but this is one you shouldn't overlook. If you've only heard about it over the years and haven't had a chance to play it, now is the perfect time to do so. And ,even if you've played it before, Star Fox 64 3D merits another play-through due to its gorgeous new visuals and features. It isn't just a great remake, it's a great game that stands up well even today, and one that definitely should not be missed.
AusGamers (Sep 20, 2011)
Ultimately this is a solid, although quick, flight down memory lane. If you’re new, then welcome to the world of Lylat Wars 64 (Sorry, Star Fox 64), and if you’re an Arwing veteran, it’s time to relive the experience again. Definitely well worth the purchase.
Moments of brilliance, moments of frustration, and masses of replay value. They don't make them like this any more - they remake them.
At the end of the day I have to admit that I am surprised with how Star Fox 64 3D turned out. Nintendo has done a great job of taking a 14-year-old game and reworking it so that fans of the original will have much to enjoy while those new to the franchise will experience a game that meets today’s visual and gameplay standards. I think that the lack of online play is a feature that some would have appreciated, but the ability to play locally with friends with only a single game card does take some of the sting away. This game is definitely one that any 3DS owner should consider adding to their library, as it is solid game overall.
Game Revolution (Sep 21, 2011)
I wouldn't say I'm disappointed with Star Fox 64 3D, and it will prove to be one of the few must-haves at this point in the 3DS lifecycle, but for purists like me, there's something missing. I wouldn't trade the portability for the world, but there's still some ghostly reason to pull out the Nintendo 64 and play the game as it was originally released.
Game Informer Magazine (Sep 08, 2011)
Star Fox 64 is still a great video game, and the 3DS hardware offers improvements and useless additions equally. I enjoyed the updated visuals and 3D effects, but I wanted to turn off the gyro controls the second I used them. Once it was off, however, I found myself loving every second of the game like it was 1997 all over again. This remake might not be the AAA first-party killer app the 3DS needs, but it’s a solid piece of nostalgia for longtime fans and an exceptionally strong shooter for newcomers to the series.
3D Juegos (Sep 09, 2011)
GamingExcellence (Sep 06, 2011)
The only thing keeping Star Fox 64 3D from being a slam dunk recommendation is the amount of gameplay that you're getting for the game's 40 dollar price tag. There are many, many iPhone apps and even games available on Nintendo's own online store that will provide many more hours of enjoyment for a fraction of the price. Still, Star Fox 64 3D remains a fantastic shooting experience that is incredibly well polished and great fun to play. Considering the dearth of shooters on Nintendo's 3D system, you could do way worse than taking Star Fox and crew out for some space blasting.
Spazio Games (Sep 21, 2011)
Still one of the best on-the-rails shooters ever made and vastly superior to the modern sequels, despite some minor issues with the remake.
videogamer.com (Sep 06, 2011)
The strength of Star Fox's aesthetic counts for a lot, as it distracts you from the rather simplistic rail shooter that lies underneath. Juxtaposed with the recent resurrection of Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64 3D is no masterpiece. All the same, it's one of the best-looking games on the platform, and a respectful restoration that will please the fans. If George Lucas would only follow Nintendo's example, the world would be a happier place.
Modojo (Sep 07, 2011)
Although we would have preferred a brand new sequel, Star Fox 64 3D is a welcome addition to the 3DS library and a must play for every Nintendo fan. The game covers familiar ground, but like an old photo album, it's definitely worth a look.
GamePro (US) (Sep 09, 2011)
So while Star Fox 64 3D isn't quite worth a 3DS purchase on its own, it still has a place alongside Ocarina of Time 3D as one of the few 3DS games worth buying immediately. If you decided to spring for a 3DS at the newly-reduced price point, now is the time to make good on your purchase.
Edge (Sep 09, 2011)
As with Ocarina, at first there is a rush of nostalgia. As it fades, it’s replaced by the realisation that, in many ways, the original was the playable prototype and this is the true final product, a fantastic fit both for the hardware’s portability and feature set. No cash-in or release schedule stop-gap, this is an excellent update of Nintendo’s classic space opera.
Meristation (Sep 09, 2011)
The Telegraph (Sep 12, 2011)
Still, that’s perhaps the only glaring omission in a lovingly-crafted update that can happily sit alongside Ocarina of Time 3D as a textbook example of how older games can benefit from a modern makeover. If nothing else, as soon as those credits roll it’ll make you yearn for a brand new Star Fox game. And who knows? Perhaps that was part of the plan all along.
Star Fox 64 3D is still the hugely fun and replayable game we all remember it to be. But now it's in 3D!
Eurogamer.it (Sep 14, 2011)
D+PAD Magazine (Sep 18, 2011)
There can be no doubting he pleasure in revisiting the wonders of gaming past, and Starfox 64 3D still stands today as a beacon of impeccable design, but at this present moment the 3DS’s balance seems too heavily skewed towards looking back, retromania over reinvention. On the other hand, this is a superb package, and a robust reminder of just what the 3DS is capable of. Starfox 64 3D, then: it’s the console’s second-best game, just behind Ocarina Of Time 3D.
Jeuxvideo.fr (Sep 08, 2011)
Nintendo Life (Sep 06, 2011)
The beauty of Star Fox 64 3D is that it provides a quick pick up and play experience that is guaranteed to provide an adrenaline rush. The original was renowned for its exciting action, and this title takes that original material and enhances it with much improved graphics and a gloriously smooth frame rate. The only complaints are the lack of online multiplayer and the fact that, content-wise, this game is almost the same as the original. Yet, this release can provide thrills and addictive shoot-em-up action to both veterans and those new to the game, its irrepressible energy enough to make us forget that we’ve done it all before.
gamrReview (Sep 09, 2011)
In summation, playing Star Fox 64 3D didn’t quite recapture the magic of that first N64 experience in my brother’s room over a decade ago. While the core game has held up admirably, the additions and refinements here (barring the great graphics) are a little too subtle for me to say ‘must-have’. Don’t let that discourage you, especially if you haven’t played it before. The improved controls and graphics, action-packed campaign, and entertaining additions to multiplayer easily make the game worth a purchase and then some. All the quirks and unfortunate omissions I mentioned mean I can’t give it the very highest accolades afforded by gamrReview. That aside, it can’t be denied that this is the best version of the best game in the Star Fox franchise.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Sep 01, 2011)
It's another carefully crafted package in the manner of Ocarina 3D, then, yet the ancient quality that Star Fox 64 3D exudes only makes you wish that Nintendo was releasing a few more, you know, entirely new games. Luigi, Mario and Kid Icarus are still a few months off, for the time being. Until then, I'll be hanging out with Slippy, Peppy, and Falco - that jerk.
Cubed3 (Sep 05, 2011)
After the roaring success of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Nintendo has picked yet another classic from the days of the Nintendo 64 and successfully spruced it up for a new generation of gamers. Star Fox 64 3D manages to force its way into the new market, showing how its strong gameplay foundation from 1997 has stood the test of time to make it one of the most enjoyable titles on Nintendo 3DS so far. It may not be as updated as some may have liked, but that certainly does not prevent Nintendo from having another top quality game on 3DS now.
MMGN (Sep 09, 2011)
Star Fox 64 3D feels like it was always meant to be a handheld game. The controls are fantastic, it suits quick gaming bursts and looks amazing with a visual overhaul on the 3DS. The 3D effects have been implemented fittingly and the remastered soundtrack will please fans. The lack of online multiplayer is disappointing, especially because it is so much cheaper on the Wii’s Virtual Console, but it’s a fantastic game that deserves to be bestowed upon a new generation. If you’re looking for a classic Nintendo game to tide you over on 3DS until the original titles we so desperately crave arrive at the end of the year, this is it.
Armchair Empire, The (Oct 05, 2011)
Despite the lack of supplements, Star Fox 64 still remains one of Nintendo’s finest and most action-packed experiences; No two stages are alike, and the amount of alternate pathways and outcomes (like an ally from one stage coming to assist you in the next) allow for much replaying and experimenting for those who haven’t mastered every nook and cranny. It also remains a challenge, particularly the battles that take place in All-Range Mode (which allows you to fly around a limited 3D space), but mastery of the Arwing’s different features including braking, boosting, and barrel-rolling will lead to victory and, more importantly, fun. Hopefully with a new audience gained from this portable release, Nintendo will be given enough incentive to bring this on-rails shooter back on the rails.
In 2011, as in 1997, Starfox 64 3D isn’t a perfect game. It’s a bit on the easy side and it probably won’t amuse most gamers for more than a few hours even if they take the time to explore every route. Still, the adventures of Fox McCloud are unique enough within the Nintendo universe and polished enough compared to other rail shooters that kids of all ages should acquaint themselves with Fox McCloud and friends.
Gameblog.fr (Sep 11, 2011)
Fragland.net (Oct 22, 2011)
All in all this remake can be called succesful. The campaign is still very varied and also the gameplay has managed to stand the tooth of time. It offers a challenging, though accessible game for kids and the addition of 3D offers something extra for a title in which you get to explore space. That you can also play with four friends using only one version is a simple but welcome extra. One we would definitely suggest to those with nostalgic feelings.
Digital Chumps (Sep 12, 2011)
When Nintendo unveiled the remakes of two Nintendo 64 classics at E3 the previous two years, my initial thoughts were that the company was being lazy by rereleasing yet another few titles to cash in on gamers’ nostalgia while attempting to artificially create a lineup of games to fill the lack of 3DS games in its first year on the market. However, after seeing the games in person, I realized the need for recreating these timeless classics. Though it was a graphical powerhouse for its time, the N64 really shows its limitations when viewed nowadays. Thus, those of us who have re-experienced some of Nintendo’s N64 classics on the Virtual Console can see that many of them don’t hold up as well as games from earlier systems.
Multiplayer.it (Sep 19, 2011)

It's still a pleasure to discover (or rediscover) the varied regions of the Lylat system with this colorful cast of characters. For some, this adventure may feel a little too familiar, and it won't hold any surprises for those who have overthrown Andross in the past. And the addition of a "gyro controls" option that lets you steer the ship by tilting the 3DS adds little to the experience; it fails to offer the responsiveness of the traditional controls, and its presence is nothing more than a curiosity. Even considering the visual overhaul, $40 is too high a price for this 14-year-old game that you can buy for ten bucks on the Wii's Virtual Console. But Star Fox 64 stands the test of time, and whether you're new to this space-faring adventure or just eager to take that old Arwing for another spin, you won't be disappointed.
Worth Playing (Sep 14, 2011)
When you get down to it, Star Fox 64 3D is the very definition of cashing in. Nintendo took an old game, upgraded the graphics, added some useless "features" and then put it on the market for full price. The thing is, the original game is so good that every gamer should experience it. Star Fox was a groundbreaking title in its day, and the core gameplay still holds up to this day. If you've never played this title before, then the 3DS offers the best version of the game, but anyone who's already saved Slippy (or let him die) more times than you can count and explored every nook and cranny of the Lylat system may as well stay retired. Much like Peppy, we're all getting a little too old for this nonsense.

Star Fox 64 3D is too short and feature-deprived at $40 to satisfy newcomers while missing some of the nostalgic hooks that made its predecessor beloved.
That said, Star Fox 64 3D is recognizable as a game from another era. Its short campaign can be finished in around an hour (though it offers good replay value), the environments feel small and cramped and have low ceilings that place limitations on aerial maneuvering, and the story is threadbare and filled with one-dimensional characters. That makes its $40 price tag hard to justify, especially given that Wii owners can purchase the original -- minus this edition’s graphical and control enhancements -- for a fraction of the price through the Wii Shop Channel. It’s a good game, but it also serves as a reminder that the Star Fox license is in need of a brand new adventure.

A lack of new levels and the omission of online play definitely damages the title, but the wonderful level design, intuitive controls and addictive gameplay makes it easy to overlook such glaring faults.
