All in all, this is a tremendous game and arguably the best game available for the 3DS. The graphics are great, the gameplay is addictively fun, and the 3D is one of the best examples of the 3DS’s capabilities. Once again Nintendo delivers one of the best games on its own system, and shows the other developers their systems’ potential. This game is must-have not just for Mario fans, but for anyone who owns a 3DS.
Overall, Super Mario 3D Land alone is one of the best reasons to buy a 3DS. The gameplay is fun, creative, friendly, but also challenging at times. At this point, it is THE 3DS game that everyone was hoping for and it did not fail expectations. In fact, it is so good that it really makes me look forward to what other first-party games Nintendo will offer in the future but I don’t see how they can top this one at this time. My only criticism is that it wasn’t released earlier along with the launch of the 3DS; however, one thing is for certain the extra development time certainly payed off.
The Video Game Critic (Nov 27, 2011)
Though never spectacular, the stage designs play to the strengths of the 3DS. The 3D effect makes it easier to gauge your relative position, and when high in the air the sense of depth is more pronounced. There are even some clever optical illusions. The stages don't have a unifying theme as they do in most Mario titles, but their layouts are so inventive that you never feel as if you're doing the same thing twice. Best of all, 3D Land is consistently fun and hard to put down. It's also ideal for gaming on-the-go since the stages are brief and your progress is automatically saved. Nintendo hit a home run with this one. The 3DS was in dire need of a system-defining title, and Super Mario 3D Land fits like a glove.
TheSixthAxis (Nov 21, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land is in no huge way the most innovative thing you’ll play. It won’t grip you with its story, and it certainly won’t convert those who have little to no interest in Mario games. What it will do, however, is delight fans with its combination of fantastically designed levels, tight controls and great visuals. One of the best portable gaming experiences to date.
100 (Nov 22, 2011)
It’s this addition that elevates 3D Land to potential classic status. It’s easily the best portable Mario platformer ever made, and while it never quite reaches the dizzying heights of the two Galaxy games, it’s certainly a much tighter and focused experience and ideal for newcomers to the series. And though it may not quite vindicate the 3D screen, proving only that the display can be used to great effect when in the right hands, it does demonstrate that the circle pad is more than up to the job for 3D platformers. All that remains to be seen is whether the quality of Mario’s latest will be enough to give a boost to the flagging fortunes of Nintendo’s much-maligned portable console.
Super Mario 3D Land was designed with the intention of bringing back the "old-school" appeal that has drawn in millions of gamers over the last two decades. It delivers on that goal in droves. Ardent Mario fans will appreciate the many nods to vintage Mario titles, while everyone will become entranced by the way the 3D presentation adds a new layer of gameplay. Players can run between the background and foreground to clear obstacles and collect items in a way that truly takes advantage of the 3DS's visual capabilities. What's more, many of the levels seem deceptively easy but in reality provide intense challenges that will have players trying over and over again, making the feeling of completing each level ultimately rewarding. In short, it is a Mario game that delivers on everything players would expect from such a legendary franchise.
GamePro (US) (Nov 09, 2011)
Nintendo knows how to capture the nostalgia of their franchise, but still temper it with ideas that feel innovative. For every familiar bit of music or a level background that reminds you of Mario games past, you have new abilities to use and deviously designed platforming sections that feel completely unique. And for once, I actually preferred playing a game in 3D. Sure, it's still slightly tiring on my eyes and it significantly cuts down the length of time I can play at a stretch, but the short stages always make you feel like you're making progress, no matter how little time you invest. The tired, princess-saving formula never seems to change, but somehow Nintendo makes every visit to the Mushroom Kingdom feel like the first time.
Modojo (Nov 09, 2011)
Is it more imaginative than Super Mario Galaxy? No. Will it revolutionize gaming like Super Mario 64. Hardly. Do either of these questions matter? Absolutely not, and don't let anyone prove otherwise. Super Mario 3D Land is the epitome of fun. Most importantly, it's a shining example of everything that's good and wholesome about video games. If you own a 3DS or intend to purchase one in the future, be sure to buy Mario along with it.
The Telegraph (Nov 11, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land is far from the most challenging of the Mario platformers, although much like Galaxy the challenging elements are there for anyone who wishes to be pushed a little harder. The main section won't challenge Mario veterans too hard, but that's the beauty of Mario. He's at his best when you're pulling off a series of flawless leaps and bounds, the pixel-perfect controls making way for displays of sheer skill. The charm, inventiveness and knowing nods to Mario heritage bring constant smiles, and it's not only a superb Mario game but a fantastic advert for the hardware it appears on. A perfect starting point for newcomers to the series, or a nostalgic throwback for Mario die-hards that still manages to be incredibly contemporary. Whichever category you fall into, one thing's for sure; handheld platforming simply does not get better than this.
The Guardian (Nov 21, 2011)
How does Nintendo do it? Every other year the Japanese publisher releases another Mario platforming title, and every single time it does, the result is brilliant.
100 (Nov 22, 2011)
Game Revolution (Nov 15, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land is one of the best Mario games in recent memory. It’s better than New Super Mario Bros. and just about on par with Galaxy. A few months back I stated that Ocarina of Time 3D was the premier reason to own a 3DS. That is no longer the case. Mario is still Nintendo’s man to move hardware, even if he is a bit late to the party.
Digital Spy (Nov 18, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land takes the celebrated template of the Super Mario Galaxy games to create Mario's best handheld game in years, and even when put up against his acclaimed console offerings, is yet another sublime adventure crammed with surprises and smiles every few minutes. It's also perhaps the first 3DS title that makes the screen an integral part of the game rather than an eye-catching afterthought. An essential purchase for any 3DS owner, it should also be the nudge those on the fence need to invest in the system.
100 (Nov 16, 2011)
Retroage (Jan 21, 2012)
Gamegravy (May 11, 2012)
I’ve been a Mario fan almost as long as I’ve been a video game fan. His adventures are always top notch, and Super Mario 3D Land doesn’t break that streak. From the great level design to the catchy music, this is yet another example of what a video game should be. Though not perfect, Super Mario 3D Land is undoubtedly a system seller. Bottom line, if you own a 3DS, you should own this game.
GamezGeneration (Nov 19, 2011)
It‘s a me Mario!
GamesCollection (Jan 13, 2012)
FATELO VOSTRO!!!
Game Over Online (Dec 08, 2011)
3D Land delivers an experience that will satisfy long-time fans of the franchise while also making it accessible enough for newcomers to enjoy. The core game is incredibly fun, and gives you more variety than many Mario games. The scaling-down of the series’ console 3D gameplay to fit the small screen has seemingly enabled more creativity within the levels themselves, and it makes for a much fresher experience on the go. Whereas New SMB felt like an homage to the past, this feels like a truly contemporary game that is the new gold standard for 3D platformers on a portable.
Good Game (Nov 15, 2011)
Even though it's taken almost 8 months to finally see an original Mario game on the system, Nintendo has stuck to what they do best and combined the 3DS' tech with brilliant level design to create one of the most iconic Mario games ever - and EASILY one of the best titles on the 3DS! I'm giving it 9.5/10 rubber chickens.
IGN (Nov 09, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land represents the first 3DS title to fully make use of the system’s capabilities. With an expertly balanced difficulty progression, dazzling level design and masterful Power-Ups, this is the ideal 3DS experience. Most of the first eight worlds fly by a bit too quickly, but with extra content you unlock afterward, medal challenges in each level and StreetPass allowing you to best your friend’s times, you’ll still find plenty of replay value here. As an experience, Super Mario 3D Land gets deeper the longer you play, as you sink into its particular groove and learn to appreciate it as a unique title - one that is separate from yet beautifully derivative of the entire Mario franchise. As a whole, 3D Land is brilliant and addictive, and should do for 3D-enhanced platforming what the original Super Mario Bros. did for 2D platforming. If you own a 3DS system, you have no choice - you simply must own this game.
NintendoWorldReport (Nov 09, 2011)
EAD Tokyo’s 3DS debut is marvelous, and filled with almost endless creativity. The control and graphical quirks are a little off-putting, but more because we’re so accustomed to 3D and side-scrolling Mario being separate things. Super Mario 3D Land combines the two, and it works well. If you own a 3DS, you should likely get this game. It’ll last you a long time, and it’s a great new Mario game.
95 (Nov 21, 2011)
Game Informer Magazine (Nov 09, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land isn’t perfect, but the few complaints I have (like the lack of variety in boss fights and some re-hashed levels) can’t bring down this entertaining mix of nostalgia and innovation. It lives up to the level of quality set by previous entries and is easily the best reason to own a 3DS.
Game Freaks 365 (Nov 13, 2011)
Nintendo has managed a cool mixture of classics like Super Mario Bros. 3 and the more recent Super Mario Galaxy series. Super Mario 3D Land gives a humble nod to the originals while moving the franchise forward into the 21st century. Nintendo 3DS owners can relish in all of Mario’s past and present glory. Not only are the levels creatively designed as one would expect from a Mario game, they are incredibly fun to play and perfectly fit for a handheld experience. Super Mario 3D Land is the best game released on the system to date, giving gamers a strong justification for their purchase.
Digital Chumps (Nov 10, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land proves that there is still an innovative direction that platforming can take even after the constant innovation seen throughout the history of Mario. This game may not be as creative as Galaxy (really what is?) but the different camera perspectives and depth based gameplay, along with all sorts of platforming styles meshed into one game make for a worthy Mario title for the 3DS. If you're looking for the best "new" game for the 3DS (that isn't a remake), 3D Land is a must have.
Super Mario 3D Land is superb. The care and attention put into every aspect of it is beyond words and the only real problem point - the difficulty - is blown away by its remarkable post-credits reveal. This is the first truly essential, completely new title for the 3DS.
GameTrailers (Nov, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land proves that gaming’s most enduring mascot is also its most adaptable. Is the advent of affordable 3D consumer technology ultimately just a blip on gaming’s radar? Who knows. What matters is for us now is that Mario’s thriving in stereoscopic 3D. As usual, it’s because the novel tech is really just there to help punctuate what’s made Mario great all along--the timeless fundamental gameplay that’s been in the process of refinement for decades.
gamrReview (Nov 17, 2011)
They say good things come to those who wait. For those who anxiously awaited Mario to set foot on the 3DS, the reward is another fantastic entry to the proud Mario series. Super Mario 3D Land shows that after all these years, Mario still has the magic touch, and this enjoyable little romp is a great showcase for what the 3DS can really do. It is a must-own for any 3DS owner, any platforming fan, and anyone who enjoys fun.

Thunderbolt Games (Nov 30, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land is a game for everyone, young or old, casual or hardcore. It’s an easy game to get into and an easy game to latch onto. The levels are inventive, colorful and varied, constantly providing a new experience at each turn. It’s a fun, polished game, but then it’s a Mario, and I’d have expected nothing less.
90 (Dec 31, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land is another wonderfully crafted Nintendo title which offers a engaging set of worlds and levels for you to enjoy. It is a title that all 3DS owners should own or at least give a try.
Hooked Gamers (Nov 23, 2011)
When it comes down to it, Super Mario 3D Land is the very first original must-have game for the 3DS. Had it launched alongside the handheld, the 3DS probably could have been saved much of the turmoil it experienced this year. And really, that's the only real disappointment about all this; the fact that we had to wait 8 months to finally play it. But once you enter the whimsical world of 3D Land, you'll forget all about that, only to get sucked into the most engaging gameplay the 3DS has seen yet. Every 3DS owner owes it to themselves to play this game. Not only is it arguably the best Mario handheld game, but it rightly earns its place next to the greatest of the plumber's adventures to date.
Wired (Nov 09, 2011)
3D Land is a grabby borrower of a game — enemies from Mario 3, music from 2006′s New Super Mario Bros., gameplay from Galaxy. Eventually it starts borrowing from itself. It’s an excellent game because all of these things work so well together; the only thing keeping it from perfection is that it cries out for more innovations to call its own.
GamesRadar (Nov 09, 2011)
Though it falls slightly short compared to other Mario titles (aka some of the greatest games ever made), it’s certainly a release worthy of the character’s legacy. It expertly builds on franchise history, has tons of clever ideas, and even with the rare control hang-ups, it stands tall in the realm of 3D platformers, especially compared to the paltry library of games the 3DS currently has.
90 (Nov 10, 2011)
It is, then, a step back and a leap forward. As a gateway drug for those reluctant to embrace Mario in three dimensions, Super Mario 3D Land should be a huge success. And if Nintendo does manage to convince that audience, that's something for us all to be excited about. After all, next time, he won't have to wait around for anyone to catch up.
90 (UK) (Nov 10, 2011)
You could wish for 3D Land to be a little more challenging in places, then, but you couldn't wish for it to be any denser, any more imaginative, or any more daring. Most importantly, you couldn't wish for it to be any more playful.
Videogameszone (Nov 18, 2011)
The director calls it the hamburger to Galaxy's feast. Not quite. It's the Ferrero Roche to Galaxy's Toblerone. Or, if you're feeling festive, the Big Green Triangle of Mario games - delicious, but overpriced. But if you can't treat yourself at Christmas, when can you? For all its limitations, Super Mario 3D Land is never less than a treat.
Worth Playing (Nov 15, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land is easy to recommend as a must-have game for any 3DS owner's library. The graphics are impressive for a handheld, especially when you use the system's built-in 3-D. The sound and gameplay mechanics are great. With the multitude of secrets in the game, along with the big twist near the end, Super Mario 3D Land can be rightfully called "deep," even if seems easy when you start out. There's hardly a bad thing to say about the title, so Super Mario 3D Land should be in your collection.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Nov 15, 2011)
Meristation (Nov 18, 2011)
Nuevo Mario, nuevo acierto.

Joystiq (Nov 09, 2011)
And while it takes a while to build up, and lacks the rich variety of secrets you know from games like Mario 3 and Super Mario World, Super Mario 3D Land eventually becomes a demandingly hardcore, addictive platformer. It's also easily the most beautiful game on the 3DS, and one of the best-looking Mario games. The powerups are impressively squishy-looking. I also admired the metallic texture of big spiked pistons as they killed me, and the surprisingly scary animations of Bowser as he killed me.
Pocket Gamer UK (Nov 14, 2011)
Time to dust off that 3DS and let Mario do what he does best - Super Mario 3D Land is pure entertainment from start to finish.
N-Europe (Nov 17, 2011)
A brilliant entry into the much loved series, it's just a shame it has to end so soon.
GameFocus (Nov 19, 2011)
There’s a lot to like about Super Mario 3D Land. It’s easily the best 3D title that’s graced the 3DS to date, and shows that there is so much potential in the handheld. The visuals literally pop off the screen, and even when not in 3D mode, it looks amazing. Despite blowing through the first eight worlds in just a few hours, I’m still playing today. Hunting down all the coins and trying to top other people’s completion times gives it a little bit more length, and the quickness at which you can jump in and out of playing makes Super Mario 3D Land one of the most accessible Mario titles to date. If Super Mario 3D Land is merely and indication of what Nintendo has in store for 3DS owners, I look forward to the future, and hopefully, a sequel to this game very soon.
Nintendo Life (Nov 09, 2011)
It's obvious that Nintendo played it fairly safe for Mario's first 3DS outing — something that will likely make the game seem like a bit of a step backwards from the brilliance of the Super Mario Galaxy series — but it's impossible not to be impressed by the vast number of classic Super Mario elements that have been squeezed into the package, especially given how fresh they all look and feel in their new 3D presentation. If you've been looking for a reason to pick up a 3DS, you've just found it.
The Escapist (Nov 11, 2011)
Despite a few odd quirks, Super Mario 3D Land is a great 3DS game that goes back to its roots in being a solid platformer that's a blast to play, even if there's the occasional bout of dying a dozen times due to a misjudgment of leaping distance. While it would've been nice to see Mario and company in a new story other than the standard "rescue Princess Peach" plot we've seen before, the extras and secret stages more than enough make up for it.

Challenging or not, Super Mario 3D Land is really a lot of fun. The 2D/3D landscape is enough to get players on board. Even without playing this game in 3D, it can hold its own. It is the fun that only Mario knows how to provide that lets this game shine as it is easily the best game for the 3DS right now. With the 3D capabilities, it puts Mario into an area that is truly unique. The true 3D world offers an even more in depth look into our favorite video games, and Super Mario 3D Land has outdone itself in this regard. The title should generate enough interest in the 3DS to keep loyal fans happy.

Thanks to the combination of innovative features that get introduced by the 3D and on the other side the going back to earlier Mario games this episode feels different than all its predecessors. Although we miss a bit some of the wonder from Super Mario Galaxy this has again become a top title that doesn't disappoint in any way and will please young and old.

Even with its issues with ensuring you can always see in 3D (thanks to the system itself), the slightly floaty controls, and the fact that the game's a bit on the easy side, Super Mario 3D Land is exemplary of how a new Mario game should look and feel. Though they went back to basics with New Super Mario Bros. 2 in 2012, it's Super Mario 3D Land that best shows off the advantages and the perks of the 3DS system, as well as why Mario is still one of the most renowned video game series of all time.

Destructoid (Sep 11, 2011)
3D Land is a game in which Nintendo shows other developers how they've been doing it wrong since the 3DS launched, and provides a template from which future games ought to be built. Hopefully this is the beginning of a library of fine 3DS games that proves the system has got what it takes to succeed.

Which only raises further questions about the pricing, longevity and value of handheld videogame releases in the iOS age. Super Mario 3D Land will definitely put a smile on your face for a few hours, especially if you have a fondness for the series’ rich history, but this isn’t the game that will reverse the 3DS’s fortunes.

When given the task of reviewing an entry in a star-studded series like Mario, one can't simply say the game is fun, the graphics and sound are dazzling, and the controls function well. When a bar is set so high, any imperfections are much more noticeable. Super Mario 3D Land is a welcome addition to the portable's library, sure to satiate your platforming appetite, but I just can't shake the thought that had it been given a little more time in the cooker, a "Must Buy" score would have been readily handed to it.

1UP (Nov 09, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land's playful reverence for (and references to) the 8-bit days reminds us that Super Mario Bros. 3 truly was an amazing game, but it does so at the expense of its own identity. I have a hard time imagining that, 20 years from now, Nintendo's designers will be looking back at 3D Land as a template for a new game the way 3D Land builds on Mario 3's iconography. Ultimately, that's the difference between a good Mario game and a great one.

Exactly what the 3DS needed to reenergise its fortunes and restate its purpose, and even if it's not as good as Galaxy it's still the best portable Mario since the Game Boy.
Cubed3 (Nov 12, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land excels in so many areas, picking up the traditional 2D side-scrolling feel of the classic NES and SNES platform outings, whilst sprinkling in a pleasing dose of the 3D charm that made Super Mario Galaxy 2 so special. Anyone that had been hoping for a more well-rounded challenge than New Super Mario Bros. Wii need look no further, whilst those with a penchant for large open spaces for Mario to roam around in will not be totally let down either. There are some almost debilitating issues with slow pace, a lower than expected camera and pop-up, but the raw content is so delightful that it proves difficult to hold a grudge for long.
Games TM (Nov 10, 2011)
There’s a level of humour, invention and a sheer sense of joy that you only find in a Mario game. There’s the usual sprinkling of new ideas – a fresh power-up here, an original level design there – but there’s an underlying issue that the particular team behind this entry, Super Mario Galaxy’s EAD Tokyo, has set previous standards so high that even a great Mario game isn’t good enough to match them. Super Mario 3D Land is easily the best handheld Mario game, but it falls short of what previous 3D entries are capable of. And even with the substantial post-game bonus content included, these relative joys will last little more than a weekend.
Edge (Nov 10, 2011)
But there’s a joyousness here that wins out, a simple delight in the basics of running, jumping, collecting coins and bouncing into the air that leaves these mild disappointments behind, and a creative blending of Marios past and present that makes the unabashed retread that was New Super Mario Bros appear almost cynical. Super Mario 3D Land is a magpie of a game, but it fuses its 2D and 3D influences to make a Mario that feels fresher than any handheld Mario in years. It’s not a new Galaxy, but it’s an ideal companion piece to EAD Tokyo’s Wii games. Whereas they pushed up against the edge of the universe to show us what an unfettered Mario can do, Super Mario 3D Land does the opposite.
Factornews (Nov 22, 2011)

Giant Bomb (Nov 14, 2011)
Everyone seems to keep asking if this is the game that makes the 3DS worth owning, as if they're waiting for one single game to send them off to the store so they can invest in a new platform. I don't know that I'd go quite that far--the slow start burns up a lot of levels with areas that aren't particularly challenging or effective as tutorial sequences to prepare you for the rest of the game. But if you've already made the investment in a 3DS and you're looking for something--anything--that resembles a must-own game, Super Mario 3D Land is precisely that.

GameSpot (Nov 09, 2011)
Super Mario 3D Land puts the plumber though his paces with yet another search-and-rescue mission to find a missing princess. Along the way it successfully translates the classic, 2D Mario feel into a 3D setting that feels unique from the series' other 3D releases. Some of the game's other features fall disappointingly short of this creative mark, but you’re still left with a fun-filled platformer loaded with content.
The A.V. Club (Nov 21, 2011)
There are few opportunities to push in 3D Land, to stretch out and find the edge of the world, since it’s always in front of you. When you do find that edge, it’s all too common to just fall off, because there’s so little space to run. There’s fun here, and a great deal of content, with a whole second quest of new levels and remixed challenges waiting after you beat Bowser, but 3D Land is nonetheless weightless.
WiiDSFrance (Nov 17, 2011)

Honestly, if you are willing to unlock everything, you’ll get close to 20 hours of gameplay out of this one. That’s a pretty solid bang for your buck when it comes to platform games. The level design is interesting enough to keep you involved, and the challenge is good enough to make the whole experience rewarding. While I wouldn’t place this game anywhere near the top 5 of the Mario series, it is still a high-quality outing that is worth every minute you will invest in it.
