That’s about all I have to say for the new Smash for now. I am having a blast playing it, and let me tell you it was hard to rip myself from it long enough to write this beastly review. While it might sound like I have some gripes with this game, make no mistake that those are me nit-picking things I wish they did. This game is great and I love it. 10/10 for sure, and will buy again for Wii U next month (and likely write another review about that version). I give this the official APG Nation Seal of Approval. Go forth and smash some faces, Nation!
Game Freaks 365 (Oct 03, 2014)
Masahiro Sakurai and his team at Sora - along with Namco Bandai and Nintendo - have delivered the most polished and content-rich 3DS game ever released. It's a definitive, must-own title for anyone that owns the platform, especially fans of the series.
Realm of Gaming (Oct 06, 2014)
This is a game that any fan of Super Smash Bros. or Nintendo franchises in general needs to pick up. It provides many ways to play and can cater to all sorts of different players. It is also a great way to introduce players to games that they might never have checked out before. It once again shows the franchisefs strength of not only offering exciting and interesting ways to battle but also celebrating the great amounts of imagination and innovation put into their games. Players will not regret picking this game up, whether it is for the Nintendo 3DS or the Wii U.
Destructoid (Oct 02, 2014)
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS delivered just about everything I wanted out of it, and then some. I've grown attached to a number of newcomers, I've played more online matches than I ever did with Brawl, and I'll be tackling all of the single-player content for weeks on end. I'm all in again thanks to Smash 3DS, and it's made me even more excited for the Wii U version later this year.
Darkstation (Oct 06, 2014)
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is almost everything you could ask for from a portable version of Smash Brothers. It sports a huge, diverse roster of characters, a ton of new, quirky modes, and has enough collectables to keep any Nintendo fan busy for quite some time. If not for the flaws with its multiplayer, I would actually go so far as to say that it is the quintessential Smash Bros. experience on the go. I understand that people may be hesitant to buy Super Smash Bros. for 3DS with the Wii U version coming out soon, or because it's feared to be a subpar entry in the series being that it’s on a weaker handheld system, but I could not disagree more. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the series like me, or a curious newcomer, you owe it to yourself to buy this game if you have a 3DS.
Gamekult (Oct 03, 2014)
Respect.

The handheld debut of Super Smash Bros. is a successful one that stands proud alongside its predecessors on home consoles and is a must-have for Nintendo 3DS owners, with combat that feels more refined than Super Smash Bros. Brawl and can be enjoyed by casual and dedicated players alike. The roster is also the biggest and best one yet, and the production values are outstanding. While it's still unclear what the upcoming Wii U version will have and how the two versions will interact with each other, those who really value much better graphics and more control options - such as the Nintendo GameCube controller that can be used with a special adapter - might want to wait for it instead. Anyone else, though, definitely shouldn't hesitate to get a copy of this game to settle it in Smash.

Smash Bros for 3DS is a must have for Smash fans, for casual players it's best to make sure you have friends who are also planning on getting the game or the ability to play multiplayer or it may get stale. If none of that turns you away then you'll get countless hours of gameplay out of Super Smash Bros for 3DS!
IGN (Sep 26, 2014)
Smash 3DS is impressive and, for the most part, feels right at home on 3DS. The multitude of ways to play and awesome customization gave me many reasons to keep fighting - and I’ve been at it for more than 45 hours already. It all produces a fun feedback loop of engaging in matches to unlock custom moves and trophies, then jumping into another match to try out the new stuff. Even the online modes feel carefully considered and focused on what the series does best, and what the 3DS can reasonably do. It’s a little disappointing that the four-player antics that are the best part of the console games don’t really work on a small screen, but there’s still more than enough that does work to make Smash a great 3DS game.

Overall, Super Smash Bros. has been a long time coming for the handheld systems, but the wait has paid off. Sure, playing the game on the handheld may not feel as smooth or comfortable as playing on a controller, but it's still a great way to make a trip breeze by or to kill a bit of time with just one more battle. Smash Bros. is a great title to add to the 3DS library.
Girl Gamers UK (Oct 14, 2014)
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is quite a surprise. It is quicker than the previous game in the series, packed full of content, looks and plays well, and is open to both hardcore fans and the more casual players. Above all though, it is great fun. It may be seen by some only as the support act for the yet to arrive main event that will be Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, but Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is a full, portable Smash Bros. game that can easily stand on its own.

Overall I had a enjoyable time playing Super Smash brothers on my 3DS, it’s a technological marvel and very fun game, but I still feel that this is the little brother version of the game. Super Smash Brothers for Nintendo 3DS sadly didn’t get the full polish it deserves, hopefully the online multiplayer can be patched and I will patch and update my review accordingly, but as of the time of this review it’s a well made portable game with many flaws that prevent it from reaching true greatness.
Giant Bomb (Sep 26, 2014)
With Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, Nintendo has checked many of the biggest boxes for a sequel. The roster is bigger and better, a large variety of fun stages has been added, and some cool tweaks like character customization make their debut. Spotty online offerings, the drawbacks of being on a portable console, and the lack of a substantial single-player mode hurt the overall experience, but not enough to tarnish the series’ name. If you’re a longtime fan of Nintendo (or just the Smash series in general), there’s plenty here to keep you busy until you can play it in its ideal form on the big screen.

The company has succeeded in providing a true Smash Bros. game on the 3DS, but has also ensured that Smash Bros. fans are reminded that it's the local multiplayer experience that has driven this franchise for so long. An lo and behold, that Wii U version will have that critical local multiplayer component executed to perfection. Perhaps Nintendo wanted to provide what amounts to a demo for the "true" Wii U version of Smash Bros. on the 3DS and encourage people to buy that struggling console. Perhaps it will even work, and if that's the case, hats off to a brilliant move by Nintendo. I can all-but guarantee that the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. will be game of the year based on the raw quality of how the 3DS version plays and the assumed value of the local multiplayer on the big screen. But if we were too look at 3DS version in isolation, it does miss the point of why people play Smash Bros. in the first place.
Retro Gamer (Nov 06, 2014)
There's no denying that Super Smash Bros is a tremendous technical achievement, but it's one that comes with very noticeable compromises. Our advice? Wait for the incoming Wii U release, or upgrade to a 3DS XL.
Diehard GameFan (Oct 16, 2014)
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS may have a lame title, but the game itself is everything but. The combat speed falls somewhere in between Melee and Brawl, and its massive roster somehow manages to maintain a rather solid balance. The lack of an Adventure/Story mode will be missed, but the new Smash Run helps to fill that void slightly by offering a way to power up your characters before forcing them into a showdown. The online mode is actually functional this time and offers a decent amount of options, plus you can bet money on spectated matches. It desperately needs a way to alert your friends to join your game, though this is likely more a problem with Nintendo’s online infrastructure as a whole rather than the game itself. Still, if you consider yourself a Nintendo fan at all and own a 3DS, you really need to pick this up.
