And Yet It Moves es ingenio hecho videojuego.

Like most good games And Yet It Moves leaves you wanting more, although the achievements and play modes breathe extra life into the game. Failing that it's fun turning the world upside down and flinging the protagonist around the levels. Although it may have been even better if Broken Rules kept the title as the Italian 'E pur si muove', the expression famously credited to Galileo (even if he may not have actually said it), because it has more grandeur, but that's very much a personal gripe rather than a serious one.

Broken Rules certainly lives up to its name with And Yet It Moves, and the result is an addictive and memorable puzzle-platformer sure to please anyone with an affinity for either genre. Despite losing its online capabilities, the wealth of additions and improved control options make this WiiWare release stand as the definitive version of the game and one of the better titles to hit the service. If you haven’t done so before, get it. If you have, consider double-dipping.

An impressive debut from Broken Rules, who have taken their own name literally by screwing up the rule book and trying something a little different within an established genre. The gamble pays off: with a friendly concept, striking art, and abstract-yet-believable world, And Yet It Moves presents is a worthy addition to the WiiWare catalogue.

Most people will probably look at And Yet It Moves as a cool indie WiiWare title (also available on PC and —gasp!—Mac), and form the perspective that it’s a great head-scratching puzzler/platformer. However, look just a little deeper, and you’ll find a game that questions the basic tenets of the genre we’ve been playing for thirty years. Of course, And Yet It Moves only scratches the surface of possibility, but it is a journey absolutely worth taking.

It's remarkable to find a game of such effortless brilliance showing up in such an unheralded fashion. Similar to Limbo's rather low-key arrival on Xbox Live Arcade last month, games like And Yet It Moves add weight to the growing feeling that the indie scene has never been such a vibrant and exciting place to explore. It also inspires a mute sense of frustration that mediocre boxed games in done-to-death genres get all the marketing dollars, but that's another story. The public gets what the public wants, apparently. The fact that games hell-bent on breaking all the rules appear to be showing up on an increasingly regular basis across multiple download channels is genuinely heart-warming. If, for whatever reason, you missed out on its PC release last year, or have held off buying a WiiWare title, now is definitely the time to make amends. At this price, there's no excuse not to reward Broken Rules for its fine efforts. And if you're still not convinced, just watch the game in action.

The biggest complaint I have is none of the puzzles are very taxing on the brain. That doesn’t mean you won’t have some trouble with the game, but the troubles are more with getting from point A to Point B than they are with trying to figure out what to do or where to go. But, if puzzle-platforming is your thing, And Yet It Moves is a solid effort that should have no problems finding a place in your game library. Great level design, improved controls over its PC brother and interesting visuals bring a fresh feel to the genre that easily makes it worth the price of admission, regardless of its flaws.

If you missed the PC version of this game last year, then you need to pick up And Yet it Moves for WiiWare (if only to support small artistic indie developers that are actually innovating). It's a fun puzzling platformer that bleeds life into the genre. It is short, despite some unnecessary level padding, but definitely worth the price tag.

Like its puzzle-platform peers mentioned earlier, And Yet It Moves is a true original and, short-lived as it may be, those few short hours showcase more ideas than most full price releases can boast.

And Yet It Moves offers both style and substance – when you’re not gawping at the visual insanity that’s gracing your TV screen or soaking up the twitchy, shuffling electro soundtrack, you’re wracking your brain on how to overcome the next obstacle, continuingly having to master new tricks and calling on skills already learnt. While it may be a touch on the short side, it is still a game that has been crafted with a clear and uncompromising vision and we’re happy that it has found a new home and – hopefully – a new audience on the Wii. If you have any interest at all in challenging and original game design, it really is more than worthy of your attention.

If you’ve already played the PC version, then I’m not sure if the additional three levels and Wii control setup will be enough to sway you to double dip, but for those who mainly stick to console play and haven’t, and love the genre, definitely pick this up as soon as you can. It’s only $10 and while it doesn’t offer up many levels, it does offer up a lot of replay value with a time trial mode and delivering a game that is simply fun to replay no matter how many times you’ve overcome its obstacles.

AYIM isn't the cream of the crop of all the great downloadable games that are coming out these days, but it's definitely up on the roster.

Proof that WiiWare can be a genuinely interesting and innovative service, with the best version yet of this imaginative and innovative indie platformer.

Broken Rules is a small developer that focuses on downloadable games, and it has crafted a very enjoyable experience with its debut game, given the time and resources it has to work with. We hope this isn’t the last we see from the developer.
