IGN (8 out of 10) (80%)

Echo Night is a throwback to a lower-bit era when developers were more interested in how a game plays than how it looks. Rather than try and wow their audiences with graphical wizardry (which, in any case, wasn't technically possible), they attempted to deliver the kind of gaming experience that hooks the player, then lures them into the onscreen action. Despite its many deficiencies, this is exactly the effect Echo night achieves.

Game Vortex (76 out of 100) (76%)

Echo Night focuses on the thinking gamer. There is relatively no action whatsoever in this game, so if you wanna kill something, put this game down and keep your hands where I can see them. Therefore, if you like to spend a little time adding a few more convolutions to those wonderful gaming cerebellums, then I would definitely recommend this game to you. I will admit that Echo Night is a nice change of gaming style for PlayStation owners, but rent it first and see if you like it before you buy it.

Slow-building but effective, Echo Night is a cinematic horror title that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Just Adventure (B-) (67%)

Echo Night is not a memorable game, but it is well worth playing if you own a Playstation. It may be a little on the short side for the more experienced adventure gamer but still worth a rental. A purchase is highly recommend for the novice adventurer. Sales and reviews have generally been very good and hopefully will convince Agetec to treat us to more Japanese adventure games that we would otherwise never have the pleasure of experiencing. Now Agetec, let's get back to that conversation about converting Echo Night, Clocktower, and Clocktower 2 to the computer ...

Quebec Gamers (6.2 out of 10) (62%)

All Game Guide ( ) (60%)

There were many times during its incredibly short journey (I finished it just a shade over 5 hours) when it did get frustrating -- especially during the casino mini-game. But overall, Echo Night is a fun game that would make an excellent weekend rental. I cannot recommend the purchase of it because of its inadequate playing time, but if you're looking for a good, if flawed PlayStation adventure, this one should do the trick.

Gaming Age (C) (50%)

This is one of those PlayStation games that is absolutely perfect for a rainy day. Wait for a drab day, pick this up at the video store, and you'll thoroughly enjoy it.

GameSpot (4.2 out of 10) (42%)

At Echo Night's heart there are some great puzzles. Unfortunately, they're few and far between, and most of the game revolves around sticking the object you had found two rooms earlier into something in the room you're currently in. The plot becomes too muddled, and it's easy to mistake one bland spirit for another. The game is also extremely short - about six to eight hours for the average player, and the offer of multiple endings isn't really compelling enough for you to want to put up with the game's flaws all over again. The only thing this game does exceedingly well is give you an excellent example of how not to do a first-person puzzle-solving game.

Game Revolution (C-) (42%)

Echo Night has some clever ideas, but the execution is severely lacking. It has the ability to keep a chilling mood, but is held back by technical inferiority. Had it been longer, smoother, and deeper, I might have gotten more out of this game. As it stands, however, I didn't get enough.
