Tōhō: Fūmaroku

Reimu Hakurei, the young shrine maiden, has left the Hakurei shrine to train her newly discovered powers with the magical Yin-Yang orbs. When she returns, she finds the shrine desecrated, invaded by powerful demons. Riding her new friend, the turtle Genji, Reimu has to fight her way through hordes of enemies in order to defeat their demonic lords.

The second installment in the Tōhō series abandons the breakout/shooter hybrid concept of the first game in favor of more traditional vertically scrolling shooter gameplay. The turtle replaces the traditional space ship, but otherwise Tōhō: Fūmaroku plays very similarly to other so-called bullet hell shooters, with multiple enemies on the screen attacking at once, and ferocious bosses with their unique attack patterns. Reimu's turtle can upgrade its shooting abilities by eating various letters dropped from above. Reimu can also use a limited amount of bombs, which cause massive damage to all the enemies at once.
