What the game does successfully and, brace yourselves, better than its Mario Kart predecessor in terms of gameplay, are in terms of refinements to said gameplay as well as bringing some more depth to the genre. You won’t see this game fly off the shelves as fast as anything with the ’Mario Kart’ name on it, but if you are a fan of kart racing to any degree, you’ll find something immediately appealing in what’s offered here.

Aside from the items and some minor technical hitches (I've fallen through the track a handful of times), All-Stars Racing is a slick and exciting racer with appeal that transcends nostalgia and corporate iconography. I actually hurt myself playing this game. During one online race I was gesticulating wildly with the controller, desperate to place first. I got my desired position, but I also twisted my wrist in the process. The fact that this game could transform me from a stony-faced, veteran gamer into someone's over-enthusiastic, flailing uncle who doesn't understand how controllers work is itself proof of how Sumo Digital's synthesis of sight, sound and play has resulted in a uniquely intense and compulsively playable experience.

Estar al volante de Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing es una experiencia realmente satisfactoria, las carreras son muy divertidas y si en algún momento algo falla su genial ambientación se encarga de rescatar al jugador. Aún así, también es cierto que en algún aspecto le ha faltado algo más de ambición, sobre todo en los modos multijugador, y tampoco habría estado nada mal que se innovara en algo más allá de lo visto en Mario Kart. Aún con todo esto las carreras, el alma del título, son muy entretenidas y rayan a un gran nivel. Los seguidores de este tipo de juegos quedarán más que satisfechos y los fans de SEGA no cabrán en sí de emoción al ver este gran homenaje sobre ruedas.

Das lange Warten hat sich gelohnt! Mit Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing hat Sega endlich eine gute Alternative im Funracer-Genre parat. Zwar hat Klempner Mario aus dem Hause Nintendo immer noch die Pole Position inne, aber viele kleine Verbesserungen und eine fast schon dreiste Kopie des Grundgerüsts machen aus Sonic ein richtig unterhaltsames Rennspiel. Die Stärken liegen dabei klar im Mehrspieler-Modus, der euch und eure Freunde begeistern wird. Profis auf diesem Gebiet werden auf Dauer aber zu wenige Herausforderungen haben. Dennoch rast Sonic auf einen beachtsamen zweiten Platz. Mario Kart hat einen ernsthaften Konkurrenten bekommen!

There is no doubt that Sonic & SEGA All-Stars borrows from Mario Kart heavily, however in this case that is no bad thing because this game has depth, it works well and most important of all, it’s great fun. The visuals are great, staying true to their associated franchises, the audio is superb and the classic music works a treat. The framerate’s iffy, though, but we’re hoping a patch can come through to at least lock it down to 30fps, but apart from that this is pure SEGA brilliance.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing est l'une des très bonnes surprises de ce début d'année 2010. Esthétiquement sans faille, le jeu a été soigné par une équipe de Sega qui s'est largement inspirée de Mario Kart pour ce qui est du contenu. En revanche, le gameplay tout en dérapages lui est propre, ainsi que sa vingtaine de pilotes tous aussi charismatiques les uns que les autres. Fun, accessible à tous mais très technique si l'on est perfectionniste, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing s'impose d'emblée comme l'un des meilleurs jeux de courses multi du moment.

Although the core of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is obviously pulled straight out of Mario Kart, this wacky racer can stand on its own four wheels. The tight controls and excellent track design ensure that head-to-head competition is always exciting, but it's so fun just to play around with these karts that it’s easy to lose hours climbing the online leaderboards in Time Trial mode. All-Star Racing may not push the genre forward in any meaningful way, but it builds so well on established themes that it doesn't even matter.

Realmente, em termos de velocidade com automóveis mais ou menos sérios, a Sega vai bem lançada na parceria frutuosa que vem desenvolvendo com a Sumo Digital. Dos ralis, até à pauta arcade que se estabilizou em OutRun arcade, eles sabem o que fazem. E logo que avançam para as primeiras provas, começam a colher doses significativas de agrado pela forma como os pequenos veículos (entre motas, pequenos Karts, carros e outros – a motinha do Alex Kidd é mesmo mini) se desembaraçam com maior velocidade à custa dos botões de propulsão ou “power ups” recolhidos em certos pontos. Curvar com estilo é outra técnica que se desenvolve com facilidade, premindo o botão de drift, que logo solta a traseira do veículo e se o segurarem nessa posição por alguns segundos, ganham um pequeno incremento de velocidade logo que findam a negociação da curva.

The most impressive thing here is the restraint shown in the amount of Sega branded bedlam and power-ups. What results is a kart racer that offers something unique on 360 and PS3 and a strong alternative to Mario fatigued Wii players.

Mit etwas mehr Feintuning bei der Technik, mehr Auswahl an Fahrzeugen sowie einem besseren Balancing der Extras samt Windschatten wäre die Sega-Truppe den Erzrivalen von Nintendo sehr dicht auf die Pelle gerückt. If you’re looking for the next big thing in wacky racing games beyond a capable online framework, don’t look here. If you’re looking for straightforward Mario Kart clone with a glossy Sega veneer, then this game is for you.

So is Sonic Racing worth picking up? Well you need to ask yourself two questions. First, do you want to play a Mario Kart style kart racer on the PS3? Second, how big of a Sega fan are you? Because if you don’t like kart racers, Sonic Racing will do nothing to win you over. And if you don’t like Sega, you’re not going to see the charm in things like Samba De Amigo forming conga lines and Amy Rose hitting people with her Piko Piko hammer. But if you’re like myself and miss the days of Sega being a dominant force in the video game industry, you’ll appreciate Sonic Racing. It’s disappointing that Sonic Racing slows to a chug while playing split-screen, but at least they were smart enough to include it at all. Sonic Racing may not be the best kart racer ever, but it quite possibly might be the best kart racer on the PS3.

There’s a lot going for Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing, and fans of the Mario Kart ilk would be wise to check it out. It feels a little lightweight given that most of its content can be played within two or three hours, but the online modes are perpetually enjoyable and unlocking everything will require a moderate time investment. Sega Racing may never quite hit the heights enjoyed by the Mario Karts or Crash Team Racing, but it’s an enjoyable game which lays some solid foundations for future iterations. If Sega can plumb the depths of their extensive back-catalogue even more and Sumo can include a little more content and polish the online options, a sequel could very conceivably challenge the portly plumber’s throne at the pinnacle of karting games.

What Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing ends up being is a great game that Sega fans of any age can pickup and enjoy. It is currently the de facto kart racer game to own on the PS3, though a certain ‘Mod’ might just take over the kart racing ‘Nation’ come this May. Even though it lacks originality and the character roster could have been improved upon, the game is still a blast to play and deserves a spot in any Sega fan’s collection.

Det är ingen Mario Kart Wii-dödare Sumo Digital knåpat ihop. Att slå Nintendo i den subgenre de själva uppfann är näst intill omöjligt, men Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing gör ändå sitt jobb och är ett riktigt underhållande partyspel. Spel av den här typen växer inte på träd till varken Playstation 3 eller Xbox 360. Det är långt ifrån perfekt och hade absolut mått bra av lite extra finputsning, men jag kan ändå varmt rekommendera Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing som på delad skärm i glada polares lag är en verklig höjdare.

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is voor een poosje een vermakelijke game. Een lang avontuur in je eentje zit er niet echt in. Met twee uur heb je de game uitgespeeld, dit is na het behalen van een podium plek in het laatste toernooi. Natuurlijk heb je dan nog de missies en de multiplayer opties, maar dit wil niet zeggen dat de twee uur durende toernooien door de beugel kunnen. Hierdoor kan deze game zeker niet tippen aan Mario Kart 64, al moet hier wel bijgezegd worden dat er hedendaags een tal van top titels in de winkels liggen welke deze game een beetje laat verbleken.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing er en Mario Kart-kopi like blå som Sonic på en ensom dag. Jeg blir nesten trist i åndsverkets navn når jeg sier at dette er en god ting. Sega har skamlånt fra sin gamle konkurrent Nintendo, og skyflet ut et helt kurant gokart-spill på markedet. Dette er i beste fall Mario Kart-alternativet til de av oss som ikke eier en Wii (og i verste fall en grei avveksling for hardbarkede Sega-fans). Den feststemte grafikken og de finurlige banene gjør mye for dette spillet, som helst sikkert vil ha litt å gi til konsolleiere i alle aldre. Du vet hva du får, og intet mer.
