AI Wars: The Awakening

Moby ID: 4928

Description official description

AI Wars: The Awakening is set in the near future where every structure is linked to the NET which stores all information of the world. Artificial Intelligences, so-called "agents", do all necessary deeds in this cyberspace world. The player takes control over an agent who wants to achieve one of three possible goals: become immortal, achieve sentience or conquer the NET. Whatever goal he chooses, most time is spent by exploring the big levels, hacking into computers and collecting data.

Of course there are also forces who wants to stop him, namely viruses in the form of robots. To get rid of them the agent needs to be upgraded with offensive or defensive program updates, e.g. masquerading into a virus, an anti-virus update to repair damage or a weapon which paralyzes enemy robots while they try to calculate π. Other updates help in the hacking process. All these upgrades cost money which is earned by selling sensitive corporate data gained by hacking into their systems. For all goals it is most important to collect as many data as possible to develop new technologies which are used to achieve the goal. Exactly with this application the game differs depending on which goal the player pursues, e.g. to become immortal he needs to upload his memories into the NET.

Good, but not without problems

The Good
It's one of the few, maybe the first, game to simulate actually being inside a computer network. The mix of the three objectives does make gameplay interesting, since one can select one, two, or all three objectives to complete. The need to upgrade your software before hacking tougher military systems, the ability to sell excess wares and secret data, and that some systems that you take can be taken back add to the futuristic cyberpunk feel.

The Bad
Some of the nuances of the game can be difficult to lean, like using passwords with the crack software. Getting some of the higher-level software requires collection of lots of datablocks that have no value to them, and some software cannot be bought, only found. There are bugs in some of the software counters, like the number of masquerades. You may have none left, but you sell your current level of masquerades and suddenly have 65,535 left? With the age of the game (5+ years) there may be no more patches coming to repair the bugs.

The Bottom Line
A definite "must have" for any cyberpunk game fan. Just be ready to devote time to learn the ins-and-outs, and having to deal with those counter bugs.
