Overall, even though the series' format is clearly seeing far too many repetitions of itself, this game still is a bit of a jump over Mega Man 4 in terms of general quality. Music and graphics have seen somewhat of an upgrade, although that's pretty much where the line can be drawn. If you've been a fan of the first four games, Mega Man 5 will not disappoint you.

Mega Man 5 features some really cool weapons like one that generates a wave of water and another that reverses gravity so enemies fall off the screen. The game is tricky but the driving 8-bit tunes will keep you forging ahead. A well-rounded platform-shooter, Mega Man 5 is pretty much everything a fan could ask for.

The game is markedly easier and less frustrating than the first four titles in the series, making it ideal for those new to the technically great franchise.

All new bosses with all new weapons await, and I can't wait to stop reviewing it so I can play!

This game isn’t particularly long at sixteen levels, and there are password saves until you get to the point where you’re going after Protoman, but the game is still fun and is well worth replaying. I would, however, caution anybody considering buying this game that it is rare and thus would be slightly expensive. I would recommend buying Mega Man Anniversary Collection for GCN or PS2 and playing the entire series if this game sounds interesting to you.

Mega Man 5 is short on new ideas but doesn’t need them. What it lacks in innovation it more than makes up for with solid execution. It isn’t as polished as 2 or 3 but is only a step below in my opinion.

Mega Man V is the first entry in the Original Six that feels completely phoned-in. It’s impossible to think that Capcom forgot how to develop Mega Man games properly, given the series’ unprecedented amount of quickly generated sequels, but how else does one explain this mess of an entry? Mega Man V may look, sound, and play like Mega Man, but it doesn’t feel like Mega Man. The first three entries were created with passion, and without that, the character may as well be in a cryogenic chamber waiting until an adventure worthy of his name comes along to rouse him. Let’s hope his NES swansong will do the trick.

Either I got extremely good at playing Mega Man games after ten hours, or Mega Man 5 is distinctly shorter and easier than Mega Man 4. Um...yeah. Is that a good thing, or a bad thing? I leave the choice up to you, because quite honestly, I forget.

No game design evolution, but solid title

The Good
Mega Man 5 adds BEAT to the game. In each stage is a word from 'Mega Man V'. Once you have all eight, you can call on BEAT (a robotic bird) who will attack enemies for you. It is a nice addition.

Mega Man 5 stays true to the formula pioneered in the first three games. Graphically, the game is very cartoonish and well done for an 8 bit system. Mega Man 5 turns away from Mega Man 4's upbeat style and adopts Mega Man 3's darkish tones

Some levels are very well done. Gravity Man's stage has you walking on the ceiling (or on the ground) and you can 'flip' which way to go. Star Man's stage has the high jump capability of being underwater to simulate low gravity. Everything here in this game works as it did in the previous games.

The Bad
The formula is starting to get tired to play through. You beat 8 bosses, beat another few levels, and then go through Wily's Castle.

Some levels do not seem well done. Charge Man is little more than trains and hard hats. Drill Man's stage seems identical to Hard Man's stage. Gyro Man's stage seems identical to Air Man's stage.

The weapons seem similar from the previous three games. BEAT is a nice addition but adds minimal gameplay. to it. This is essentially the same game as Mega Man 3 and 4.

The Bottom Line
I think this game is better than Mega Man 4 and a worthy contender to the Mega Man series of NES games. The game does not alter the design formula which is good and bad (good in that it is fun like the previous games but bad because NOTHING will seem 'new').

Fun game, still the same old gameplay though.

The Good
I loved the story presentation, very well put together. I also liked the fact that there was a bit of mystery added to this installment. You didn't know what the final plot outcome would be, so Kudos to the producers for this installment very nice work.

The Bad
I didn't like the fact that there was nothing really new brought to the table here. It was more of the same ol' Mega Man gameplay, which really is not a bad thing. But after playing the same kinda gameplay for a long, long time, it gets repetitive and tired after awhile.

The Bottom Line
I would describe this game as a must have game, for mega man fans. I being a mega man game loved this game, however. if you're a person that likes a game that takes hours and hours to complete. Or if you're looking for innovation in a game, this game is not for you.. But if you love run and gun action, and memorable music tracks. Then by all means go out and find this game.
