Wow, was für eine fantastische Welt. 'AquaNox' sieht nicht nur verdammt lecker aus, es spielt sich auch so. Die Jungs von Massive Developement haben mit ihrem jüngsten Spross ein Action-Spiel der Superlative abgeliefert. Das 'Schleichfahrt'-Feeling ist schon nach den ersten Minuten wieder da und man möchte nicht mehr vom Monitor weg. Der motivierende Singleplayer-Modus, der nicht nur durch das überaus abwechslungsreiche Gameplay, sondern auch durch die vielen kleinen Details überzeugen kann, ist der absolute Überflieger. Das altbewährte 'Schleichfahrt'-Konzept greift also auch noch fünf Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung des Vorgängers. Alle Hobby-Söldner sollten noch einmal tief durchatmen, bevor sie in die fantastische Unterwasser-Welt Aqua eintauchen und in der Rolle des Emerald Flint den fiesen Bionten ordentlich Feuer unter dem Hintern machen.

Noch kein Spiel aus deutschen Landen hat bisher durch solch eine beeindruckende Grafik für Aufsehen gesorgt und daher war der Erwartungsdruck bzw. der zuvor geschürte Hype ziemlich groß - doch Massive konnte dem gerecht werden: Hinter der genialen Grafik verbergen sich abwechslungsreiche Missionen mit einer komplexen, teilweise aber auch durcheinander geratenen Story. Trotz all des Lobes sind es einige Kleinigkeiten und ein wenig mehr Feintuning, die AquaNox noch besser gemacht hätten, doch Massive kann diese mit einem Patch sicher beheben. Schade finde ich auch, dass die Simulationselemente runtergeschraubt wurden. AquaNox spielt sich fast wie ein 3D-Shooter und ein wenig mehr Realismus hätte dem Spiel nicht geschadet.

Verbrechen, Drogen und eine lebensfeindliche Umwelt: Spieler des 1996 erschienenen Vorgängers Schleichfahrt sind zumindest mit dem Szenario vertraut. Aquanox beginnt schließlich fast genau dort, wo Schleichfahrt endete. Und es ist - ohne an dieser Stelle zu viel zu verraten - sein Geld wert. Der deutsche Entwickler Massive Development aus Mannheim ist erneut seinem guten Ruf gerecht geworden und hat einen Unterwasser-Ego-Shooter der Güteklasse A aus dem Boden gestampft. Wer sich zunächst alleine den Story-Modus vornimmt, darf oder muss sich langsam vom Bodensatz der Söldnerkaste wieder nach oben boxen.

Warum denn nicht gleich so! So gut mir Aquanox vom Start weg gefallen hat - den einen Monat bis zu den jetzigen Verbesserungen hätte ich gerne noch gewartet. Allein schon der "Laden"-Knopf im Hauptmenü erscheint mir wie ein Geschenk des Himmels! Warum es in den Menüs aber immer noch keine Mausunterstützung gibt, ist mir unverständlich. Auch an unserem Haupt-Kritikpunkt, der drögen Story-Präsentation und dem damit einhergehenden Atmospähre-Malus, ändert sich durch die Patches nichts.

Es gibt Momente, da ist Aquanox besser als jeder Tauchurlaub. Wenn ich mit meinem Pott ein feindliches Schiff jage, überall um mich herum die Hölle tobt, Fregatten explodieren – klasse! Vor allem die gnadenlos schicke Optik hat es mir angetan. Etwa die wunderschönen Wasserwirbel hinter den Schiffen: Schon seit langem gab es kein einzelnes Grafik-Element mehr, das ich mir stundenlang derart begeistert angucken könnte. Auch die Missionen sind größtenteils erste Sahne: abwechslungsreich, angereichert mit vielen Überraschungen und immer wieder motivierend. Ausgerechnet die Story-Präsentation torpediert den Spielspaß leider kräftig. Mehr als ein Hörspiel ist es kaum, was Massive da abgeliefert hat. Die Comic-Bildchen passen nicht zur 3D-Grafik, die Texte sind konfus und öde. Auch über Detail-Schlampereien wie die umständlichen Menüs schüttle ich nur den Kopf. Mein Fazit: Zugreifen empfohlen – aber nur, wenn Sie langatmige präsentierte Storys nicht nerven.

Wenn die Axt im Hause den Zimmermann erspart, dann kann ich mir mit Aquanox auf der Festplatte wohl die Bungee-Sprünge schenken. Die Untersee-Dogfights sind ein Adrenalin-Triebmittel allerhöchster Güte. Ständig gibt’s neue Waffen, neue Gegner, neue Effekte. Da kann ich endlich meinen Klapperkahn gegen ein Jagdboot eintauschen, da habe ich endlich die schwache Stelle des Zerstörers gefunden, da macht meine Kinnlade beim Anblick der titanischen, fließend weich animierten Tentakelmonster mit der Tischplatte Bekanntschaft. Schade, dass das Drumherum mit der perfekten 3D-Welt nicht ganz mithalten kann. Bei der Storypräsentation, den Menüs, dem Missionsdesign und der Steuerung hätte Massive wirklich mehr herausholen können. Sei’s drum. Aquanox ist ein kurzes, aber intensives Ballervergnügen!

Torpedos kreisen um mich herum, Geschütztürme nehmen mich ins Visier: Selten habe ich so rasante Unterwasser-Gefechte erlebt wie bei Aquanox. Wer schnelle Action sucht, wird hier fündig. Für meinen Geschmack hätte es aber eine Prise realistischer sein dürfen: Das schöne Unterwasser-Flair von Schleichfahrt geht bei Aquanox vor lauter Ballerei verloren.

De ambitie van Massive Development is naar eigen zeggen 'het ontwikkelen van high-end technologie voor computergames'. Dat deze ambitie niet te hoog is gegrepen voor de Duitse ontwikkelaar, maakt Aquanox overduidelijk.

Besonders angenehm fallen dabei die super-witzigen Kommentare und Dialoge auf. Hier merkt man, dass Aquanox ein deutsches Produkt ist und deshalb kommt auch jeder Witz gut rüber. Die Grafik ist wirklich fantastisch und man bekommt sehr schnell ein richtiges Unter-Wasser-Gefühl. Die Steuerung ist per maus etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, ein richtig dicker Joystick ist wahrscheinlich besser zur Navigation geeignet. Mit über 30 Einzelmissionen wird einem bei Aquanox nicht so schnell langweilig und wer seiner Geforce3 mal richtig einheizen will sollte dieses Spiel sowieso kaufen!

Game Captain (82 out of 100)

Damit wären wir auch bei den Dialogen, die alle über ein Menü ablaufen. Man kann also nicht mehr einen bestimmten Ort auf der Station aufsuchen und dort Leute treffen, sondern es werden alle Leute in einem Fenster angezeigt. Die Dialoge selber haben sich aber ein bisschen verbessert. Endlich gibt es eine Sprachausgabe, die die teilweise sehr langen Dialoge vorliest. Manche Charaktere sind etwas überzogen und sprechen scheinbar in Tiefenrausch, was wiederum gar nicht so abwegig ist. Auch werden die Gesprächspartner durch comicartige Zeichnungen dargestellt, so daß man endlich eine Vorstellung von den Figuren erhält. Und zu guter Letzt (falls man das überhaupt so sagen kann) haben die Steuerung der Boote und die extreme Action einfach nichts mehr mit der realistischen Behäbigkeit aus Schleichfahrt zu tun.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault) ( )

Looking at AquaNox is an absolute delight. Still, although the quality of this title is more than skin deep, no other facet comes close to matching the outstanding visuals. Although the control problem is severe, it’s not so debilitating it ruins the gameplay. In a sense, your reaction to AquaNox depends on what you expect. If you want an undersea simulation or oceanic real-time strategy, then forget it; but if what you desire is arcade action in a novel and challenging context, then it fits the bill. So, fellow underwater action fans, join me in the deep blue sea for an extended plunge.

Aquanox is an first-person shooter set in a spectacular undersea world in the year 2666. Maybe you should to know that Aquanox is actually a sequel to 1997's Archimedean Dynasty, a subsim game that is similar in style to space sims like Privateer. That's why Aquanox features a similar design, as you'll return to the underwater world of Aqua featured in Archimedean Dynasty as a mercenary who gains credits by completing combat missions. However the games are pretty different, while Archimedean Dynasty was a complex, mission-based simulation with trading and privateering, Aquanox is fast paced fist-person shooter!

Letztendlich geht der Daumen bei AquaNox trotz Mankos nach oben: für den schnellen Spielspass zwischendurch genau der richtige Happen, in Sachen Story und Mehrspieler liegt das Werk aus Mannheim jedoch zu schwer im Magen, und ist damit nur überzeugten FPSlern wärmstens zu empfehlen. Genreneulingen sei vor dem Kauf wie bereits erwähnt ein Testspiel der Demo empfohlen.

The game was easy to install and has a nice interface. The graphics are great especially the water effects. You can even see plankton floating around! The characters are cartoon stills but the environment, reflections and explosions make up for lack of player detail. The cut-scenes were nice too, often telling what obstacles lie ahead. The techno music was a great touch, it added to the futuristic feel to the game. The voice acting is kind of rough around the edges. There are some nicely done voices and accents, but some of the voices and accents are just outright annoying. The game ran pretty stable for me, but there are some patches available. For controls, you can use keyboard, mouse and joystick. If you like space fighter games chances are you'll like this one. The underwater perspective is unique. Although some of the missions are repetitive, it's still fun. I got it for $5 and it's money well spent.

Eniten ärsyttää se, että ihan muutamalla pienellä parannuksella suklareiden lentomalliin ja vaihtamalla dialogin kynäilijät ammattilaisiin AquaNox olisi voinut helposti olla Wing Commandereiden, Freespacen ja Crimson Skiesin kaltainen klassikko, ja vielä visuaalisesti nätimpi kuin yksikään niistä. Tässä on onnistuttu tuhoamaan monta hyvää ideaa amatöörimäisellä toteutuksella ja uskomattoman huonolla maulla, ja se risoo aina.

Aquanox is a little disappointing for those who have been looking forward to the game since those initial screenshots appeared, all that time ago. The showpiece graphics fail to hide what is a distinctly average affair. Fans of the original Archimedean Dynasty might find favour with the game but for many it will offer very little.

Another problem with AquaNox are the numerous bugs which start 'bugging' you as soon as you install the game. The developers already published a patch, but if you take a closer look at the FAQ page on their site, you will find out that the game is full of settings, which can crash Windows if tempered with. Aquanox is a simple, easily controllable and modestly fun product. It should by no means be considered to be a submarine simulation, but rather a simple arcade shoot-em-up, used only for time wasting when you have nothing the least bit intelligent to play.

Wer solide Action-Kost mag, macht mit Aquanox einen guten Fang. Die rasanten, bunten Abenteuerfahrten durch eine teilweise bildgewaltige Unterwasserwelt haben ihren ganz speziellen Reiz. Die Geschichte wirkt zwar schwer verschroben und konstruiert, aber das allein führt noch nicht zum Untergang. Ein regelrechter Schlag ins Wasser ist jedoch die Bedienung: keine Pausen, kein Speichern, wann der Spieler es will, umständliche Menüs, langatmige Zwischenfilme – damit ist eine Seefahrt alles andere als lustig.

If you ask gamers whether they'd generally prefer a game with beautiful graphics but shallow gameplay or one with incredibly involving gameplay but less-attractive graphics, almost all of them will immediately declare that they'd rather play the one with better gameplay. But the allure of incredible graphics is often underestimated, and many of those declarations are untrue in practice. Just as many psychology tests have demonstrated that people are more likely to undeservedly ascribe positive attributes (honesty, intelligence) to good-looking people, gamers are more likely to overlook a good-looking game's thin gameplay and design flaws. But while outstanding graphics can make a good game seem great, occasionally a game features gameplay so weak that even amazing graphics can't camouflage its flaws. Enter AquaNox, a game with far more flash than substance.

There's plenty of action here, with some 34 missions total and a nice collection of ships to try out, and there are also some neat features, but with barely half the game completed I was already sick of the sight of it. Multiplayer cannot hope to save the game either. In spite of its GameSpy support and plenty of options for deathmatchers, it merely accentuates my gameplay-related frustration. Stripping the game's storyline from proceedings was a bad idea. Some sort of co-operative mode might not have gone amiss - at least you could gang up and not just spin around all over the shop trying to target your enemies - but alas, no. Aquanox shows a lot of potential, but thoroughly misses the target in a number of areas, and its lack of Windows XP support is unforgivable these days.

AquaNox is a perfect illustration of how fancy graphics mean nothing in their own right without artistic vision and strong gameplay to go along with them. The first time you see AquaNox in action, you'll probably be impressed with the bright lights and flashy explosions, but you'll probably tire of those in about five minutes. Beyond that, the game is moderately amusing for a little while but ultimately doesn't offer the breadth, depth, novelty, replay value, or polish to seem like much more than a glorified tech demo.

Viel Kritik, was aber nicht bedeuten soll, dass Aquanox ein schlechtes Spiel ist. Es hat jedoch in vielen Bereichen, die Schleichfahrt für mich zu einem genialen Spiel machten, eingespart und eher auf Mainstream-Action wert gelegt. So ist es eher mit einem Shooter unter Wasser, als mit einer Simulation zu vergleichen. Nicht unbedingt eine schlechte Wahl, jedoch enttäuschend für alle Schleichfahrt-Fans, die auf eine Gameplay-Weiterentwicklung gehofft hatten. Schleichfahrt hatte einfach mehr "Tiefe". Action statt Gehirnschmalz und taktischem Kalkül ist bei Aquanox für ca. 30 Missionen und 15-20 Stunden Spielzeit die Devise und wer sich darauf einlassen will, wird sicher nicht enttäuscht, denn technisch ist es hervorragend umgesetzt. Wer jedoch eine Weiterentwicklung von Schleichfahrt erwartet, ist hier sicher im falschen Spiel und sollte vorher die Demo ausprobieren. Ob Massive nun bei Aquanox 2: Revelation die Wünsche der Fans nach mehr "Schleichfahrt" erhört hat, bleibt abzuwarten.
