No Time To Explain is short, but genuinely fun and so full of personality it’ll be hard to forget the time spent with it.

That said, No Time is fun and very funny, and often its platform design is intelligent as well as fresh and challenging. At $10, I’d say that it’s worth the gamble that bugs won’t crop up. Even with its crap boss fights, the good things in No Time to Explain manage to outweigh the bad. As a major fan of time travel, I had a solidly fun time with it.

Some blame can be placed on general lack familiarity with the controls, as navigating by launching yourself isn’t exactly second nature, there are other parts where it’s hard to justify why certain gaps couldn’t be a few pixels wider. That said, given the hastened pace of the game, you’re never going to find yourself doing the same thing for too long. If clearing out a path by first setting yourself on fire, with mere seconds separating death and the pool of water on the other side, seems tricky, there’s not too much to fear as it’s only a few levels before you move on to the next thing. And then, after a couple hours, it’s all over. Sure it didn’t make sense but it ends on such a satisfactory note that it’s hard to look down on the eager greenlit kickstarter upper that only meant to be fun. And for the short while that it lasted it was.

No Time to Explain is insanity at its finest and funniest, with plenty of ludicrous scenes throughout the game. But the fun and fast paced gameplay is brought down by imprecise controls and hideous boss fights designed to test your patience. There’s a good game somewhere in here, it’s just a shame that I have to suffer to find it.

The entire game can be completed just shy of two hours, repeated deaths included, and though the entry fee isn't particularly high, combine this with the seemingly unfinished state of the game and you've got a hard sell for anyone that didn't initially back it on Kickstarter. It's a shame, because there's a great idea - even a great game - to be found here, it just needs work.

There have been some great platformers in recent years, from the harsh-but-fair brutality of Super Meat Boy to the gleefully sadistic I Want To Be The Guy. No Time To Explain isn't one of them. It's less trial than error – a game of cheap death and impotent rage. Never knowing what's coming next unquestionably adds spice, but not enough to compensate for the bland core game it has to be sprinkled over. There are too many better alternatives out there to find time for this one.

Littered throughout the whole game are collectible hats, which completionists will appreciate, but ultimately, the controls in No Time to Explain are too imprecise and drag down the experience too much.

Looking over the forums, it seems as if the developers are actively paying attention, and seemingly working on follow-up patches. That's good. But in its current state, No Time To Explain is in serious need of polish. One day, this might be a solid platformer, because the concept is fun and worth iterating upon. For now, though, the annoyances aren't worth putting up with.

Gameplay (Benelux) N/A

Rock, Paper, Shotgun N/A

So that's the deal. A mixture of really fun, nice and challenging mini-levels driven forward by the instant restarting, and the either dreary boredom or abject misery of boss fights. At a fiver, I think I'd still call this one well worthwhile, despite my aching hands and head.
