Games TM (8 out of 10) (80%)

Both PSN and XBLA are filled with unoriginal and condensed titles, and in many ways Rocketbirds is just another to add to the list. But this would be overlooking Ratloop's hard work and devotion to making a game that not only stands out the instant you start playing, but remains worth playing right until the humorous end.

Ratloop Asia's greatest achievement with Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken is the successful combination of diverse 2D gameplay, dark story tones, atmospheric visual settings, and imaginative audio work. This delightful handheld port will surprise Vita gamers who wrongly anticipate a generic platformer or shooter.

Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken is an action-packed ride of surprising depth, with an easy-to-master combat system and puzzles that will keep your mind stimulated. The story is complex and well-scripted, managing to take comic material and give it shocking seriousness. The soundtrack is incredible, even if the squawking might get on your nerves. The game moves along fairly quickly and isn’t very long, but it’s an enjoyable four-to-six hours, and the co-op multiplayer campaign (which is a completely separate story from the main plot) adds extra fun, plus you get to play with a friend! At a budget price of ten bucks, it’s worth giving a pickup, giving you decent value for your money.

Diehard GameFan N/A

Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken is one of those games that comes along and resparks an interest in a game genre you thought you’d passed over a long time ago. With an interesting take on war, the satire involved in the single player campaign and tongue-in-cheek B-movie dialogue, coupled with an amazing soundtrack, really drive the game forward from being just another ho-hum platformer into something unique. The added Vita features help separate it a bit from the PS3 version, while providing another reason to pick up the game if you’d already done so. On a system many regard as hurting for games, this is a welcome addition that I’d recommend to anyone who likes a good action platformer or who liked them in the past. While you can get your money’s worth out of the single player alone, I don’t think it’ll be for everyone.
