Game Chronicles (8.9 out of 10)

In all fairness though Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy is one of the best aerial combat games that I’ve ever played and the folks over at Namco Bandai delivered another fantastic addition to their critically acclaimed franchise. It has the right amount of action, easy to use and fluid controls and great visuals for a 3DS title. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy is totally worth the price of admission and a must have if you own a Nintendo 3DS.

Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy easily makes its way to the top of the 3DS food chain as one of the few third-party titles out for the system that really delivers. A few minor concerns aside, while the game doesn't knock it out of the park, it's still a strong title that you would do well to pick up at any price.

If you had low expectations for this one, let them be lifted -- this is a surprising hit of a game. Namco's still got room to improve here, and hopefully a future sequel will add a greater wealth of single-player missions and some multiplayer modes to this foundation. But Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy is truly impressive just as it is, and it deserves the attention of any Nintendo fans who've either always been curious about this series or just love flying through the sky to blow stuff up.

Worth Playing (8 out of 10)

Despite the association with the new version, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy was made specifically for fans of prior games in the series. The combat is rather fast, and skilled pilots will like the new maneuver feature. The overall campaign may be on the short side, but the missions are fast paced and always full of action. The game controls well, and it looks and sounds amazing. The 3-D is a nice touch but not exactly necessary. Portable flight fans who are looking for something more realistic or are already fans of the series will be pleased with what Assault Horizon Legacy has to offer.

However, Legacy is unquestionably a great Ace Combat title on 3DS. Beyond just the graphical limitations, this is a game that feels as if it could not have existed on the DS in a scaled-down form. The speed, the style, and action are all fantastically engrossing. In terms of sheer thrills it's hard to imagine there's much like it on the 3DS.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy brings a touch of the series' new gameplay elements along with a few of the old, establishing itself as the true Ace Combat début title for Nintendo consoles, making up for 2002's GBA misstep. Fuelling up with a boost of beautiful 3D graphics and a cache of unlockable content, Legacy brings the series' high intensity aerial combat action right into the palm of your hands in a way that’s only possible with the Nintendo 3DS. Strapping yourself into the cockpit of Legacy as a fighter pilot, there’s only one question that still remains: do you have what it takes to be called an “Ace”?

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy is a polished, enjoyable air shooter that will have you humming "Danger Zone" as you turn and burn through its missions. While it was hard for me to care about the goings-on in the world of ‘Strangereal,’ I was having too much fun to care. My initial playthrough of the Story Mode on Normal difficulty clocked in at just over four hours. The challenge modes and unlockables do add some depth to the game, but the sheer number of unlockables and the amount of effort needed in order to get all of them is a bit much. While I found the touchscreen controls to be worthless, the default configuration works just fine. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy for the 3DS will provide hours of exciting aerial action for veterans and rookie pilots alike.

To say Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy surprised us would be a huge understatement. This game, originally feared to be a dud, is one of the more impressive 3DS games you'll see. That said, we hope the publisher releases more Ace Combats in the years ahead.

Cheat Code Central (3.9 out of 5)

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy succeeds primarily because it sticks to the original Ace Combat format without trying to dress the series up as something it's not. It doesn't try to tell a huge story or take hints from other current franchises, but presents you with a simplistic and portable-friendly game that is fun to play and doesn't require a lot from the user. Though I would have liked to have seen a little more from the game in terms of content and customization ability, Legacy is still a successful title on the 3DS and is worth your time this holiday season if you are looking for a no-nonsense flight simulator on a portable handheld console. It might not have the bells and whistles of its console counterpart, but Assault Horizon Legacy still has enough nuts and bolts to make it a seriously fun game.

3D Juegos (7.2 out of 10)

If you fancy being a Top Gun and can stand the monotony of the Campaign, there is a solid, and dare I say it, entertaining game here. Its mission-based structure works well as a handheld title and while the graphics are a little uninspiring, the use of 3D is implemented better here than many other Nintendo 3DS titles. It’s just a shame that the lack of gameplay variety and multiplayer functionality holds back what could have been a really good title.

The most I can say about Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy is that it’s adequate at best. But at a time when the 3DS is finally getting all the killer software that it was missing for the first few months of its existence, adequate hardly cuts it.

Ultimately, this amalgamation of Ace Combat old and new fails to provide either the pomp of its latest console entry, or the tight handle on controls of its progenitor. By unceremoniously sitting on the fence, this is a gutless turn for a franchise that prides itself on being the exact opposite.
