I definitely suggest checking out Resident Evil Revelations, especially if you missed out on it the first time around. This is a solid port of the 3DS game, and while not as visually impressive on current hardware as it was on a portable format, it’s certainly not a bad looking port by any means. The dead-zone issues on the Wii U version are unfortunate, but I find myself willing to trade that for the GamePad functionality alone. The MiiVerse features aren’t exciting, but scrawling a Game Over message to taunt other players with isn’t a bad addition either. Raid Mode certainly bumps up the value, quite a bit actually, enough so that even if you’ve played through Revelations to death on the 3DS, I’ve a good feeling you won’t have much trouble doing so again.

It feels like classic Resident Evil except with all the modern bells and whistles like high definition graphics and the ability to save at any time. I have a soft spot for the 3DS edition, but once you begin playing Revelations on the Wii U, it's hard to stop!

With its welcome return to classic-style horror action, Resident Evil: Revelations is very much worth playing in its HD form for its atmosphere and scares alone. However, if you’ve got the choice between the remake and the original, stick with the one you can carry in your pocket – this one feels a bit uncomfortable in its own skin.

Resident Evil Revelations isn't as good on consoles as it is on the 3DS. It clearly wasn't designed for larger machines, and the somewhat clunky, rudimentary controls indicate that it would need to be rebuilt from the ground up to prove a superior alternative. However, it's still a fine game and still the best Resident Evil game available right now, and if you've not played it already, you truly ought to. If you've already tried it on 3DS, there's not a lot to bring you back, but any other Resident Evil fan would be best served giving it a go.

If you played Resident Evil: Revelations on the 3DS these new features probably aren’t enough to make you want to pick it up again, and they shouldn’t be. This is a game meant for new players, especially those disillusioned with the series’ recent direction. It takes elements of those modern action games but infuses them with an atmosphere and traditional sensibility that hasn’t graced a Resident Evil game in far too long. It doesn’t always execute with the same vigour as its contemporaries but it almost doesn’t need to. Revelations is the best Resident Evil game since 4, and that’s all most will ever need.

Unfortunately, though the best games in the series feature confrontations with memorable, horrifying bosses, the boss battles here, like everything else about Revelations, are standard. Bosses can dish out and withstand plenty of damage, but their designs and their attack patterns are all par for the course. Outside of the campaign, there's Raid mode, an opportunity to fight off enemies solo or with another player, and though the process of leveling up and earning points with which you can purchase more and better gear is predictably compelling, the combat still lacks the spark of scariness that infused the action of earlier Resident Evil entries. Revelations is a decent adventure, but it doesn't come close to reaching the heights the series has in the past.

Revelations isn’t terrible, although Capcom’s port to consoles was incredibly half-hearted and I’d suggest going for the 3DS version if you can. The original may not have been perfect, but the cracks show far more on a 40″ TV. It’s also brought along with it the same old problems. But behind those problems is a fairly solid title that tries to combine the old and the new. Revelations tries – and you won’t want to miss out if you love the franchise.
