If this is all that's changed, then why all the excitement? I'll tell you why: Sonic CD is a great game. I paid $300 for an attachment and $50 for the game back in the early '90s to see Sonic at his best. Now all you need is $5 and a few minutes for a file download. Sega could have easily charged twice as much for this much-loved classic.

And finally, of course, there’s that most iffy of subjects; pricing. Far be it for us to consider a game’s monetary value as determining its worth, but with this title its impossible to ignore, if only by contrast to the cheeky cost commanded by Sega’s other conversions. At the price of a fast-food meal Sonic CD is a bafflingly good value. Whether Sega has had a Dickensian change of heart in their pricing of re-releases or whether they have more cynical motives we cannot be certain, but either way we dare not complain. Whether you’re already a fan of Sonic CD will probably determine whether you intend to purchase this release or not, but Sega have succeeded in adding just enough tweaks and extras to convert the unconvinced. Conversions simply don’t get any better than this and we can only hope that Sonic CD might represent the new rule for Sega’s future handling of its old properties, rather than the long overdue exception.

Basically, I love this game. And I love it in a way that both fans and Sonic CD newcomers should be able to love it too. Fans will love the care and attention given to the conversion of one of the all-time great Sonic games. Newbies will share the same journey I just had, discovering a gem of a platformer that's been buried in obscurity for far too long. It's still relevant and only the ultra-hardcore level design is likely to put gamers off. If it does, go back to Sonic 2 instead - it's far simpler.

It's an absolute joy to see Sonic CD, easily Sonic's most neglected and maligned entry, sanctified with an earnest port that not only properly integrates Sonic CD onto modern hardware, but technically transforms the game to perform objectively better than its original form. Sonic CD's obtuse level design and time travel gimmick remain as divisive as ever, but for $5 it's easy to pull the trigger for fans and newcomers alike.

Complaints aside, I've really enjoyed the recent time I've spent with Sonic CD. The game begins to shine after you get accustomed to traveling through time and exploring each unique level. This downloadable rerelease is an easy choice for fans of the series or anyone interested in some pure platforming goodness.

Sonic CD is not the perfect Sonic game many people remember it being, but Sonic CD on the Retro Engine is the new gold standard to which all future 16-bit ports will surely be held. It strikes the perfect balance between old and new. Fans of the original will be pleased to find that their beloved Sonic CD remains intact with all the bells and whistles (and more), and newcomers will appreciate the game as an example of proper retro gaming implemented on modern consoles. I'd gladly buy Sonic 2, 3, and Sonic & Knuckles for the millionth time (with lock-on, of course) if they’re running on the Retro Engine. We’d finally be able to forget all about those Backbone ports. The future looks bright.
