Det Àr kort sagt precis just sÄ bra.

Basically, I love this game. And I love it in a way that both fans and Sonic CD newcomers should be able to love it too. Fans will love the care and attention given to the conversion of one of the all-time great Sonic games. Newbies will share the same journey I just had, discovering a gem of a platformer that's been buried in obscurity for far too long. It's still relevant and only the ultra-hardcore level design is likely to put gamers off. If it does, go back to Sonic 2 instead - it's far simpler.

If this is all that's changed, then why all the excitement? I'll tell you why: Sonic CD is a great game. I paid $300 for an attachment and $50 for the game back in the early '90s to see Sonic at his best. Now all you need is $5 and a few minutes for a file download. Sega could have easily charged twice as much for this much-loved classic.

Sonic CD is a labor of love, and for fans, it is a chance to finally play this often talked-about game. If you enjoy classic Sonic games, this is a must own. The amount of polish that went into it is impressive, especially for the low price tag. Sega may have soiled Sonicâs name in previous years, but after Generations and now this, I think he is back on the right track to glory.

Despite a few minor issues, Sonic CD is among the more impressive retro ports seen on modern platforms. Not only is the game faithful to the original, but it's also just plain better in many ways. And at a mere 400 Microsoft points ($5 US), it's a tremendous value to boot. If you remember Sonic CD fondly, there's no better way to enjoy one of the most treasured games in the series. And if you missed out on this one entirely before now, this is a superlative way to experience a beloved classic for the very first time.

For those of you eagerly awaiting Sonic 4: Episode II, listen up. SEGA is promoting Sonic CD as the direct prequel to Sonic 4. So not only is this a super fun Sonic game for XBLA, it potentially offers tips about SEGAâs upcoming projects. Thatâs two reasons to get it, I shouldnât have to give you a third.

Sonic CD's overall package is bare-bones, with the option for the original Japanese music and a time trial mode being the only notable additions to the game, but with the tiny price point (only 400 MS points) it's an easy thing to forgive. I would have really liked to see something new, like maybe a low-end overhaul of the graphics as an option, but having the different layers there are fine (though minor). Thankfully, though, all of the animations are hereâincluding that kickass "Sonic Boom" opening numberâand the game is even smoother than I remember on my SCD. Need a speedrun through the past? This doesn't just fit the billâit flies through it like a dine-and-dash.

Whoops, Iâve run on a bit too long for a digital port of an old game. Suffice it to say, this is one of the top-quality Sonic games, even if itâs a bit weirder and a bit patchier. The lack of slickness ends up being a positive â this is a game thatâll stick in your memory, and encourage you to keep coming back to it. Like Sonic? Youâll like this one.

Complaints aside, I've really enjoyed the recent time I've spent with Sonic CD. The game begins to shine after you get accustomed to traveling through time and exploring each unique level. This downloadable rerelease is an easy choice for fans of the series or anyone interested in some pure platforming goodness.

However, there is no doubt that this is the definitive version of a little-known, much-loved title. Sega's humility in collaborating with Whitehead, and artistry in bringing the game's strengths to the fore, is a striking achievement in 2011. For that reason, for the first time in a long time Sega, deserves its richest asset - and for the first time in a long time, those fans deserve Sega.
