This could be one of those cult classic games that could loved for a couple of years despite its flaws. RE delivers an action packed game with a ton of replay ability, the unlockables and multiple facets of the the multi player will make this a satisfying game to fans for a while.

If you are a Resident Evil fan, then prepare to be blown away by the flashbacks to some of the best moments, characters and locations the series has ever seen. The zombie killing action is just part of the excitement, as you begin unlocking all of the goodies the game has to offer and master the game's battle system. Check this game out if you get a chance; you'll find it's one of the best games of the year so far and well worth the time and money invested to play it.

In the end, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City isn’t the next real Resident Evil game (though its improved controls do bode well for that game). Instead, it’s a mostly solid third-person, cover-based shooter set in the same universe. Granted, it’s a little too Evil in spots for its own good, and not Evil enough in others, and certainly not as good as Left 4 Dead unless you don’t play well with others. But overall, it’s a fun spin-off.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City suffers from poor design and sometimes doesn't quite seem to "get" the point of the style it wishes to emulate, but that doesn't stop it from being a genuinely good time that should satisfy anybody looking for a hardcore romp. As a challenging rollercoaster ride through an iconic fictional catastrophe, Raccoon City provides hours of violent fun interspersed with some exasperated cries of aggravation. It should be noted that those looking strictly for survival horror, or even an experience on par with Resident Evil 4, will likely be disappointed with what this entry offers, as this is about as typical a shooter as the series has ever gotten. Those simply looking to kill, be killed, and kill again, however, are in for a pretty solid escapade.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is a fun game that is simply buried under too much to be really great. It's undeniably fun when you can get four communicative players together, but beyond that, it's plagued by far too many problems to be worth your time. If you want cooperative zombie-killing action, there are many far superior games, so it's hard to figure out why you'd pick up Operation Raccoon City aside from the name. Left 4 Dead 2 offers much of the same competitive feel but with more visceral impact, more interesting set pieces, and better gameplay. Resident Evil die-hards will find a lot to like here, but everyone else should wait for Resident Evil 6.

Between the disappointment of the squandered potential and the frustration of the poor design and technical deficiencies, I can’t recommend buying Operation Raccoon City. However, I would suggest cautiously checking back in a month or two when the game has hopefully undergone some much-needed patchwork, a price drop, and the full Spec Ops content is made available. There’s a decent amount of enjoyment to be had, but Slant Six and Capcom didn’t take the time to package it properly, nor did they ensure all the important pieces were included.

Umbrella may have filled Raccoon City with horrific creatures, but SlantSix has tainted the fabled town in its own way. It’s difficult recommending a return to Raccoon when you have to endure buggy AI, clunky gameplay, and terrible glitches like disappearing floors. Yes, on more than one occasion my friends and I had to ditch whole missions because we kept falling into an empty void. Not even online play is enough of a reason to warrant checking out this botched experiment with the Resident Evil brand.

A limp and generic single-player is aided by a multiplayer offering with a few good ideas, but on the whole Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City doesn’t feel like a game that will provide enough entertainment to justify you shelling out. In fact if you can't get enough buddies together to form a squad for both the campaign and versus arenas, then you're probably better off giving this game a wide berth like you would the T-virus. A real shame.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is going to be disappointing for many fans. It has taken one of the more popular timelines in the series and turned it into an inadequately designed shooter with none of the true qualities of a Resident Evil game. It just seems to lack the refinement and polish that the franchise is so known for and it destroys the Resident Evil mood as the poor A.I. in the single player, the lackluster locations, and the lack of atmosphere or any memorable characters dampens what could have been a great entry into the franchise. That being said, I did manage to have some fun with the multiplayer, particularly the adversarial, so there is indeed some good here. At the end of the day perhaps this title can satisfy a few die-hard fans of the series who can ignore its flaws, but Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is an average title that just can’t stand out against other, better third-person shooters available.

There are only six missions in all (until DLC) and they are reasonably repetitive. The enjoyment is really in the surprisingly engaging atmosphere and the neat hand-offs to other bits of RE history. The whole exercise has enabled them to offer a workable multiplayer option, but the modes are, when it comes down to it, just subtle variations of the same team versus dynamic and offer little to dislodge established kings of the genre like the Gears of War and Call of Duty series, amongst many others. And maybe that's the biggest problem RE:ORC will face, apart from its more fundamental flaws mentioned previously. There are so many others already that simply carrying the Resident Evil tag won't be enough to significantly break into the market beyond attracting die-hard fans of the storyline. Especially when there are already highly successful zombie-shooting entries out there as well. This is probably still in "Resident Evil fans only" territory.

The result is a game that isn't very good. The core gameplay mechanics are dull, the atmosphere is unsure of what it's supposed to be, and the characters you play as, typically a strong element of Resident Evil games, lack any distinct personality beyond the abilities they come equipped with and the one-liners they throw out in combat. The potential is there, but the game is lacking, and in the end, it fails to be a Resident Evil title worth playing through.

The promise of more guns and special abilities might seem like the right kind of lure for shooter fans looking to make Raccoon City their home, but this home is a broken one. The newest Resident Evil aims for Left 4 Dead, but has none of its wit or precision. Where other multiplayer shooters invite you to play again and again, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City's co-op campaign pushes you away. You could go back for collectibles, but why would you return to something that isn't fun? Like many of this game's design choices, it just wouldn't make sense.

Operation Raccoon City is the latest product of Capcom's experiment in working with western developers. Previous games like Bionic Commando, Dark Void and Dead Rising 2 are a mixed bag at best, but this is the poorest result yet, with a show-stopping franchise in the hands of a studio that's clearly not up to it. The brand on Operation Raccoon City guarantees it many sales - perhaps millions. And for every one of those buyers, the name Resident Evil will lose a little of its lustre.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is a mostly pointless third person shooter that's lacking many of the survival-horror aspects that make a good Resident Evil game.

Given the huge amount of potential the developers of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City had to work with, it's disappointing how little of it was actually realized. On several occasions I was legitimately surprised by the mention of the name William Birkin or the familiar sound of picking up an herb, having long forgotten that this was supposed to be a Resident Evil game. The terrible AI, the lackluster locations and the complete lack of atmosphere or memorable characters destroy what could have been a brilliant offshoot. In the end, Operation Raccoon City is little more than a poor man's SOCOM, and a destitute man's Resident Evil.

Operation Raccoon City is an example of wasted potential. There’s the potential to tell a really cool story from the perspective of Umbrella during one of the series’ most important events, but this game doesn’t do that. Instead Operation Raccoon City is a squad-based shooter with horrible AI, a bad cover system, poor aiming, and a bad story. The multiplayer modes are fun to mess around with for a little while, but can’t make up for the horrible campaign. Operation Raccoon City is a completely forgettable experience and Resident Evil fans won’t be missing out on anything by skipping this game.

I'm fine with multiplayer Resident Evil games. It's been done properly with co-op and even in the PS2 days with the Outbreak series, but if you're building a multiplayer component for a future release (like Resident Evil 6) don't let us see and play the rejects for ourselves. You'll only serve to hurt that brand you're relying on so heavily.

There's no rock. There's no hard place. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City isn't caught between anything — it's buried under countless poor decisions and technical problems. Even worse, one of the areas of Resident Evil's fiction ripest for exploration has been soured by a game that I can't recommend to anyone. An insult to Resident Evil fans, a failure at the most basic level for shooter fans, and a possible friendship-ender for those looking for a cooperative experience, Raccoon City is a disaster zone better left abandoned.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is barely worthy of it’s name. An awfully short campaign and bare bones online leaves you feeling cheated at the end. The game could have been great but with so many issues and a lack of modes coupled with the abysmally short story you will honestly question if you even want to buy RE6 in the future. Long gone are the days when Resident Evil spin-offs had the complexity or the storyline of Outbreak or the atmosphere and panic of the Survivor series. Instead we are presented with a lacklustre attempt to keep up with the times.

[Online review] Riddled with stupid issues that plague many online shooters - such as the wildly unbalanced classes and levelling perks that leave newcomers at a severe disadvantage - and a few of its own home-brewed cracks (like the fact that opponents can be locked into endless melee loops) Operation Raccoon City is a mess. It's fair to say that it's better online than off, but that's still far from a recommendation unless you're actively looking for a reason to hate Resident Evil.

Operation Raccoon City is a failed, and utterly pointless, experiment. We would never wish ill on individuals or a studio as a whole, but the question has to be realised as to why exactly Capcom turned to Slant Six to develop the game and why, when tasked with bringing a new spin to the franchise, the Canadian studio turned in a something so poor.
Mar 15th, 2012 · Xbox 360New Game Network (30 out of 100)
I would be hard pressed to name a recently released game that is worse than Raccoon City. It seems from the game’s multitude of issues that it clearly did not have enough time to cook in the oven. And even if Capcom allowed Slant Six more development time I’m not sure if they could’ve fixed it, as the story and game design choices are inherently flawed. The Resident Evil series is not one lacking in entries, and almost any of them would serve you better than this dud. Or if you just need to play a new Resident Evil game, I’d say wait for RE6 which is just around the corner.
