Crash Bandicoot is a game that isn't annoying to be around while someone else plays it (something I wish were true of more console games). It's okay for almost all ages and doesn't expose kids to anything they wouldn't see in a Road Runner cartoon. And you may even get non-console playing people to play it.

Overall, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex is a good game. The initial game is easy enough for younger players to complete while more experienced players can strive for the better ending if they wish, and it's nice to see that there's Game Boy Advance Cable support out there from a third party. Gamers who have played the previous Crash games probably shouldn't play this if they're expecting something completely new because it doesnât offer much, but gamers experiencing the wacky mascot for the first time may enjoy it.

Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex is not innovative, nor will it set new standards in terms of gameplay. But it does entertain, and looks good doing it.

With Super Mario Sunshine having been released, and other platformers available, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex fails to stand out. The straightforward nature of the levels begs for more openness, which isn't available. It was fun while it lasted, but even that wasn't that long. Getting through the game as quickly as possible takes a few hours. It's extremely short. It's a good platformer, worth renting or even buying for platform junkies, but doesn't have that special something.

In the end, if you like beating challenging platform games, there is plenty of challenge in Crash, as always. After completing a set of six levels, you can go back to five of them and complete additional goals to obtain a gem and a relic. A 100-percent completion rating for the game will net you a special ending. On the other hand, if you are more interested in a platform game for seeing cool scenes and playing interesting scenarios, there is far less of that to be found. Overall, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex hangs on too hard to the style and design of the previous installments in the series and is too disarrayed to be exciting in the evolving platform genre, and the low quality of this port doesn't help at all.

Had you asked us three years ago whether or not we thought we'd ever play a Crash Bandicoot title on a Nintendo console, we'd have laughed in your face. The idea that Sony's one-time premiere mascot could grace a competing console seemed impossible. But as the years have passed we've learned that in this industry only one thing is certain: change.

Crash fans who dig the simple platforming antics of the past Crash titles will be pleasantly surprised with Wrath of Cortex, but if you are looking for an innovative and original experience that does justice to the series youâll have to look elsewhere. There are a lot better games out there in the platforming department (like Super Mario Sunshine for instance) and truth be told, Wrath of Cortex is really starting to show its age. If you have a choice between the older, and most likely cheaper, Xbox version and the Gamecube version, get the Xbox port.

Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex is was cool on the PS2, better on the Xbox, and somehow managed to fail in the translation to the GameCube. Nintendo's tiny box is more than capable of cranking out a game like this - just look at the recently released StarFox. Despite the visual sacrifices in effects and framerate and some less than stellar audio, the game is addictive, and non-stop fun. If you want to take control over a orange furry Bandicoot then this is a great option, even if itâs just for a weekend rental.

Like the graphics, the soundscape for Wrath of the Cortex is predictable. Crash has always featured music of the Congo-beat variety, and it gets the job done for the most part. The composition of the music is decent, and their in-game renditions are catchy enough, though not gripping. The sound effects also succeed in paralleling the on-screen action. The voice acting is⊠weird and comes off awkward, particularly in the cutscenes. They grate, they annoy, but thankfully, they end soon enough. Overall, the music and sounds reinforce Crashâs mediocrity.

Crash makes his historic GameCube debut as he rubs shoulders with Sonic and Mario. Who would have guessed Crash, Sonic, and Mario would eventually appear on the same system? With the arrival of Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex on the GameCube, this seemingly impossible alignment of planets has come to fruition.

Don't think this review as a "Crash Bash", but more of a "C'mon developers step it up a bit" review. Developers have to realize that this isn't the 90's with no real competition as far as consoles go. With software as well as hardware fiercely competing for recognition, Crash falls far short of the mark and when compared to others in the genre looks pathetic. I'm not even saying this is a bad game, for it's not. But, with so many other platformers out there, this is at the bottom of my list. The game fares well as a rental, but not much more. Those looking to continue your Mario platform adventures will be highly disappointed.
