Allow a few of its necessary contrivances to go unquestioned (or even embrace them) and this is one of the most joyful videogame experiences money can buy. It is possible to focus on the negatives, particularly in the way the game’s launch was handled with regards to downloadable content and first-purchaser codes, but to do so would be to deny yourself one of the best games of this year.

The open world adds so much to the Batman experience. While I was worried that it might leave the franchise feeling rudderless and without focus. It achieves the opposite, enabling an all-encompassing Batman experience with wonderful side missions, near-perfect central missions, all wrapped up in a pretty package. Remember when people would say “How come nobody can make a great Batman game?” Well, Rocksteady have now made two, and Arkham City is the Batman game of your dreams. Outstanding, and deserving of a top ten placement on any Greatest Games list you might ever compile.

Arkham City not only lives up to the standards set by Arkham Asylum, it bests its predecessor in every way and stands tall as one of Batman’s greatest moments.

Rocksteady have managed the impossible: they have taken the definitive Batman experience of Arkham Asylum and improved on it in every possible way. By taking Batman off of Arkham Island and throwing him in to the dingy streets of Arkham City Rocksteady have made not only the finest Superhero game, but one of the best games of this generation.

Batman: Arkham City is one of the best games I've ever played. It isn't perfect, but it's only kept away from perfection by a weak plot and a few nagging gameplay flaws. The gameplay is amazing, the city is a delight to explore, and the sheer amount of game content is somewhat staggering. If Arkham City isn't the game of the year, it is only because 2011 has been an unusually strong year for video games. It is one of the most fun, clever and enjoyable games I've ever played, and it far surpasses its excellent predecessor. Arkham City is a must-buy for anyone who remotely enjoys excellent combat or Metroid-style exploration — or both.

(1) If Catwoman hadn't been involved, I would have rated Arkham City a 9.9 -- at worst. As it is, with so much content, it feels like it's bursting at the seams. Batman: Arkham City is a game that will be in the running for Game of the Year at many websites. It is most deserving of it. Rocksteady took Arkham Asylum and absolutely blew it away with this fantastic followup. (2) Superhero games often struggle to become remarkable or even average. The reason can be puzzling, but be rest assured, if you've never picked up a Batman game in today's world of gaming, you're missing out on a lot. Even if you're not particularly a comic-book fan, this game is a definite must.

Amen.

Batman: Arkham City is a tremendous sequel and an incredible game. Arguably offering an even more superior Batman experience than the recent Christopher Nolan films, fans of the Dark Knight and his extensive comic book universe couldn’t have asked for more. Sadly, Mark Hamill has confirmed that this will be his last ever performance as the Joker – a true shame, although it makes possible an ending that is memorable, hard-hitting and strangely poignant. Rocksteady Studios have not only created one of 2011’s best games, but the greatest superhero video game of all time. Essential.

Despite a few mishaps, Batman is as close to perfect a game I have played in years. Even when other big hitters like Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3 came out I have been unable to put the Dark Knight’s game down. If you are even remotely interested in the fiction, give this game a try and prepare to have your mind blown!

Rocksteady has managed to not only create one of the greatest pieces of Batman culture, but has also elevated Catwoman to the upper echelon’s of gaming’s most able-bodied females. Between the wealth of campaign content and Riddler’s Revenge modes, Batman: Arkham City will likely be spinning in my disc drive until The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters next year, and probably long after that given suitable DLC. It’s not a perfect game, but it’s also hard to imagine where Rocksteady can go from here.

The Greatest Superhero Game Ever Made!
by John H. (58)
The Good
Batman's one of pop-culture's defining superheroes, if not THE defining superhero ever; and this video game delivers on the character's legacy ten-fold. It's got fantastic gameplay, an equally well-written story supported by top-tier voice-acting and a very fine orchestral score to top it all off. And it's Batman's first real foray into one of gaming's greatest areas: open-world adventuring where you're the world's greatest superhero 24/7.
Need I really say any more? This game's the finest one that was released in 2011 and it's still fantastic on every level (literally and figuratively in terms of gameplay) and it's Batman's greatest outing since The Dark Knight movie. You fight all the classics in Batman's rogue-gallery: Two-Face, Clay-Face, Poison Ivy (via Catwoman), Mr. Freeze, The Penguin, Solomon Grundy, Ra's al Ghul, the Joker, The Riddler, Bane and Hugo Strange. They're all varied in their skills and phases in boss battles adding to the incredible diversity already present in the game's open-world of Arkham City.
This is gaming's equivalent of The Godfather Part II and The Empire Strikes Back: a sequel that builds on top of the original work and goes places we never knew we wanted in the first place, and making an unforgettable experience out of it.
The Bad
Batman's weakness to bullets (on any of the game's difficulties) is a bit tedious but it does help you learn from your mistakes when engaging in stealth battles against thugs.
The Bottom Line
Imagine a Batman game having the impact of God of War and the scale of Grand Theft Auto, mixed with The Legend of Zelda and Castlevania. It's a comic book dream come to life.
