Ganso Saiyūki: Super Monkey Daibōken
Description
This game is based on the Chinese novel Journey to the West. The goal of the game is to survive the long and arduous journey from China to India.
Players take control of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, as he helps guide Xuanzang, a Buddhist monk, on his quest to collect some Buddhist sutras. Xuanzang also rides a horse who is actually a dragon prince. Along the way, players will also join up with other guardians to add to their party.
In the game, players go on a journey across an overworld map. Players have to find certain locations or buildings in order to move along in their adventure. Some buildings will lead the player into a short side-scrolling action stage where the player has to defeat an onslaught of enemies. Also, players have to be on a lookout for spots where they can pick up food and drink so they don't starve or die of thirst on their lengthy journey.
Since the game lacks a proper save feature, the player will occasionally be given a code input to put in at the game's title screen, so the player can continue the game from where the code input was given.

Trivia
Game Center CX
Super Monkey Daibōken was featured on a special segment in the third season of popular Japanese TV show Game Center CX. Titled "Arino no! Moshi Moshi Daisakusen" (Arino's! Ring Ring Tactics), the show's host Shinya Arino would call viewers who had written in offering their assistance, asking for tips and suggestions on how to get through the game. The game was chosen for it's legendary reputation for being frustratingly obtuse and nigh incomprehensible. Arino managed to complete the game in the final episode of the season, relying entirely on the help of viewers.
The segment was popular enough that it returned in the eighth season with Championship Lode Runner as the featured game.
