Mizuguchi and his team spent over three years creating Rez. Three years trying to create something new and unique, something that would bring life to a stagnant industry. But sadly, in a world where most people are terrified of leaving the comfort of the mainstream, most gamers will not appreciate the time and effort UGA put into this game. Rez is a unique game, and it is a good game. But it is also much more than a game. It is a work of art.

There’s something about on-rails shooters, an entity that is both concurrently earthy and unbelievable, an inventive, mind-melding fusion of classic gameplay and incredible visuals. If there was any question, ever a shred of doubt, as to why the on-rails shooter should continue to exist, then the answer would surely be Rez. As a game, as an art form, and as an unmatched visual and aural experience, Rez fails on no counts.

Rez has given me a new appreciation for the Dreamcast console. I play this game on a 42-inch plasma with a VGA adapter, and it's a thing of beauty.

It’s a shame that the Dreamcast version seems slightly sluggish compared to the PlayStation2 incarnation, but really the differences between the two are cosmetic. Indeed, it’s tempting to think that were he alive today, and given a suitable intellectual climate, Kandinsky, to whom the game is dedicated, would have been proud to have worked on either version. Certainly, one of the defining achievements of Rez is that although it is a creation with a demonstrable cultural significance, it draws lovingly and resolutely from the videogame canon. Proof, then that videogames are art? Perhaps. A staggeringly enjoyable experience? Certainly.

With it's one of a kind gaming experience, Rez was a great game that many people never got the chance to play. Thanks to the gaming community, Rez found a second life on Xbox Live Arcade and is now available to download for those that missed out on it the first time.

The game fits into a niche, no question about it. If you're not a fan of European techno and trance music, you'll likely be confused, perhaps even baffled by the appeal of a game like this. However, if you enjoy shooters, or you enjoy melodic music, you are definitely going to want to check this game out. It's a minimalist game that can wow just about anybody.

Once you get it on a big TV or monitor and hook it all up to a meaty stereo system, it really is something special to behold. In an entertainment medium currently obsessed with realism, it's nice to experience a new take on game design ethics of the past that reminds us why we play videogames in the first place: for fun.

Player Reviews

You'll either love it or hate it.

The Good
The immersion. The graphics and sound combine in an incredible way to enable you to completely immerse yourself within the title - it is this factor which will determine whether you fall in love with the game or not. If you can let yourself be immersed by it you'll fall in love. If you can't, then you'll likely hate it, and not understand the attraction. The plot, though very basic, works well enough, and the way that each level (and your character) evolve is incredibly well thought out. There are no life-bars in this game - you simply change form as you are damaged or gain energy - from the base form of a sphere, through gradually more complex humanoid models, to a floating sound-form, to the final form of what appears to be a baby, the transition has to be seen to understand just how well it works.

The Bad
Nothing! But, if I hadn't been so immersed, I would likely have picked up upon the brevity of the game (though to get the "true" ending and all bonuses you're going to have to put in a huge amount of effort, so for me it wasn't an issue), and the fact that it's "only" an on-rails shooter.

The Bottom Line
An experience, and one that I can't guaruntee you'd enjoy. Approach the game with an open mind and hopefully you'll get the most out of it.
