If you take on Out of This World, get ready to play something completely different. The animation moves are so real, you'll genuinely fret about the fate of your other worldly, video friend. The action's hot, but don't expect video gymnastics with the same look and feel as Contra II, ActRaiser, or Super Mario World. the title says it all. This cart is Out of This World!

HonestGamers (Staff reviews only) (10 out of 10)

You’ll know this game is something special from the just after the title screen, when the screen scrolls the diary entry of Lester Knight Chaykin away from you, Star Wars-style, the music blaring, imploring you to respond to its fanfare. If you’re a persistent type like me, you’ll play and die, and play and die, and persevere, and see Lester through to the game’s touching sequel-demanding conclusion. Then you’ll how truly special Out of This World is from the moment cold waters grip you, to the moment the alien skies fade from your view. If you haven't experienced it, don't wait any longer.

 Merci, Mr Chahi.

Super Play (UK) (81 out of 100)

Music is used very effectively here, changing pace to suit what's happening on screen, and conveying the feeling of tension brilliantly. Sound used to complement story so well is something of a rarity. True, this version is slower in places, but not so much so that it becomes unworkable. Otherwise this is very similar game to the Amiga one, with few graphical changes. A nicely presented, involving cart, then, but (you guessed it) there's one big problem, and that's the lack of long-term playability. This game simply isn't going to last you a long time. To complete each section, a repetitive trial and error approach has to be adopted - there's no other way to do it - and to make this sort of mucking around acceptable, frequent passwords are given out. The problem this creates, of course, is that with only 14 sections to get through, and so much user- friendliness, you'll finish it in no time.

This game is one of the few that genuinely deserve the "adventure" title. Its attempts to create situations similar to a high-budget action movie are noble, and generally work out. If Out of This World has a major fault, it's that it is a very short game, perhaps taking 2 1/2 to 3 hours at most to beat. This assumes you know exactly what you're doing, and that you don't get caught by one of the insta-kill traps or a guard's laser blast. In fact, the ease of death is the only thing that will draw out the length of the game. None of the puzzles are particularly tricky to figure out, it's just that pulling them off without dying is tricky. But if you're looking for a classic adventure game in the vein of Prince of Persia, and have the patience to deal with such a game, you definitely should play this, if you haven't already.

Game Informer Magazine (8 out of 10)

Those working their way through Out of This World should be prepared to repeat sections of the game dozens of times. The loose controls are not help in action series, and can also make platforming sections difficult. Still, Out of This World remains one of the most emotionally charged games of the 16-bit era and an important part of gaming history.

Another World is certainly well worth a look, and was a very unique game for its time. The quirky artwork and emotive soundtrack are as immersive today as they ever were. Players looking for a fast-paced action game might get frustrated with the trial and error nature, but those who like puzzles and a stern challenge are in for a rewarding experience. It’s unlikely that we'll see a release on the Virtual Console, so your best bet is to track down the SNES cart.

Trotzdem ist in meinem Spieleregal schon ein Platz fĂŒr Another World reserviert.

Det hÀr Àr ett mycket bra spel. Ett fantastiskt intro, verklighetstrogen grafik, suverÀn musik och en spÀnning som du inte tidigare upplevt i ett videospel gör Another World till ett riktigt Toppspel. Det enda negativa Àr att spelkontrollen Àr lite vÀl seg, men i övrigt Àr allting nÀst intill perfekt genomfört.

Digitiser (4 out of 5)

Another World features a sumptuously atmospheric soundtrack which changes depending on your actions.
A lot of the time you'll progress via a trial and error method, but a password system means you won't end up playing the same scenes over and over. It all plays a wee bit faster on the MegaDrive.

Power Play (68 out of 100)

Am grafisch eindrucksvollen Action-Adventure Out of this World scheiden sich die Geister.

Total! (Germany) (3.25 out of 6)

Zudem gibt es Paßwörter, ohne die „Another World“ trotz guter Hintergrundmusik beinahe unspielbar wĂ€re.

Short, Difficult, but Playing Makes It Last Forever
by Kitty Says Meow (32)

The Good
It was complex, intuitive, and straight-forward. There was something of a plot, and that was revealed in the beginning of the game. I am always one for a good story, and while the game was merely a vehicle for showing off new and remarkable graphics (there was even a hint of speech in this game, and load-time!), it accomplished its sole task - it was, for all practical purposes, entertaining.

The Bad
It was virtually impossible and utterly realistic...which is also why I liked it.

One thing that was difficult to handle was the controls. Slight pressing of directional buttons made Lester (the protagonist) move way more than you thought was possible.

Dying comes naturally (no joke). In fact, it is almost expected that you die every time you encounter an enemy. Ammo for your weapon is non-existent, unless you count the "recharging" area for your gun.

More energy was spent avoiding death than figuring out puzzles. Even though that could make a good and challenging game, I found it frustrating after about 15 minutes (and those 15 minutes were spent trying to make it through the first part of the game, which should have taken less than 5 minutes at most).

The Bottom Line
I would tell other gamers that, when they prepare to play this game, get ready for a long night of sighs and exasperated expressions. In total, the game should have lasted about 20 minutes, but it has taken me months to complete (I simply just haven't come across the time to finish it all in one sitting). It's fun, but check around on the 'net for information about it, because it could take you months (even if you are a seasoned gamer) to figure out where the gun is in the jail area (you'll see).

Good luck with it! Challenge is something it doesn't lack, and it certainly makes for a good conversation piece. Is it replayable? Perhaps, if you beat it once and want to do it again perfectly, sure.
