Mr. Roboto!

Moby ID: 57287

Description

In the year 8048 mankind has been annihilated by the computers and machines they've built. Now, the machines started fighting each other, and two factions remain, red and blue.

Mr. Roboto! is a strategy game with real time action combat. The map screen consists of a 7x7 grid, with the two factions sided at the lower-left and upper-right corners. Each side has a CPU and 6 robot warrior servants, the object being moving one of the robots to the opponent's CPU and shutting it down. At each turn, players have the option of moving one robot or issuing a command for the CPU. The robots can only move one square per turn, and if they move to a square occupied by an enemy unity, the game changes to a battle screen. CPU commands include SKIP (to end the turn) and EXIT (to cancel and select other unit) and three attack virus that can be used against enemy robots: HALT (stops the robot for 3 turns), SLOW (halves the battle speed of a robot for 3 turns) or HALF (halves the power of a robot permanently). Each virus can be used only once.

When a robot enters the square occupied by an enemy robot, the game zooms in into the battle screen. Here, the two robots appear armed with Energy Discs, as well as two Power Surges, which circle the screen. The goal is to destroy the enemy robot, and to do so, players have to throw the Energy Discs by moving the joystick to the desired direction and press the action button. The Energy Disc keeps ricocheting until it hits a Power Surge. If it touches the enemy robot, it will drain one unit of its power. Touching the Power Surges also drains power. Once one of the robots is destroyed, the game goes back to the map screen.

When a robot enters the square occupied by the enemy CPU, the game zooms into a different battle screen. At this screen, the CPU is shown at the lower-left corner and the enemy robot is shown at the top of the screen. Six rows of firewalls are in the way of the enemy robot, which must avoid them to reach the CPU. The CPU can use a horizontal missile to try to stop the robot. If the robot reaches the CPU and touches it, the game is over.

Trivia

Contest

A puzzle contest was held by the developer to reward the first player to locate a hidden message. The prize included a 13" x 19" poster of the Mr. Roboto! cover, a $25 gift certificate to Packrat Video Games, and an autographed copy of the developer's next Odyssey 2 cartridge. The puzzle has since been solved. ### Title

The developer is apparently a fan of the band Styx, as the game shares its title with the hit single from their 1983 rock opera Kilroy Was Here.
