The ColecoVision Donkey Kong is simply the best home/arcade game available today. The high-resolution graphics are terrific, the game plays like the original, and the sound effects even include the happy tune that greets you with each turn. What's more, you get to be the hero and save the Girl. Ah, chivalry...

Un must !

This legendary game (the Colecovision pack-in cart) really got the system off to a running start. In 1982, people were very hungry for the "arcade quality" graphics that this version of Donkey Kong delivered. It's a terrific adaptation, although it does have a few quirks. The first screen has a slightly different girder layout, and making it up last ladder is very difficult. Holding a hammer makes you invincible, unlike the Atari 2600 version. The second screen (the rivets) plays well but there's no ending animation of DK falling down, which some people were probably hoping for. The third screen is the impressive elevator stage, which looks virtually the same as the arcade. The conveyer belt screen is missing, as it is in other home versions of the game. Overall the graphics here are terrific, but the control is somewhat stiff.

Some people find Donkey Kong, whether the Arcade or Coleco version, a bore. I'm not one of these people, but the action can get tired after extended play. The stages don't take very long to complete, and the intensity level is not on par with a game like Defender or even Ms. Pac-Man. All in all, though, Donkey Kong is a good-looking, whimsical game that will be remembered for a long time.

Donkey Kong for the Colecovision isn't the best port but it would be unfair to be too harsh when you consider the timeframe it was released. It plays decently and although it was surpassed by future ports (namely on the NES and Amstrad CPC) it's still head and shoulders above other home versions of the early 1980s.

A good game, but could be better...

The Good
ColecoVision's Donkey Kong had good graphics, nice gameplay and good sound effects. It was the first Donkey Kong coin-op conversion in the world. Because Coleco acquired DK rights from Nintendo, it released several versions of the game in Western hemisphere, like Intellivision and Atari 2600. ColecoVision's version had sound effects more realistic and similar to arcade than the japanese Famicom (NES) one.

The Bad
Unfortunately, like NES' version, the ColecoVision one had only three levels, lacking the Pie Factory. Did Nintendo make this on purpose?

The Bottom Line
ColecoVision Donkey Kong is a good game, but would be better if it included the Pie Factory, as Arcade and GB versions did. However, it's worth to play it on ColecoVision!
