Fall of the Samurai, like the original Shogun 2, is good enough that I heartily recommend it to everyone who owns a PC regardless of their experience with or opinion of the grand strategy genre. If you’re coming into the series for the first time there is a lot to learn, but you’ll be amply rewarded with hundreds of hours of top-notch entertainment should you make the investment.

Not only does it continue what the others did so well, but it also introduces new gameplay mechanics that change how you play dramatically. Gli sviluppatori sono riusciti a creare un ottimo connubio tra il capitolo precedente e la serie Empire, capace di ammaliare il giocatore e portarlo a rivivere il XIX secolo orientale. Le novità introdotte sono tantissime e ci chiediamo se non possano gettare le basi per futuri titoli ambientati sempre in quest’epoca: noi ci auguriamo di vedere la guerra di secessione americana. A parte qualche difetto tecnico riscontrato, senza riserve consigliamo fortemente il titolo a tutti gli appassionati di strategici. Sia agli amanti di Shogun 2 che a tutti gli appassionati che si sono persi il capitolo precedente.

Total War: Shogun 2 – Fall of the Samurai is een zeer indrukwekkende uitbreiding geworden. Met maar liefst 39 nieuwe troepen op land en in het water, zullen de slagvelden gevarieerder en grootser zijn dan ooit. Bovendien kun je ook nog eens aan de slag met nieuwe agenten, technologieën en strategische mogelijkheden. Het grootste minpunt blijft dan ook de multiplayer, die de kracht van de singleplayer nog steeds niet goed kan volgen en ook te kampen heeft met connectieproblemen. Fall of the Samurai is ronduit geweldig en ligt ook nog eens in de rekken voor een verlaagde prijs. Deze standalone uitbreiding is nu al een van de beste strategiegames van het jaar!

Yes, Fall of the Samurai is an expansion, but like any good expansion – even standalone expansion – it doesn't just add things to the original, it changes them. You'll get an experience much more like a Civil War-era wargame with Fall of the Samurai, as opposed to a medieval wargame with the original Shogun 2, and that, in itself, is worth the cost of admission, let alone all the new units, locations, abilities, factions, and bells/whistles.

Es un contenido significativo por cantidad y calidad, que además supone una campaña interesante y diferente a lo visto en Shogun II, por lo que tiene cosas que ofrecer incluso a los que ya han exprimido el original. Tiene algunos puntos débiles, como los combates marítimos que resultan bastante tediosos y poco interesantes. También se echa de menos algo más diferenciación entre los dos bandos, que independientemente de sus lealtades y su posición sobre la tecnología u occidente, acaban más o menos usando las mismas unidades avanzadas -a menos que el jugador haga un esfuerzo constante por no desarrollarse, quedándose en clara desventaja-. Los que quieran imitar la última batalla de “El último Samurai” no tendrán problemas al hacerlo, aunque posiblemente el resultado no cambie demasiado con respecto a lo que pasó en la película.

Nachdem ich mich bei Medieval 2: Kingdoms und dem Empire-Ableger Napoleon zweimal in Folge über die zerstückelten Kleinkampagnen eines Total-War-Addons ärgern musste, bietet Fall of the Samurai endlich, endlich wieder einen groß angelegten Feldzug – und nicht nur das, er ist sogar länger als der des Hauptprogramms. Also: Hut ab, Wertung rauf. Dazulernen dürfen nun gerne auch die Computergegner, über deren Aussetzer beschwere ich mich nämlich ebenfalls schon seit Jahren. Sei's drum, das erste Lernziel ist erreicht – und ich bin dank Fall of the Samurai erstmal wieder ein paar Monate lang beschäftigt.

Das Add-on hat mich voll überzeugt: Sowohl See- als auch Landkämpfe spielen sich noch anspruchsvoller und taktischer als im Hauptprogramm. Auch im Rundenmodus hat sich vieles zum Guten gewendet. Als Nächstes dann bitte Rome 2, liebe Entwickler. Und zwar zur Abwechslung mit fähigen KI-Generälen.

Creative Assembly meistert im Laufe einer umfangreichen Kampagne trotz der Gegensätze einen sanften militärhistorischen Übergang, denn die Schusswaffen müssen sich auf dem Schlachtfeld des 19. Jahrhunderts erst entwickeln und beweisen. Ich war zwar etwas skeptisch, denn das Erweiterungsgespenst flattert meist mit wenig Substanz um ein großes Spiel herum. Aber die Briten präsentieren ebenso anspruchsvolle wie abwechslungsreiche Unterhaltung, die in vielen kleinen, aber leider nicht allen relevanten Bereichen verfeinert wurde. Auf dem Weg nach Rom müssen sie weiter an der Diplomatie, der Kollisionsphysik und der KI feilen.

So, a decent addition to Shogun 2's content library, although we still think a slightly missed opportunity to do something truly special. Still, those of you who purchase this expansion are unlikely to be disappointed, as there's still a lot of fun to be had here. With an RRP of £29.99 you might want to try and pick it up in a sale, as that's basically the price of a full game and stuff still is missing: Family relationships, for example, are non-existent because the new time-frame means you're unlikely to see children grow up, which means secession isn't really an issue either. In fact a lot of the RPG elements outside of specialising character skill trees are gone now. But expansions like this are all about give and take, what you lose there you gain elsewhere, and there's a lot to gain from delving into this particular page in Japanese history.

Overall, Fall of the Samurai is an exceptional stand-alone expansion that adds some welcome improvements while retaining everything that made the original game great. In fact, the only major drawback to Fall of the Samurai over Shogun 2 is that the load times are quite long. Fans of the series who want to play with ironclads, railroads, and Gatling guns shouldn't hesitate to pick it up. If, however, you haven't enjoyed the modern thrust of the series from Empire onward, then you should pass on this one.

At the end of the day, Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai is a fun game if you like this genre of PC gaming that contains a very sturdy interface with some lush graphics and political intrigue thrown into the mix. It does feel a little dated at times but then the game will do something unique like allow you to customise your agents or the improved gaming mechanics of naval battles. Navigating the game is not the easiest thing, especially for new comers but fortunately the game holds your hand until you find your feet. All in all, it's a fun experience that will definitely make you come back for more!

In the end the overall appeal, like with any expansion, lies with fans of the original, and does very little to try and win new players into the fold. But with Shogun 2 scoring top marks across the board from both critics and fans alike, this is not necessarily a bad thing, so ‘Fall of the Samurai’ comes highly recommended. With arguably more gameplay content than the original, expanded diplomatic and battle strategies, and moving the series forward to the industrial age, developer Creative Assembly have released another stellar entry into this long-running series.

The same problems that plagued Shogun 2 are present here, with insufferable load times, wonky pathfinding and an ever so slightly idiotic AI on the campaign map. This is a roundabout way of saying that if you were happy to put up with those issues in Shogun 2, there's no reason why they should annoy you here. Shogun 2 was a massive, beautiful game, and Fall of the Samurai is that same massive, beautiful game, except now it's got guns and trains, and a much stronger theme that plays into the mechanics. So it's not hard to ignore those niggles, especially when you've got an excitable eight year old in your head jumping around and making gun noises as he pretends to swing a sword about. There's a magic in that weird juxtaposition of old and new. You want to know who'd win, because while there's an awesome power in the barrel of a gun, there's a romanticised grandeur to the blade of a sword. And you know who won, because our policemen don't walk around with katanas strapped to their backs.

Rent spelmekaniskt tar inte denna expansion Total War-serien till nya höjder, men man lyckas ändå berika det redan strålande strategispelet Total War: Shogun 2 med en ny kontext, samt andra detaljer som höjer spelupplevelsen. Mixen mellan skjutvapen och mer traditionella krigsredskap gör att slagfältet fortfarande känns fräscht, men framför allt kul. Strid till havs är dock fortfarande oengagerande och laddningstiderna mellan slagfälten och kampanjkartan är fortfarande olidligt långa, vilket drar ned helhetsintrycket något.

The shortcomings are overcome by the game’s achievements. While expansion packs usually mean adding a few units/maps/features here and there, this is an expansion that plays much like a standalone game, and kudos to Creative Assembly for exploring new areas with their game. For plays new to Total War, I would recommend starting with Shogun 2. But for hardened Total War fans, this is indeed an important part of the series. It introduces a plethora of new units, tactics and gameplay elements, and does represent a significant evolution in the Total War series.

Además, el particular escenario elegido para la historia de La Caída de los Samurái lo convierten en una gran elección incluso si no tenemos Shogun 2 previamente (es una expansión stand-alone, es decir, no hace falta tener el juego original). Quizás como los mismos japoneses de esa época, en Creative Assembly (y probablemente nosotros también) queramos matar el dragón que pretende imponer su dominación y acabar con lo que caracteriza a la saga hasta ahora.

Det er et spill som bidrar til å gjøre Total War-serien stadig mer intuitiv og samtidig enda raskere. Flerspilleren bringer i likhet med Total War: Shogun 2 en svært samarbeidsvennlig nettdel. Dersom Boshin-krigene og nyere japansk historie vekker interesse, er dette et flott spill som gir mer enn nok underholdning for pengene.

Die vielen Erweiterungen in Sachen Technik und Inhalt machen diesen Stand-Alone-Titel zurecht zu einen Solo-Produkt. Lediglich das Fehlen einer Tutorial-Kampagne sowie einige KI-Schwächen sind anzumerken. Wer sich Shogun 2 noch nicht zugelegt hat, der kann bei dem Preis ruhig zuschlagen – Total War-Fans selbstverständlich ebenso.

Även om mycket är sig likt finns det som sagt en del saker som ger Fall of the Samurai sin egen ton. Trots att jag inte är överförtjust i Empire: Total War och mer modern krigföring tycker jag att Creative Assembly har lyckats behålla tillräckligt mycket av det som gör Japan så exotiskt. Dock har de tappat lite av det episka från Shogun 2 - att bygga upp en dynasti, vilket jag tycker är en stor del av tjusningen. Men jag kan inte förneka att expansionen i grunden förvaltar sitt arv väl och gillar du välgjorda strategispel ska du inte missa detta.

Fall of the Samurai er en god utvidelsespakke til et av fjorårets beste strategispill. Det fanger essensen med industrialiseringen av Japan og avviklingen av shogunatet, og gir en verdifull historietime på kjøpet. Spillets største problem tilhører det systematiske plan i form av at Total War-serien nå går litt på tomgang. Jeg er en stor fan av både Shogun og Shogun 2 på grunn av dets tematikk og flotte innpakning, men Creative Assembly er nødt til å brette opp ermene og eksperimentere mer med serien. Jeg har fremdeles litt å gå på før jeg blir lei, men jeg blir småbekymret for at hele Total War-franchisen skal råtne på rot.
