This is very obviously a teaser for Doom 4. This collection is a little something for fans to whet their appetites with in preparation for id's long-awaited reveal of the long-in-development fourth installment. With that said, this is one of the best HD re-releases I've played so far. You won't confuse this with any recently released games, but outside of some obvious trademarks of the previous generation of games (such as an overall lack of detail on the characters and world), this is a stunning game.

Doom 3 BFG Edition isn’t the complete, ultimate Doom collection I was hoping for but it’s still a lot of great content in one place and for a good price. Even if I prefer the original games modded to fan perfection, BFG Edition is a great entry point for novices, or a good way for lapsed fans to rediscover the blood, carnage and white knuckle terror of Doom.

The only draw back to Doom 3 BFG is that if you happen to be a die hard fan, you are not really getting anything new here. The improved graphics and better flashlight aren’t a big enough change to warrant a buy. But with the 3d enhancements, the multiplayer options through Steam, and to have the entire collection under one roof makes it a justifiable buy. It could also be a perfect gift for dads who don’t want a lot of games on their precious, outdated computer that probably couldn’t have run Doom in the first place. I’m not bitter.

In the end, Doom 3 BFG Edition is definitely worth it. It’s a game that continues to stand as one of the best survival horror games, and hell, it’s scarier than most of the mainstream horror games we’ve gotten in this console generation. Some parts may be a bit dull, but that doesn’t stop the entire experience from being truly memorable and highly replayable. Thanks to this release I was finally able to experience each main game in the series all in one place.

Doom 3 is a very good game, probably better than you remember. For PS3 owners who've never gotten any of this content, it's a particularly great deal. BFG Edition is a tough sell for the PC crowd, but console jockeys who missed it when it was the next big thing should dive on in. While several nagging issues can make it feel more like a rushed port rather than the definitive director's cut it should be, there's no denying that Doom 3 has improved with age.

Doom 3: BFG Edition isn’t that impressive. The old game has received minimal updates, at least on the PC, so you’re much better off buying the old game, putting whatever mods you want, and experiencing it once more.

Still doesn’t mean I enjoy playing it that much, though. Doom 3: BFG Edition is probably worth one playthrough if you like the strange mix of first-person shooter and survival horror action that this game offers, and just to see the curious story that id Software weaved through the entire thing. But once you’ve gone through it one time, you’ve pretty much tore into all this game has to offer. You’ll get more replay value out of the attached copies of the original Ultimate Doom and Doom II, to tell the truth. Unless, of course, you really enjoy going back to old games with B-movie plot delivery and that early 2000s motion capture goodness in the cutscenes to spice up the moments between constant eye strain and weapon reloading.

Oh well. The BFG edition at least fixes certain issues people had with the original release. There’s a shoulder-mounted torch now, so there’s no flipping between flashlight and weapon in this one. It also runs at a pretty solid 60 frames per second, so everything’s wonderfully smooth and playable. The expansion pack, Resurrection of Evil, is present, too, as well as some new missions (which feature bits of the main campaign flipped around, so nothing amazing). Doom and Doom 2: Hell On Earth are here, too, if you’re one of the many that never played them. There’s god-knows-how-many hours of gameplay here, and it’s all still better, more varied and enjoyable than the grossly offensive, jingoistic military shooter you’re currently skulking through.

I had planned to end this review with a recommendation that, if you don't need 3D or Rift support, you just stick with the regular Doom 3, which is highly moddable and which any modern PC will run perfectly fine. But the original game is no longer available for sale on Steam outside of the hundred-dollar id collection, meaning the BFG Edition is the best you're going to do right now if you want to buy a new copy of a shooter that, for better or worse, ranks among the most hyped video game releases of all time.

If you’re a Doom-a-holic, you’ll already own the previous games and expansions but will likely be keen on this in order to blast through and gain achievements/trophies. While the gameplay and design does seem surprisingly archaic for a recent-ish game, there is enjoyment to be had in the mindless domination of brain-dead demonic hordes. We have been spoilt in subsequent years, which isn’t Doom 3’s fault. The unfortunate truth remains that it is more of a chore to revisit than a joy.

It may be dubbed the ultimate collection but even on consoles the BFG Edition is far from ideal. As a PC game its existence is highly questionable; any esoteric changes made on id’s part have already been done better by a dedicated modding community. Doom 3 may not be a groundbreaking title but there’s a certain reverence for many aspects of its experience, no matter how dated it has become. It was divisive, memorable and holds a particular place in history; the BFG Edition loses all of this. There’s no discerning reason for it.

Game Rant N/A

id Software changed the gaming industry for the better with each iteration of its beloved Doom and Quake series, and Doom 3 is no different. The BFG Edition certainly does an admirable job of assembling the Doom series into one package, but ultimately the lack of new content keeps it from pushing boundaries in the way the original games did. Fortunately, the $30 price tag on PC is not steep by any means (the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions are $40), and for the complete Doom anthology, it's a great deal.

Reviews should be a guide as to whether or not a game is worth your money. That’s the basis of any good product critique so actually, personal feelings shouldn’t sway a retro review too far. If it’s broken, then by all means a review should state that, but Doom 3: BFG Edition isn’t broken, it just like a relic, a slice of history – because that’s exactly what it is.

BFG - Big. Furious. Glorious.
by Gatekeeper (305)

The Good
Doom 3: BFG Edition is an updated (remastered) version of the original Doom 3 and its mission pack (Resurrection of Evil) with a few interesting extras.

The first and most obvious improvement in this edition is the game engine - it now has considerably better support for high/widescreen resolutions. The in-game HUD and PDA interface have also been revamped to accommodate widescreen, without pixelation of text or visual elements (which inevitably occurs when running the original version of the game under high resolutions). The game world has been made a bit brighter overall (lots of people complained about the darkness in this game), more light/shadow effects have been added, and there are even some HDR effects thrown in here and there. Textures have a new compression method, which makes them look better and more detailed. Last but not least, the game’s main menu has also been completely revamped - made simpler and faster to navigate.

In terms of game content, you get a pretty nice package - Doom 3 (obviously), the expansion pack (RoE) and a new bonus episode called “The Lost Mission”, which is based on previously unreleased maps by id Software. And if that’s not enough, you also get the classic Doom and Doom II, plus a nice little addition - an extra “episode” for Doom II called “No Rest for the Living.”

Regarding the new level content - the Lost Mission is quite decent, design quality is consistent with what you’ve seen in Doom 3. Its two Hell levels are particularly good and offer lots of cool scenery and some previously unseen special effects. No Rest for the Living is a little precious jewel for every classic Doom fan out there - excellent level design, fairly challenging, and excessively fun to play. These 9 new levels offer detailed and polished architecture, while at the same time preserving the classic spirit of the maps from the original games. They fit perfectly into the classic Doom universe.

One of the biggest complaints about Doom 3 was about the flashlight being separate from the weapons (though, to be honest, this never bothered me, so I don’t see it as a flaw). Good news, everyone - the flashlight is now mounted to your armor and can be used at any time, while also carrying a weapon. A small detail - its power is no longer unlimited and it drains after a while, forcing you to recharge it for a few seconds.

Last but not least - support for stereoscopic 3D, though I've never tried this out and can't say if it's good or not.

The Bad
I noticed some changes to Resurrection of Evil’s levels that I don’t quite agree with - e.g. the removal of the enviro-suit sequence in the toxic sewer, or the dimensional flux effect in Delta Labs, and there is even an entire missing room in the final level. I can’t think of any good reason for these cuts. I can also add that I’ve noticed a few minor visual glitches here and there.

Another strange change is Sergeant Kelly’s face - his old appearance was much better, I think. His new face is pretty bland. Furthermore, they have not updated the in-game video communications with Sarge, and thus you actually see his old appearance when you receive a message from him. An oversight that makes the “facelift” seem even more meaningless.

The Doom and Doom II included with the BFG Edition have been altered as well (e.g. removing red crosses from medkits, removing Nazi references from the Wolfenstein-themed secret levels) - many of these changes were done for the sake of avoiding ethical or legal issues, yet they still feel a bit like censorship to me.

The Lost Mission is good overall, but only the last two levels are memorable. The others are pretty much the same thing we’ve seen and experienced in the original game (and expansion). In fact, some levels use “recycled” bits of architecture, which annoyed some people (there are some YT videos about this).

Oh, and cutscenes are now unskippable… it would be wise to save after the longer ones, so that you wouldn’t have to watch them again if you die.

The Bottom Line
This is an excellent upgrade to Doom 3, despite a few small flaws here and there (maybe annoying but nothing fatal). If you liked the game back in 2004, you will surely appreciate this opportunity to immerse yourself into this world once more, and play some new levels too!

Recommended for all hardcore Doom fans, as well as FPS enthusiasts who haven’t played Doom before.
