So for those Resident Evil fans who long for the return of survival horror and cry foul over all the quicktime events and zombies with guns and cover mechanics, go ahead and replay the first three games. I, for one, am enjoying the direction this series is headed thanks to RE6’s streamlined interface, more fluid controls (move AND shoot?!?! Wow!) blockbuster movie set-piece moments, and lengthy campaign. If you’re listening Capcom, you’ve really got to up your game even further with RE7. I want eight different campaigns
with all of them starring Barry Burton. But if you’re in the mood for some awesome co-op action, or just want to blast zombies for points, go grab this game now. You won’t be disappointed.

The people who continuously whine about the fact that Resident Evil isn’t as good as it used to be are beginning to sound like the people who say the same thing about the 8-bit NES days, the SNES vs. Genesis days or the glory days of the Japanese RPG on the Playstation. There are a hell of a lot of great things still to come in the twilight years of this generation of systems, and Resident Evil 6 has been one of them.

Evolution and ambition are only natural for a franchise as old as Resident Evil, as is the need to respect a long-lasting legacy and the fans that have come to appreciate it. But in trying to serve all masters, Resident Evil 6 loses focus and fails to accurately assess which of its elements are truly worthy of being included. When this game is at its height, it sets new standards for the series in every way. Unfortunately, there are no shortage of lows either, taking what could have been an excellent experience and making it something considerably lesser.

PlayStation Trophies (77 out of 100)

Resident Evil 6 is a truly immense RE title that succeeds as a third-person action shooter, but falls flat on its face as a survival horror game. Yes, times have changed, but if Dead Space can still provide a good balance of scares and set-pieces, then why can't Resi? Here's hoping that Capcom sees the next-generation of consoles as a golden opportunity to take Resident Evil back to its roots. Until then, Resident Evil 6 is certainly not a bad game by any means, and it'll get its slimy hooks into you if you let it.

Resident Evil 6 steers Capcom’s survival-horror series in an even more action-oriented direction – and comes up short in some places as a result. However, if you can forgive the troublesome camera and woeful partner AI, there’s still a lot to like about this third-person shooter.

So much of Resident Evil 6 is wonderful. The story is intense and ambitious, and the separate campaigns--and the way they interact with each other--is an achievement in interactive storytelling. Even the changes to the gameplay are strong, and you’ll likely spend a majority of the game enjoying the weird, unexpected ride that it takes you on. When you do run into issues, though, they’ll be related to the half measures taken in other areas of the gameplay, proving that flat-out abandoning some tropes while clinging on to others doesn’t always make for great sequels. Though rough around the edges, Resident Evil 6 is still a remarkable creature, and like the J’avo, it’s an interesting transformation, even if it’s not necessarily the prettiest one.

The game represents a tremendous amount of effort and investment and, for those impressed by such things, Resident Evil 6 may delight. But all the effort in the world won't make up for a lack of vision. This game is blind to imagination and focus. Capcom's uncertainty about the series' identity post-Mikami (and post-Uncharted) is hardcoded into its structure: four campaigns offering different, flawed expressions of that potential. And the inevitable price for this wavering is a lack of coherence. Resident Evil 6 is an unwieldy tribute to the series' past, an uneven expression of its present and an unwelcome indication of its future.

As a total package, taking everything into account and averaging it out, Resident Evil 6 is a good game. I can’t help but believe that the addition of the other character’s detract from the “real” Leon campaign, bringing that said average down rather than adding value. Each campaign feels too separate, too different, and do little to complete a story that’s ridiculous and convoluted. When I was done with my first campaign, I though “I’ll have to play the next one to fill in the blanks”. While that’s partly true, it still doesn’t come together cohesively, and ends being a disjointed mess. There’s almost too much content, diluting the shining moments that make Resident Evil 6 special. I can only hope Capcom learns from this and creates a more focused experience rooted in survival horror—exactly what made the franchise successful in the first place.

RE6 delivers great graphics, but visuals can only drive an experience so far, and it doesn't take much to see the gameplay compromises made in the name of accessibility. To their credit, the developers have iterated on a survival horror concept and turned it into an inclusive and competently-made cooperative action game, but the end result feels far removed from the series' roots. RE6 presents blockbuster-caliber entertainment, sure, but it also forces you to revisit rough portions of gameplay and rarely challenges a player outside of arbitrary difficulty levels and cheap deaths via phoned-in quick-time events. The unfortunate truth is that Capcom hasn't figured out a new way to terrify gamers in the eight years since RE4. While building on that game's masterful formula of stop-and-pop gunplay is a smart approach, RE6 serves as proof that too many compromises and too much empowerment can ultimately erode what makes Resident Evil, at its core, work.

Capcom continues to thumb its nose at long time series fans. Not only have they abandoned any pretense of tension and fear, they've dredged up tired old storylines and shifted the game solidly into Gears of War territory. Let the series die!

As such the franchise has begun to resemble one of its bloated, mutated, flesh-seamed monsters. It’s expanded beyond any plausible scientific explanation, with what is left being a cumbersome, grotesque mish-mash of disparate elements, barely strung together and about as subtle as a hammer to the thumb. And just as when you shoot one of the game’s infected J’avo in face, shooting at the core of the clockwork machinations behind Resident Evil 6’s design reveals the true nature of Capcom’s beastly franchise – it’s still the impressive spectacle it always was, but it’s become a bit of an incoherent mess.

Resident Evil 6's messy mix of annoying quick-time events and constant set pieces makes it a poor caricature of modern-day action games.

How could such a storied franchise with great resources result in such a disastrous game? Its entirely possible that with such a large team developing a big budget title there was a lack of leadership and project direction. Resident Evil 6 will be remembered as a perfect reminder that a game can be lousy even if it has virtually unlimited financing and manpower behind it. Someone–a director, producer, engineer, artist or play tester–should have spoken up and tried to rectify the situation to prevent this calamity. Maybe some did raise concerns, but as it was the case with the Titanic, it is difficult to maneuver such a colossal project to safety and success even if there is advanced warning. It is difficult to see such a storied franchise’s fall from grace, but hopefully the negative reactions will help them chart a better course for the series. No matter what type of gamer you are, you will find almost no enjoyment in Resident Evil 6.
