Assassin's Creed III is a fantastic game that's marred only by a glacial few opening hours, a surfeit of history and exposition, and the odd glitch. That aside, ACIII is a triumph and the perfect way to say hello to Connor. It doesn't quite measure up to Assassin's Creed II, but ACIII is nonetheless an American Revolution of sorts.

Assassin's Creed was once a fascinating mystery wrapped around a fun action-adventure - remember when you first loaded up the original game and it began in the Abstergo offices and you had no idea what was going on? - but that fun action-adventure game has long since eclipsed the fiction that envelops it. That's more true than ever in Assassin's Creed 3, where you're a hunter, a ship captain, a silent killer, an entrepreneur, a swashbuckling sword-fighter and many other things besides. It all serves to make this the biggest and richest Assassin's Creed game to date - maybe not the best, but a place where, for want of a better expression, everything is permitted.

Assassin’s Creed III’s methodical world-building and wealth of clever gameplay systems are impressive, even if they don’t always confidently click together with all the other moving parts.

Assassin’s Creed III is far from the perfect game. There a number of visual and gameplay bugs despite a day one patch, but the overall gameplay, story, improved visuals and the sheer size of the world we get to explore certainly help outweigh any negatives. The game’s setting is arguably the best yet, but Connor lacks the personality that helped make Ezio so appealing and doesn't leave me wanting more from him in the same way that AC II did. With easily 35+ hours of gameplay to be had, a huge new world to explore and a truly unique multiplayer experience that has been improved with the addition of the new Wolf Pack co-operative mode, Assassin’s Creed III is the most complete addition to the franchise to date.

Assassin’s Creed III capitalizes on its historical setting in ways few other games do, hitting several perfect notes and even throwing the best curveball in recent memory. As a crescendo piece, it misses the mark completely. Occasionally iffy controls and a few mystifying design choices also knock down an otherwise solid effort. I’d put it smack in the middle of the franchise … superior to the first game and last year’s Revelations, but nowhere close to Assassin’s Creed II or Brotherhood’s greatness. We’ll have to leave it to Assassin’s Creed IV to perfect the formula.

But perhaps the most important thing is that I will be back for the next chapter, that despite all of the things Assassin's Creed has continually gotten wrong, it has not lost me. If anything, the fact that Ubisoft can now apparently pull off intimate character study makes me all the more intrigued with where they may decide to take the series from here. I can already defend Assassin's Creed III as everything you'd expect: wonky but ambitious, tiresome but utterly bonkers, formulaic yet unlike anything else on the market today. The coolest thing about it, though, is that while it aggravated me in ways I'd anticipated, it captivated me in ways I hadn't. Ubisoft should be embarrassed that they haven't sorted out some of the series' biggest issues yet, but as long as they continue finding reasons for me to keep coming back, I will.

It's indicative of Ubisoft's approach in designing this game, so wary of the player discovering their own enjoyment, or missing key information, that it so fervently handholds through what should be its most spectacular moments. At times this reduces entire chapters to tediously long treks between cut-scenes, a lot f which feel like less than worthwhile narrative additions. It's an odd occurrence of a game giving and taking away in equal measure. Moving forward, Ubisoft needs to decide what's more important, telling a story or making a game, because Assassin's Creed III's attempts at either are not unreserved successes.

Even with all of these refinements, some serious questions need to be answered after ACIII. What good do 30 possible points of interest on a map accomplish when a majority of them highlight the same gameplay flaws? Where can Ubisoft Montreal take this story after so many silly plot twists? Can combat ever really capture the essence of being an assassin without severely automated contrivances? Maybe Assassin's Creed III and a half will finally address these problems, or maybe it won't. In either case, it's time for Ubisoft Montreal to reassess their intentions for this series and try to rediscover its roots. AC can only sail on its past success for so long before it sinks into a sea of formulaic design.

Worth Playing (6.5 out of 10)

As a whole, Assassin's Creed III feels lacking. Considering how positive most early impressions were coming out of E3, perhaps my expectations were set too high, but there are clearly a number of disjointed elements that feel half-finished or poorly thought out. This is the issue of having so many cooks in the Assassin's Creed III's development kitchen, and the final product ends up being far more disappointing than I would've expected. It's not without some merit, and it's not something to skip if you're invested in the universe or overarching story, but if you found your interest waning with Revelations, AC3 could be the final nail in the coffin for some players. It's worth a rental, but I wouldn't classify this as a must-play game.

At least the petty indignities of the multiplayer are optional and situated around gameplay that's solid and unique, if frustratingly stagnant. In the single-player campaign, however, it's impossible to escape the ham-fisted manipulations of the Assassin's Creed III development team. Although Connor Kenway fights for freedom in a war that was presumably about liberty, Ubisoft makes the player a slave to their particular vision. I can see the irony in that, but I can't see the point, even if it's for my own good.
