With ZombiU, we have finally gotten the survival-horror game many fans have been asking for, and not just another third-person shooter. ZombiU is definitely not another Red Steel, and what I hope is the first of many third party successes on the Wii U. It is well worth looking past the gimmicky name, because this is a game that will deliver a great experience that capitalizes on the strengths of the new hardware.

Overall I was extremely impressed by what ZombiU brought to the table for Wii U owners. It’s a fantastically tense horror experience, and one of the best zombie themed games I’ve had the pleasure of playing. It also does a great job of making the GamePad feel like a necessary device instead of just a simple gimmick, offering up a number of options that add to the overall immersive feeling the game is trying to deliver. This definitely should be at the top of everyone’s Wii U wishlist this season, and certainly deserves a look.

I'd always wondered why ZombiU was one of the Wii U's pack-in games, and finally it makes sense. ZombiU isn't the obligatory FPS launch title, but an original twist on the genre that has no console equivalent. It's not quite a revolution, lacking the scope and variety of mechanics to compete with high watermarks like Half-Life 2. But that should take nothing away from Ubisoft's achievement, and the success or otherwise of ZombiU could be defining for Wii U.

Nintendo must be incredibly happy to see a third-party treating their new console with such reverence, because ZombiU isn’t your typical launch title, or even your typical First Person game. It’s unique, treats the gamer with the utmost respect in return for demanding all of their attention. Ultra-hardcore in everything it does, most casual shooter fans would barely recognise the genre on show here, such is Ubisoft Montreal’s achievement.

Its genre and difficulty curve might narrow the appeal down to horror aficionados and survivalists, but in all other ways, ZombiU stands out as one of the Wii U’s must-own launch titles. The seamless integration of the GamePad hardware with the atmospheric gameplay is nothing short of a triumph, and Ubisoft deserves full credit for not only seeing the possibilities but capitalizing on them. The constant dying combined with the lengthy retracing of steps damages the flow, the multiplayer’s largely a wash, and I do wish Ubisoft had stuck to its guns in creating a fully believable zombie apocalypse. But it still made something pretty damn apocalyptic in all the right ways. Consider me highly impressed.

Ubisoft have definitely hit a home run with their Wii U exclusive, ZombiU that provides more scares than Resident Evil and some great use of the GamePad for this console. Add in decent gameplay and make sure your doors are locked because the realism of these zombies is quite unparalleled. It's a well designed game from start to finish.

ZombiU is definitely not a game for everyone, mostly due to its unforgiving design and flat fiction. But few horror games really make you feel like you’re in a desperate struggle for survival, and few action games command all of your attention and precision to play. ZombiU manages both those things simultaneously, and the result feels fresh and interesting in all the right ways. Ubisoft Montpellier has crafted a great little game in time for launch, and if they’re given the opportunity to refine the design and technical foundation in a sequel, I feel like the result could be something truly mind-blowing.

ZombiU isn't perfect, but it sets out to do a very specific thing and succeeds with style. It’s atmospheric and horrifying and will provide plenty of sweaty palms and jump scares, proving that dark, mature games can thrive on Nintendo’s newest console. Anyone looking for a challenging and highly immersive experience with some real heft behind it is definitely going to come away pleased, despite some relatively minor niggles relating to that ground-breaking GamePad. There might not be a whole lot of choice on store shelves yet, but even if there was, ZombiU still absolutely deserves a spot in your Wii U library.

If you plan on getting a WiiU, then ZombiU is most definitely the game I recommend taking along with you. The story is not fantastic and the campaign as a whole leaves a lot to be desired, but finding the zombie of your previous character, as well as those of others is pretty cool and it can serve as a time-sink until your next paycheck comes in. The multiplayer is where the game shines, though, so if you have someone to play the game with, then that is certainly a major selling point. Additionally, if you plan on getting a Commodore 64 anytime soon , then the original Zombi is not half-bad.

You can imagine that Ubisoft has already set the wheels in motion for a sequel that truly capitalises on the ideas presented here and refines them into the game that this promises to be. ZombiU doesn't quite match its own lofty ambitions then, but that's not without trying. It's without a doubt a thrilling and full-bodied launch title, limited only but its resources and lack of conviction. If this is an indicator of how third-party developers will approach the new system, then the Wii U could be one of the most interesting consoles in Nintendo's long history.

ZombiU comes close to brilliance, but unfortunately falls short on too may little things. This is a fantastic game and that much needs to be made clear. However, it had the potential to be a killer app for Nintendo if more time were spent in development. This is still the game that the Survival Horror genre desperately needed and while it might not achieve what you could expect from a launch title, it certainly provides inspiration for the future.

But if you buy a WiiU, you'll simply need to get a copy of ZombiU. It's a true survival-horror game, channelling the heart-in-mouth claustrophobia of early Resident Evils and Alone In The Dark, and adding Dark Souls' refusal to compromise as the icing on top. Play it in a darkened room, and you'll remember what gaming is all about.

ZombiU is awkward, ugly, crawling in its pace, and often nonsensical with its narrative ... and I remember when horror games weren't ashamed of any of that, even actively exploiting it to create alienating, frightening atmospheres that stuck in a players' memories and made them too spooked to want to take another step forward. ZombiU did that to me. It made me afraid to walk into rooms, it made me think twice before tackling two opponents at once, and it frequently reminded me I was weak, piteous, but maybe just careful and lucky enough to get through.

It's a hell of an achievement for a launch title from a third-party team getting to grips with strange new hardware – who'd have thought that not Nintendo but Ubisoft would have created the defining Wii U experience? Zombi is a game that might seem too ponderous and frustrating for many. But for those who appreciate a challenging atmosphere that tasks you with marshalling your fears and taking a studious approach to survival, it’s a definite must-try. Yeah, the graphics and parts of the gameplay are outdated, and irritation and tedium can rear their ugly heads. But beneath it all beats the heart of a true-blue survival/horror game that thrives on its excellent environment and overall impact. This is exactly the kind of game you’ll want to play at 2 a.m. with all the lights off, even if you’re a veteran of the genre. It’s becoming harder and harder to scare the desensitized masses with copious amounts of blood and gore, and generating real fear in the human mind is an art form. Remember that.

ZombiU is reminiscent of the tough-as-nails survival games that appeared many years ago. It makes the player extremely vulnerable and quite a few of its mechanics are harder than they should. Some players nowadays welcome such a challenge while others might get extremely mad with the mechanics. Ultimately, it depends on what type of player you are. As a game to show off the Wii U's strengths, it scores in a few aspects, like using the Wii U GamePad in great ways, while missing other ones, like the sub-par graphics that don't complement the console's capabilities.

Overall ZombiU is a triumph. It’s raw and flawed, and it’s nowhere near as original or innovative as it probably should have been, but it is nonetheless different. Especially for the Nintendo gamers who have never had the opportunity to play a Souls game, ZombiU does a remarkable job of adapting that style of game and repackaging it in a new setting. Throw in one of the best multiplayer modes on the Wii U to date and it’s an easy game to recommend. And, looking at the sales figures, it’s surely a big enough hit to justify a sequel, which would give Ubisoft an opportunity to balance out some of the less spectacular elements in the game.

Zombi is a decent port, and although I had some struggles early on coming to terms with the keyboard and mouse controls (especially in the inventory and during combat), I did enjoy running through (and below) the streets of London. Although the visuals look somewhat dated, they do an adequate job of showing London in a dreary, post zombie apocalypse setting. Even though Zombi is primarily a shooter, the fact that you can take your time and bypass zombies rather than go head to head with them, adds some depth to the gameplay. Zombi is definitely worth a look if you missed the WiiU exclusive and enjoy killing the undead.

ZombiU has so many great ideas from looting with the Wii U GamePad to permadeath to its spooky setting, but none of them grow into a great game. Controls are clunky, melee combat is annoying, and the game doesn’t look good. There’s fun to be had here as it’s challenging to see how long you can go before succumbing to a biter, but there are so many better zombie games out there that ZombiU really doesn’t demand anyone’s attention.

ZombiU is a mixed bag that just doesn’t deliver, at least for me. Despite how interesting the gamepad is used to play the game, the ten-plus hour campaign itself just isn’t fun. The multiplayer is a better experience, but that’s not saying much. ZombiU is for those gamers that truly want difficult survival horror with no end purpose, and that’s fine for those that don’t need complexity to their zombie apocalypse. But with little narrative and tedious combat, I would pass on ZombiU.

It’s the kind of thing that leaves a terrible aftertaste, making it difficult to look back upon the whole experience and wonder if it was any good at all. And you know what, there were amazing times to be had. ZombiU is an atmospheric game that can be very tense and even sometimes scary. You just have to be willing to over look its flaws.

Considering the significantly improved graphical update work, Zombi is a good game for the price. Loosing the online integration hurts, and because of this the Wii U version is the superior one by a significant margin, despite looking inferior. But who knows, if this is enough of a success on these new generation consoles, Ubisoft might be encouraged to produce a sequel and re-introduce those features. For now you're not going to find many other games that allow you to take cricket bats to zombies, so that's something.

It's not surprising to see a slightly undercooked game like ZombiU launch alongside a console. This is Ubisoft's first stab at a new series on a new piece of hardware, so there are bound to be some wrinkles to smooth out. But while the game is full of intriguing mechanics, the entire package feels more like a test than a finished piece. I really hope to see Ubisoft work on a followup that fixes some of the rough patches and delivers the survival experience which the mechanics seem to be promising. Until then, we're left with a launch title full of unique ideas, but lacking the necessary cohesion to be truly great.

ZombiU manages to make its zombies just as threatening as the kinds found in cinema and literature, finally letting them use their lethal bites in the game world while accommodating it with a unique revival system. The consequence of death being so high can make even a single zombie terrifying if it catches you at a bad moment, and the game adds another interesting complication with the need to split your attention between more involved tasks like inventory management and making sure the area around you is safe. Sadly, the last complication pushes things away from being interesting horror into slightly tedious gameplay, as low ammo reserves either ask you to fall back on boring practicality or waste your more exciting and explosive options before they’re truly needed. Having to retrieve your good equipment from your zombified former self is a good moment of weakness, but even if you collect your old gear, the ammo is so scarce that you can fall into dull cricket bat combat.

I really wish I could recommend Zombi on PC, because it's a fun and scary survival horror game, but being killed by zombies should happen more frequently than being killed by glitches.

As much as I’d love to heap praise on ZombiU for a smashing debut on a console that needed a good proof-of-concept, it ultimately comes off as a game that tried to get there the easy way—and failed. I applaud Ubisoft’s desire to bring fear back to the genre while leveraging the Wii U’s unique capabilities, but I wish they could’ve found a way to do so that didn’t require so much needless pandering.

Gamers eager for a new experience tailored to the Wii U likely have their eyes on ZombiU. It shows off nearly every feature of Nintendo’s new hardware, but the sum of these parts is a horrifying Frankenstein’s Monster. Good zombie games are a dime a dozen these days, and I can’t recommend ZombiU above them despite being the only undead shooter on the Wii U.

Managing your backpack and scanning environments for supplies and routes might have been fun on the second screen of a WiiU, but on Xbox One those features are watered down to just another mini-map and inventory menu. If that's what ZombiU added to the genre, then Zombi isn't left with much to hang its hat on. What does remain are genuinely tense interactions with the undead, at least, and the difficulty of survival is well executed. Ultimately, however, that's the case for a dozen other similar games, many of which do a lot of other things better than Zombi. At times it felt deserving of a score slightly higher or much lower than the one you see below, but ultimately, with a little getting used to, it's a functional but unpolished experience shambling down the streets of London.

There are some nice little ideas at work here in ZombiU (it even takes a page from Dark Souls and allows players to write messages for other players during their play through of the game), but for all its promise it all ends up being a mediocre affair. The questionable control scheme and overall sluggish pace of the game make it feel like, well, a zombie.

ZombiU is a game trapped in the wrong genre. The run-and-gun multiplayer modes emphasize the game's competent shooting mechanics and ability to create interesting enemy encounters. However, these two aspects are discouraged in the single-player campaign for the sake of survival. To compensate, there's the bare minimum of a story and a few simple puzzles. And so much cricket bat. ZombiU could have been an enjoyable action game, but instead it is a poor entry in the survival horror genre.

Pfui!

ZombieU sounded real great before it launched with the Nintendo WiiU system. If I had to guess this game needed about 6 more months of fine tuning. What we have here is a poor WiiU game that could have been released on the Wii. The controls are bad, the graphics are ass, and the combat system is a shit storm. Sure you might have fun with this game, but it is all in your head, trust me.

This game disappointed me... FHP OUT!

The Good
Use of the gamepad was intuitive, music and sound effects are well designed. I've heard multiplayer is good, but I don't play well with others so I wouldn't know.

The Bad
Use of the gamepad was counter intuitive during fight sequences in that you need it to switch weapons, and for a game that punishes you for dying, it's spiteful to put you in a powerless position for even just a moment, all while trying to cover yourself on the fly with no ammunition.

In general the controls are just terrible. Let's face it, the gamepad is basically a tablet computer in your hands, and with the controls it brings your arms far enough apart that you have to get used to playing with it as if it were a standard controller and there is a comfort level you have to find in this configuration. That being said, L3 for running was truly a bad idea as L and LZ are just below it, and were constantly disrupting my progress. I had to mentally remember to keep my left index finger snuggly under L so I didn't accidentally trigger it or LZ while running, especially during the circus time trials, which are forced on you when you just think you're getting a hang of the game. The option to invert look on the game pad was a glaring omission, as I'm an old school gamer and have always used flight-sim style controls on my FPS's. Mentally switching between the two view formats was such a headache that I literally re-programmed myself to play with standard controls. It's been an adjustment that has literally re-defined how I play games now.

Graphics are substandard, with poor textures and a garish "looking through a dirty car window" aspect to them. Because of this I truly wasn't scared, feeling as if I was watching some animated Zombie movie where poorly rendered dead things were being thrust at me.

Zombi U is blessed with at least one horrible programming snafu, such as when I was locked in a safe room in Buckingham Palace and was unable to do anything but quit my game and lose all my progress. Load times are also questionable.

Logic seems to be an option in this world, as you are left with nothing when you reincarnate and you start at level 1, but your weapons retain their upgrades and you always have a pistol and a bat. Additionally, zombies are typically lumbering unfocused creatures. Regardless of this fact, in Zombi U they keep up with you at an irritating rate, even when you run. They might as well be alive.

Disappointing character development puts a damper on the emotional draw of the game. The Prepper seems to be in his own little world, eventually falling under the illusion I'm working against him. The doctor in Buckingham Palace has an interesting flare, but his character is so undeveloped that we don't really care when his predicament comes to a dead end. Finally there are these spoken messages throughout the game that are intended to engage the player in the evolution of the "Blight", but they seem more like sprigs of parsley on a dinner plate; sure you can eat them but they are hardly satisfying. All of these factors augment the feeling that you're not interacting with anything, just running around bashing Zombies.

While I don't mind the next aspect so much, game play has been compared to Metroid where you backtrack for additional items and clues, and Zombi U is all about retracing your steps. But at least Metroid has tight controls that give you a fighting chance and doesn't compound the punishments if you don't play the game a specific way, such as this game where if you fail to survive during the final sequence, your shortcuts are removed.

While you're free to travel almost anywhere in London, I would have suggested a better chronological flow to the game, where we experience the passage of day and night, such as in Skyrim. I think this urgency to get under cover when night falls would have added an amazing dimension to the game, but time seems to be a prisoner along with us, where it's always night or always day depending on where you're at.

Some have said the game should be looked at as true survival horror but even the original "Resident Evil" gave you a save system to fall back on, Zombi U gives you a learning curve for wrapping your head around the idea that you are playing a body, not a character, even though they all have names. If they die, you can move onto the next one so having any feelings for these automatons is pointless. Yeah, it probably looked good on paper, but I think just like the lack of connection with the Prepper, all of these elements enhance ones indifference to the experience, and it totally works against the game.

A challenge for many and I do respect that, Zombie U is definitely a game that will monopolize your mind and give you plenty of work to do to get through it, but it could easily have been put on a mobil device and called "Bash the Zombies" and would have been just as effective.

Some have also said that you shouldn't have preconceived ideas about what this game should be, and assume those of us who don't like it are expecting a traditional FPS rather than a unique survival horror experience. I argue that I'm pretty open minded about gaming experiences, but in this stage of gaming technology we have a right to expect a $60 game to be fluid, varied, logical, bug free with a lot of content, and Zombi U is NONE of those things. Thanks to Ubisoft it never will be, and honestly I think my biggest peeve is Ubisoft's willingness to abandon this title even though it clearly has a strong fanbase, of which I was one for a short while. Correcting their programming errors with proper updates and perhaps offering one DLC package would have been nice, but they have declared this one DOA, and so should we.

The Bottom Line
An ugly little merry-go-round of tedious, repetitive and unfulfilling gameplay that's less about fun and more about work. That is, WHEN it works.
