Though Puyo Pop is a fairly dark game -- the playing background is charcoal gray -- the game holds up nicely on the GBA. And, of course, Puyo's highly-addictive style of gameplay doesn't hurt either. The Puyo series has developed quite a following in Japan, and even the U.S. where it has not had as heavy a presence. This entry really helps carry the reputation of the series and provides a strong game for the GBA system.

Now here's a puzzle-game remedy that'll put the zowzers back in your trousers. "Puyo Pop" is an amazingly simple concept. Just line up four pieces of the same color in any fashion and you have yourself a match. Even advanced players will dig this, as you can (with a little thought and planning) set up massive chain reactions that will make you look like Bad-Ass Gamer Supreme. This GBA version is a great deal too: Not only does it keep the original stuff intact, but it offers variation of play (like junk blocks that take extra hits to get rid of) and even better, a four-player link mode using only one cartridge. Outside of Tetris Attack, and Pokémon Puzzle League, this is probably the best handheld puzzle game around.

You may have never played it and disregard it because 'it looks like a load of old beans to stack'. Or you may be in that group of people who'll take all the beanery you can get Whatever camp you're on, we reckon it's still good.
