Pokémon Conquest is definitely one of the best spin-off Pokémon titles I’ve ever played, and has enough meat to it, along with some standard Pokémon trappings, that fans of the traditional series will find a lot to like here. For those with an interest in either strategy games or RPGs, but not sold on the other, Conquest is the perfect introduction to both. Watching your Pokémon and warlords evolve is a rewarding experience that will keep you coming back for more. Needless to say, the game is aimed toward Pokémon fans, though that doesn’t mean it’s exclusively for them; anyone can play and get a lot from it. Conquest is a good intro to each type of game it draws from—strategy, RPGs, Pokémon, and everything in between.

Pokémon Conquest comes out at just the right time, as it looks like the perfect summer vacation game. It's portable and breezy, yet has enough depth to keep gamers interested over the long run. In addition, it looks great even compared to a number of DS games, so DS owners won't feel like they're playing a game from the previous generation. This game is a breath of fresh air for the Pokémon series, and is perfect for series fans who want to do something new and different. It's also accessible to a wide audience, from strategy newbies to all but the hardest-core tactical gamers, who may find it a bit too easy, especially at first. For everyone else, this is a must-add to any portable gaming collection.

Pokémon fans should not hesitate to give Conquest a try. It offers a new and different way to enjoy the Pokémon universe, and is well worth your time and money. The same goes for strategy fans, or those looking to get into the genre. For all these reasons, and for the game’s creative and apt execution, I walked away from the experience thoroughly impressed and amazed. It easily stands alongside the similarly well-executed (and unexpectedly splendid) likes of Pokémon Snap as one of the greatest, most fully realized Pokémon spinoffs in existence.

Nintendo has teamed up with Tecmo Koei for yet another successful venture, this time bringing the world of strategic battling and Pocket Monsters together for what is without doubt the deepest and most impressive Pokémon spin-off so far. Fans of Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, Advance Wars, et al will certainly enjoy Pokémon Conquest, whilst newcomers to the genre are smoothly eased into the action.

In conclusion, Pokemon Conquest is an incredible game that is both easy to get into and incredibly deep at the same time. This game might not be for everyone, but those who are open minded enough to give this a shot (Pokemon fans and just RPG strategy fans alike) will find that this game is strange, charming, and just completely awesome.

Pokemon Conquest is a breath of fresh air into the somewhat stale Pokemon series. Creating a strategy game that is both accessible for newcomers and deep for veterans is quite a feat, and this game has done just that. There is potential here for a fantastic new spinoff series that can be just as popular as the main franchises. Incredible replay value, satisfying gameplay, and a perfect blend of two gaming worlds, Pokemon Conquest is an easy recommendation to anyone at all familiar with Pokemon or strategy games.

Pokémon is a franchise that I grew up on. I watched the anime, I bought the trading cards, and I played the games. For me, Pokémon Conquest crossed a threshold. There has always been a gap between what a young gamer would see watching the anime, and what he or she could accomplish in the game. Pokémon battles are supposed to be full of spatial strategy, and explosive action. The rock/paper/scissors style fights just never lived up to this. Despite my mixed feelings about the game’s audio and graphics, Pokémon Conquest is a game I have been waiting for most of my life: We are finally able to strategically place our Pokémon in a battlefield, and use attacks that behave uniquely. This is the way a Pokémon battle is supposed to be fought.

Worth Playing (8.5 out of 10)

Pokémon Conquest ends up being a fun title thanks to its simple but effective take on the strategy RPG genre. The presentation is done nicely, and the game manages to stick to some of the tenets of the series well enough to not alienate longtime Pokémon fans. Though the game feels like it breezes by rather quickly compared to the other series spin-offs, the bonus missions, the promise of downloadable content, and the prospect of local multiplayer give the game some legs and should appeal nicely to those who want to test their strategy chops with familiar characters. It's a very solid and fun effort that is possibly one of the last standout titles for the aging DS system.

Pokémon Conquest is the best Pokémon spin-off I’ve played since the heady days of Pokémon Snap and Pinball, and it’s deeper than either of those games by a wide margin. It doesn’t have the desperate stench of a cash-in that all too many Pokémon games do, and for the first time in ages it feels as though the franchise is breaking new ground (even if it isn’t really – I just haven’t had a chance to play the original Japanese games it’s based on). Don’t be put off by how odd the whole thing is, because this is a damn fine strategy game, and probably one of the last truly great DS games we’re going to see.

At the end of the day, despite some presentation and interface issues, Pokémon Conquest does a splendid job of combining two seemingly uncombinable franchises. With a wide variety of campaigns to experience at varying degrees of difficulty, the game can provide countless hours of strategic entertainment. Its a shame then, that forcing players to complete the intro campaign regardless of the player’s skill creates an unnecessary barrier to the real meat and potatoes of the experience. The campaigns after the main one make full use of the game's many kingdom management features and provide a much more in-depth experience. Despite this, Pokémon Conquest proves to be a remarkably engaging game, and a sign that the Pokémon franchise has plenty of life to it.

Perhaps the greatest achievement of Pokémon Conquest, however, is that it made us want to go back and play one of Koei’s earlier, duller and more convoluted Nobunaga games. And any game that can make us feel that way is worthy of high praise indeed.

Conquest doesn’t excel at anything it does, but it doesn’t really take any missteps either. For what it’s worth, the fact that someone is trying something new and outside-the-box with Pokemon is commendable in itself, and I hope that this game is enough of a success that it makes it viable for The Pokemon Company to keep trying new things with the franchise in the future.

Pokémon Conquest is definitely a great first entry into an offshoot of the series but does have some shortfalls throughout the title that could be improved on. A better presentation along with a more in profound story would have brought a lot more depth to the title and created a better overall package and the AI could have used a bit of work. It was also disappointing to find a lack of online support where you could play against others around the world, but if I find a friend who has the title I do look forward to playing against another human player to truly test my Pokémon Conquest skills. At the end of the day Tactical RPG fans and Pokémon fans alike should give this title a try as it can be quite fun.

However, all the extra touches and rules gave much more to Pokémon Conquest than it took away. If you were concerned that a strategy game starring Pokémon would be simplified for a wider audience, let go of your worries. PC retains the addictive qualities of battling and team-building we love in tactics titles while fully embracing everything strange about niche Japanese titles like this one. By coming at it from a different angle, Conquest finds its own special spot in the world of SRPGs.

Pokémon Conquest is a solid addition to any Nintendo DS library. Fans of the RPG series should enjoy this twist of tactics battling and will appreciate the level of complexity available with castle management, team building, and Pokémon training. It's nice to see a spin-off mash-up turn out to be a quality game.

Persist, though, and you certainly won’t be at a loose end, that’s for sure. With a lengthy single player campaign, thirty-three side-episodes to tackle after completing the story mode, and competitive Wi-Fi play, there really is quite a lot to do, and because of this feels like an excellent first effort in a new franchise. It’s easily the best entry in the series outside of the main installments, as it feels polished, solid, and complete. It does have some shortcomings, namely the lack of variety in the battling, but everything else mostly makes up for this hiccup. The upfront absurdity of Pokémon co-mingling with historic Japanese warriors may be hard for some to overcome, but once you do, you’ll find a deep strategy RPG that’s fun, challenging, and ultimately rewarding. If you like the Pokémon series, you’ll probably want to pick up this game.

Pokémon Conquest takes the Pokémon you know and recognize (and love?) and places them into the world of tactical turn-based strategy with little kicking and screaming. Unfortunately, its simplicity will turn away tactical purists, and its complexity and management demands will turn off fans of the traditional Pokémon RPG.
