What Platinum Games have created is possibly the antithesis of earlier Metal Gear games. Whereas the focus of the other games in the series was stealth, with combat as a secondary consideration and usually a last resort, Platinum Games have now flipped the coin to its other face and have completely reversed all this with MGR:R. The sword fighting mechanic is so unique and yet so intuitive and instinctive to use, it makes the player feel as though he has total control of the cyber-blade and leads to a real feeling of satisfaction when combat is over and slain foes lie sliced and diced in pieces at your feet. Get it all right and you feel like the cyber-ninja that the game really wants you to be, and what a sweet, sweet feeling that is.

So it's a bit on the short side, sure, and the visuals have a tiny hiccup here and there. Everything else about the game is perfect. Seriously, it's exactly right. If you like your action to be intense, dramatic, and totally ridiculous, this could very well be your game of the year.

Although I can always go for more classic, traditional Metal Gear games from Konami, I sincerely hope Platinum’s contract is renewed for a Revengeance 2 — it’s just that good.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is an amazing action game that offers a level of exacting fidelity that few can match. The short length isn’t a detractor--you’ll definitely come back for seconds given everything it has to offer. Hacking enemies to pieces hasn’t felt this good in a long time. Don’t be surprised if this isn’t the last we see of Raiden.

Chapeau!

Obviously, I enjoyed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance quite a bit and I think you will too. The story is a tad disappointing, but also oddly entertaining in an over-the-top fashion. However, I think if you’re a Metal Gear fan that comes for just that, you’ll be better off checking your expectations at the door. It doesn’t tie into the existing canon all that well, and outside of a single cameo and a handful of references to Metal Gear Solid 2, there’s not much tying this back into the standard Metal Gear universe. Provided you can get past that point, you’ll find a richly satisfying experience in Metal Gear Rising’s combat system, and I’d say that alone is well worth the asking price.

It's strange to play a Metal Gear game that so frankly encourages killing. It's also strange to play a Metal Gear game without an hour-long ending. We'll get used to it. Rising is exceptionally crude, and it is crude in a really graphic, sometimes disturbingly violent way that completely eclipses Metal Gear Solid's occasional poop joke. It is also expertly designed, carefully plotted, and even kind of subtle (for about a second or two), such that when it finally has its moment of "hey, don't you feel bad about ceaselessly murdering all these people?" it is completely earned.

Kojima made the right call to bring in the help of Platinum Games, as they have shown time and time again that they know how to make good action games and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is an example of the studio showing how they understand the genre while building on a concept that originally did not start as theirs. I can imagine some Metal Gear fans might not enjoy this style of gameplay, but if any are willing to give it a shot or if you are a fan of high paced action, then you owe yourself to jump into Revengeance’s stylish and exceptional top class gameplay and have a slash of a time.

Meristation (8.9 out of 10)

Revengeance may not play like a typical Metal Gear game, but Raiden's character arc justifies almost every change to the old formula. It's a beneficial dynamic, and the game's biggest success overall. It ultimately tests the hypothesis that there's more to the series than just Snakes and sneaking behind enemy lines, and for the most part, it passes the test. The story may not wow you with its political trappings, but Raiden's transformation and the gameplay that springs from it are the most alluring reasons to give him another shot as the leading man. If you're even vaguely interested in the Metal Gear series or intelligent hack-and-slash games, do not pass up a chance to play this exciting and addictive hybrid.

Despite its best efforts, developer Platinum Games sometimes gets in the way of its own pace -- especially for those who aren’t into the franchise. However, Rising’s troubles are rarely enough to derail the incredible momentum of an always-entertaining, action-oriented Metal Gear spinoff. Whether or not you have ever enjoyed Metal Gear, this is a must for anyone who appreciates melee-combat. It’s simple, fast, and clean, with enough supporting content like additional weapons and secrets to encourage a campaign replay – or more, if you find yourself obsessed with the idea of a no-kill run

Platinum Games knows this hack 'n' slash schtick inside out, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is no exception, drawing upon the developer's experience within the genre. While it's no Bayonetta, Raiden's bloodsoaked outing is a superb action title and one that well deserves a place within the Metal Gear legacy. Fancy a slash? Very much so, yes.

The collaborative efforts of Platinum Games and Kojima Productions culminate in an absurdly exciting action game grounded in the Metal Gear universe. Revengeance is unapologetic in the way it indulges your greatest power fantasies, often doing so with such a grandiose display of style that you'll be unable to wipe that ever-present smile from your face. It's fast, flashy, and fun--and it's easy to excuse Revengeance's hiccups when even the simplest battles rival the best cutscenes in any previous Metal Gear.

Even with that in mind, I found Metal Gear Rising to be a thrilling and engaging experience. The swordplay is fun, and it's really fascinating to see the different spots where either Kojima's or Platinum's signature styles shine through. It also has a wild final confrontation that shows elements of both, doling out some heavy-handed political preaching while also putting a man-sized ninja cyborg up against... well, something way crazier (and dirty-mouthed) than a man-sized ninja cyborg. If you're a value-minded individual that doesn't tend to replay games, Metal Gear Rising will only make you angry. But if seeing the state of the post-MGS4 world while slicing your way through everything that gets in your way sounds like a good time, well, that's because it is.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a reminder that not everything in the Metal Gear universe has to move at a snake's pace. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance may bear the acclaimed name, but it is far from what that series has become known for. It is an action game in the vein of Ninja Gaiden or DmC, with plenty of gore to spare. Sure, the story still focuses on military and political propaganda in a ridiculous fashion, but it lacks that certain charm (and the lengthy cut scenes) we are accustomed to in the series. Platinum has done a great job at salvaging what was potentially a lost game, and fans of Metal Gear will undoubtedly enjoy the references within. While not as polished as others in the genre, what it lacks in functionality, it makes up for with personality and blade mode.

Using the “you got chocolate in my peanut butter” methodology, Metal Gear Rising marks the culmination of two great studios finally coming together, and much like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, the result is devilishly delicious. Rising represents some of the most fluid and enjoyable combat mechanics to grace a modern action game, presented in a manner so over-the-top that it’s hard not to laugh hysterically at the sheer ridiculousness of the affairs. Featuring a story better than a hack ’n’ slash ought to have, fleshed out with hours of Codec conversations, it wholeheartedly deserves the “Metal Gear” moniker. Even with the game’s brevity and blisteringly difficulty working against it, it remains a respectable entry into both the Kojima Productions and Platinum Games canon, forever rendering Raiden as “Jack the Ripper”.

Still, the crux of combat holds Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance together despite its structural problems. The game's priorities are right, and cutting through cruft and seizing the core of the experience is a better result than the opposite end of the spectrum – a cluttered game that buries its heart in busywork. That's right, Fruit Ninja knows what's up.

All in all though, it's a Platinum game. That is to say, if you're familiar with their work, and are a fan of it, Revengeance won't create an exception to that perception. Sure the writing could use some tiding up, and cyborg-ninja battles would be even better if the way you could approach them was more diverse, but what we got delivers on what was advertised.

I’m a longtime Metal Gear fan, and Bayonetta is one of my favorite games of this generation, so I was elated when Konami and Platinum Games announced their partnership for Revengeance. However, this title isn’t Bayonetta wearing a Metal Gear skin; whether you are hoping for a meaningful expansion of the Metal Gear universe or a gratifying action experience, Revengeance falls short. Brutalizing cyborgs and hacking giant mechs to pieces is fun, but the restrictive design and lack of precision keep Raiden from capturing the best of both worlds.

While Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance can’t match the majesty of Metal Gear Solid’s epic campaigns or the fluid combat of top action titles like DmC, there’s still plenty to like in Raiden’s true action debut. If you can forgive some combat issues, you’ll dig the outlandish story and crazy carving mechanics.

Overall, the game has a good bit of replay value to make up for its short campaign length. Players that just want to play through this game for the story might want to consider a rental. For a Metal Gear fan, this game's overall universe will be perfect for you. It feels just like any other Metal Gear game visually but the gameplay has a focus on action this time. The stealth is still there, but it's not a focus anymore. Metal Gear Rising doesn't break boundaries, but it's a good start for a full action Metal Gear.

At its worst, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance has the feeling of a rescued project; the parts that don't belong stand out as the remnants of Kojima Productions' original vision (whatever that was), and the game doesn't feature the laser-precision focus on core mechanics found in other Platinum productions like Bayonetta and Vanquish. But while it relies on the same slow-mo mode used by Platinum since Viewtiful Joe, Revengeance still offers an exceptional and rewarding set of mechanics to master, and a fighting system that feels original in its execution. Revengeance isn't Platinum at the top of their game; it's the studio making the best of a bad situation -- even so, a troubled Platinum production still has plenty to offer.

If a sequel is made with a more consistent vision and a better development schedule, I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being one of the best hack-and-slash games ever made. Until then, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will simply stand as a "very good" action game that survived cancellation through the hard work of an incredible developer.

Overall Metal Gear Rising (excuse me) rises above its individual parts. The game comes together to create a flashy and memorable experience. Chopping enemies to tiny bits never gets old. The campaign is tightly paced and filled with tons of spectacle. While the combat is simplistic, it’s enjoyable enough to warrant a second or third play through on the harder levels. It’s a shame though, the opening levels give glimpses of the peaks we know both of these companies can provide, yet instead of getting the best of both worlds we get a decently entertaining middle ground.

Mind you, whether you’re a fan of the Metal Gear franchise or not, you’re biggest disappointment will arrive when the end credits start rolling and they do start to roll too soon. Just when you get into the spirit of the game, all the major bosses are dealt with way to quickly, one after another and then the main campaign is over. All the features, boss fights, stealth elements and VR missions just can’t compensate for the game’s relatively short story mode, as well as some nasty AI bugs and annoying camera issues.

Men likt förbaskat.

It's brief, too, with the final zandatsu delivered after just six hours. Yes, there are VR missions to unlock, novelty items to buy and battle rankings to ace, but it still feels lean. And the last hour makes you tackle a previous level in reverse, fight an inexplicably easy boss, and sneak through a warehouse before enduring a final boss fight sapped of pacing by waffly cutscenes. But then you grumble through the credits, hop back into the game, chop a man's shins off, and all is right again. There's a great game in Revengeance, buried under the rubble of a previous franchise collapse. With a little less zatsu and a little more dan, Platinum Games could be on to something.

When Revengeance is firing on all cylinders, it is a sight to behold. Watching Raiden tear through enemies while a dynamic speed metal soundtrack plays in the background is undeniably impressive. After spending an extended amount of time with the game, though, it becomes obvious that beauty is only skin-deep. Revengeance is more impressive to watch than it is to play, and it's certainly no Bayonetta.
