Gaming Age (A-)

Overall Crysis 3 is just what you would expect at the end of a generation cycle. A FPS that is deep not only in its level design and scope, but tells a deep story, with deep game play mechanics. You will not find many games that do it all in one fell swoop. For those who have not followed the series, either buy Crysis and Crysis 2 before you dive into this new adventure, or pay attention to the included video in Crysis 3 and then dive right in; Passing up on this is not an option if you really call yourself a FPS fan. Crysis 3 is about as addictive, complex and complete of a FPS a you could hope to find. I just can’t wait to see what the developers come up with in the next cycle of consoles.

Overall, Crysis 3 is easily recommendable. While the campaign is a bit on the short side and the enemy AI is suspect at times, it's an enjoyable and immersive experience. The multiplayer game is fun, both because it's well-constructed and because there aren't any other games out there that equip you in a nanosuit. While the game is probably not the best in the series, it is one of the better shooters available.

While there is a satisfying sense of resolution to Prophet’s story, the short play time makes Crysis 3 feel more like an extended epilogue than a complete final act in a trilogy. Still, the openness of the levels and the variety of skills at Prophet’s disposal makes each chapter a joy to play and replay. The literal urban jungle provides a sense of continuity with the final events in the last game, yet what’s more important is the believability of this decaying metropolis, however otherworldly it might be. The gameplay foundation laid by the previous installments helps add considerable replay value to the campaign, and especially the expanded multiplayer. These are enough to recommend Crysis 3 to any shooter fan as long as they don’t put a dollar amount on campaign length.

Crysis 3’s evolutionary enhancements don’t move the needle for the series very far, but the core nanosuit-based gameplay is still thrilling. If you have a rig that can run the PC version of Crysis 3, I strongly recommend you go this route. The high-resolution textures, realistic lighting, and detailed facial animations gives you a taste of the graphical fidelity we expect to be standard in next-generation consoles.

So that’s Crysis 3 in a whole bunch of nutshells. It’s a lot of fun to play, despite the string of annoyances and disappointments that hold it back from being truly great. What Crysis 3 does right, however, it does extremely right and it’s definitely better than Crysis 2; it just could have been so much more.

It’s not quite a next generation experience come early, but it’s a superbly controlled, tightly paced and tactically flexible shooter with a satisfyingly focussed story, and an excellent way to tie up the Crysis series... for now.

Though Crysis 3’s (admittedly beautiful) solo campaign never feels quite as strong as it could be, its enthralling competitive multiplayer sits comfortably among the strongest offerings of this console generation. Unless you have no interest in competing against your fellow human beings, these modes alone make the game worth buying.

If you go in understanding that Crysis 3 delivers blockbuster entertainment and multiplayer that iterates on Call of Duty's perks system, you'll be fine. But if you want Crysis to stake a claim all its own, you might be disappointed. But don't let that stop you from enjoying a solid action sandbox like this one. Crysis 3 might not reinvent itself into a grander vision, but like a good Hollywood sequel, it sticks to what it does well and iterates its formula into an impressive video game.

Crytek has always managed to work wonders with the basic "alien-shooting FPS" template, and Crysis 3 is no exception. Years from now, Crysis 3 will serve as a fond memory of what video games were capable of in 2013, technologically and, to a lesser degree, otherwise.

This game is a really good game, when you can play it. I don’t want to dock the points for the game as the company states they are working to fix the freezing issue as well as some of the other inconveniences of the game. With that said, I cannot fully suggest picking the game up until these corrections are made as it really makes it almost impossible to play and even harder to enjoy the game when it constantly freezes. Once these issues are corrected, I would strongly recommend this game to all that enjoy first person shooters.

The Crysis franchise has always been known for its visually stunning games and Crysis 3 is no exception. It is indeed the kind of game you will use to showcase how good a shooter can look on the Xbox 360. Unfortunately, underneath those slick looking graphics is a shooter that is unquestionably good, but could have been so much better. In a market saturated with shooters, it takes something special to rise above the pack. Crysis 3 was on the cusp of doing so, but in the end it didn’t quite knock one out of the park.

Crysis 3 attempts to strike a balance between Crysis and Crysis 2, but in doing so manages to lose a little bit of what made each game appealing. The result is a title that doesn't truly match the open-ended excitement of the first game nor the revelatory empowerment of the second, yet manages to provide enough of both to at least tantalize, even if it doesn't completely satisfy. Solo play is shorter than previous installments and not as enjoyable, but multiplayer goes some way toward apologizing for it by stepping up its game and providing a gripping new experience in Hunter mode. This is a game that feels like the very essence of a "third installment" -- Familiar to the point of looking overplayed, but nonetheless refined and suffering no lack of quality.

The single-player lacks the replayability for multiple playthroughs, and despite some interesting game modes, most people just seem to be playing on Team Deathmatch at the moment, and there are better games to play for this. But for all its grandiose action set-pieces and prophet heroically saving the day like Alcatraz and Nomad before him, I’ll always go back to that overgrown train yard: low on ammo, vision obscured by long grass, scared shitless and running for life from Ceph Stalkers. Wonderful.

Crysis 3 is fantastic to look at, successfully portraying an uneasy partnership of the natural and the artificial. As the story presses on, the conflict deepens and the visuals darken; it's as if you can feel the evil spreading throughout the city. It's unfortunate that the game doesn't reach the heights of its predecessors. The campaign is several hours shorter than Crysis 2's, and doesn't reproduce the thrills that lit up the previous games. Yet on its own terms, this is a full-featured sci-fi shooter that makes it a lot of fun to torture extraterrestrial abominations with the burning rage of their own weapons.

Overall, Crysis 3 is a gratifying shooter experience. Even though the campaign is on the shorter side, there are a few visual hiccups, and some of the enemy AI is unbalanced, those small gripes get overshadowed by Crysis 3's tactical gameplay, beautiful environments, and superb online multiplayer. While not treading new ground for the FPS genre, Crysis 3 is a solid shooter that will keep you entertained through the campaign and long after with its addictive online modes.

The story's over, then, and the Nanosuit's had what might be its final airing: is this the conclusion the Crysis series deserves? Not quite: that true panoramic freedom is still missing in action, the campaign's rather undernourished as it rushes you into the final act and the fiction feels increasingly forgettable. There are charms here, though, if you boot up the tactical display and stick to the shadows. There's the silent kill in glorious surroundings; there's the swish of an arrow, the creak of a bow.

Crysis 3 tries to have its own identity, and while it doesn’t completely fail in that department, it certainly feels extremely familiar if you’ve played your share of shooters this generation. The sometimes stunning visuals, fun gameplay options, and solid multiplayer mode elevate the problematic campaign a little above average, but we’d be hard pressed to recommend it to anyone who is experiencing any kind of shooter fatigue. If you ARE a fan of the Crysis franchise, though, you may still find elements to enjoy about the game, but if you seek to find a totally new FPS experience or even just a breath of fresh air, you will be very disappointed with Crysis 3. It may not be the best in the series or live up to its full potential, but it remains an enjoyable game nonetheles

By facilitating a player-led approach to combat, Crysis 3's six-hour, single-player campaign is as fun as you make it. However, the multiplayer mode is soon to have competition from Crytek's own free-to-play Warface. These individual facets combine to put Crysis 3 in a peculiar position and mean that, while it's worth the entrance fee, it may soon find itself redundant.

Crysis 3 is one of the most technically impressive games I have experienced to date. If you have a PC that can run it, I highly recommend picking it up, if only for showing off your rig. As for the game itself, it lives and dies with the multiplayer for me. I loved the new Hunter mode, and I still enjoy the core online game more than most other shooters. The campaign on the other hand just felt like a mess. The enemy AI is atrocious, and the sheer execution is just boring at times. Despite its brevity, I found myself wanting it to end long before it actually did. This is a shame, as every other aspect is executed so well. I just wish it was easier to recommend for gamers that don’t have an interest in competitive online play.

That's my feeling about all of Crysis 3, really. It's serviceable and, again, it looks great on the PC, but was this trip really necessary? It's an average experience, overall, and in a genre that continues to be packed full of competition, you'd probably be better off finding a discounted copy of Crysis 2 or, if the large combat areas of the original Crysis really float your boat, spend some time with Far Cry 3, instead.

It's ironic, then, that the approach taken by the latest entry in the franchise that got Crytek noticed, Far Cry 3, would be a far better direction for future instalments of Crysis to take. Crytek made its name giving players an open sandbox to mess around in: Ubisoft has refined it, and we'd love to see the nanosuit and its abilities transposed to a true open world for players to, well, dick around in.

It looks beautiful, of course. Everybody knows Crytek can work magic on a gaming PC, but it’s the Faustian pact that the studio has presumably entered into in order to conjure such imagery from consoles (while avoiding Far Cry 3 levels of performance) that has us concerned. What was lost along the way? The first game’s soul was traded away by Crysis 2, but at least that game was aware of its limits, using its new walls to guide players through a series of emergent, reactive encounters. Crysis 3 has neither direction nor freedom, though it does have human weapons, alien weapons, a cloaking device, an Armour mode, and a bow. And with this many options at your disposal, Crysis 3 insists, surely you must be having fun.
