Auf dem Platz begeistert mich der herrliche Offensiv-Fußball mit knackscharfen Diagonalpässen, rasanten Tempowechseln und dieser bittersüßen Unberechenbarkeit. Der Spielaufbau ist allerdings immer noch flipperanfällig, vor allem online geht es manchmal wie beim Eishockey hin und her. Dafür ist der Netzcode stabil und die KI wesentlich aufmerksamer. Deine größte Stärke: Tolle Antizipationen in der Ballannahme sowie individuelle Manöver, die für einzigartige Situationen sorgen – leider werden diese manchmal von den Torhütern zunichte gemacht. Aber hier kann ich den Gegner gezielt tunneln, mir den Ball für den Schuss elegant ablegen und jederzeit manuell passen. Das Spiel fließt nicht zäh, es läuft angenehm frei bei voller Kontrolle über den Ball. All das schreit nach Training, verlangt Skills, blitzschnelle Reaktionen und wenn der eine Pass dann durch die Viererkette jagt, wird man mit magischen Momenten belohnt. Kurzum: Sehr guter Fußball.

Die vielseitige Offensiv-Dynamik in „PES 2013" ist eine echte Kampfansage. Sie ist kaum zu schlagen - und das hat viele Gründe: Zum einen stimmt dank optimalem Tempo nun auch der Spielfluss. Vor allem aber belohnt der Konami-Kick spontane und instinktive Aktionen mit bunten Torraumszenen. Sie verlieren sich daher nie in erprobten Angriffsmustern. Gemeinsam mit der schwungvolleren Pass- und Schussphysik mausert sich „PES 2013" zur unberechenbaren Fußball-Simulation. So kann auf Konamis Bolzplätzen alles passieren, vom 0:0 bis zum 6:2 - ganz wie im echten Fußball. Und da genau der inzwischen die Messlatte der Simulationen ist, macht „Pro Evolution Soccer 2013" vieles richtig.

How does PES 2013 compare to FIFA 13? It's still very much an apples to oranges comparisons, even with PES finally matching its long-term rival. FIFA excels in control, presentation and licences, while PES 2013 has depth, unpredictability and speed. That this instalment should even cause the 'FIFA or PES?' conversation to flare up again without an obvious winner is a big enough step forward for a series that has lost its way. But there's no doubt the real mark of victory for PES 2013 is in those howled celebrations whenever a 35-yard volley is cracked into the back of the net, a sign that it has finally recaptured the multiplayer magic that defined its early PlayStation years.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 has taken some massive steps in the right direction, and is a definite improvement over the last few offerings. The gameplay is fun and rewarding with a number of game modes that all help add to its longevity. Compared to FIFA, it still feels like it is at least a year behind in terms of the overall presentation, but the new Total Control features certainly match, and in places better those on offer from EA. It’s been a rough few years for Konami’s football franchise, but with PES 2013 it appears as if things are back on track.
