Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

If you like challenging, open-ended stealth that lets you flex your imagination, you should seriously consider giving it a go. And don’t worry if you haven’t played a Metal Gear Solid game for years, or ever for that matter: there’s a backstory option on the main menu that will get you up to speed. Or you can read my beginner’s guide. Metal Gear Solid has been absent from PC for far too long, and this is a hell of a comeback. Now I just have to come to terms with Kiefer Sutherland replacing David Hayter as the voice of Big Boss, but I'm getting there, one day at a time.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a nice bite-sized piece of content that will help players get a good grasp on what to expect when The Phantom Pain is released sometime next year. It retains the stealth features hardcore fans have come to enjoy, while at the same time implementing various modern mechanics that will appeal to an even greater audience. This also marks the first time Kiefer Sutherland replaces David Hayter as Big Boss, cementing the actor’s place in the series. While it may only take an hour or so to complete the main mission that acts as the prologue to the next game, the PC port of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes not only lives up to expectations, but surpasses them in creating an overly satisfying sandbox to sneak through.

Nichts gegen gut gemachte Appetithäppchen. Doch auch wenn Konami mit seinem kurzen Schleichabenteuer andeutet, wie gut The Phantom Pain werden kann, stören mich die deutlichen KI-Mängel, besonders, sobald man von Wachen entdeckt wird. Die Alarmbereitschaft hält nur äußerst kurz an und die KI-Burschen geben die Suche nach euch viel zu schnell wieder auf. Dabei erlebten wir auch mehrfach kuriose Momente. Etwa wenn wir uns von mehreren Gegnern umringteinfach auf einen Wachturm flüchten und dort reglos und geduckt bleiben. Obwohl die Wachen uns gesehen haben, bleiben sie dumpf unten stehen und wundern sich, wo wir abgeblieben sind. Trotz solcher Macken bezieht Ground Zeroes einen hohen Reiz aus den vielen Möglichkeiten, sich frei durch die klasse inszenierte Gefängnisanlage zu bewegen.

Obwohl Ground Zeroes keine restlose Begeisterung in mir auslösen kann und die verspätete PC-Version trotz guter Umsetzung quasi alle Schwächen den Konsolen-Vorbilder beibehält, hat der Prolog seine Mission erfüllt: Ich bin gespannt wie ein Flitzebogen, wie es nach dem dramatischen Cliffhanger-Finale mit Big Boss weitergeht und welche Pläne der mysteriöse XOF-Kommandant Skull Face verfolgt. The Phantom Pain kann kommen und hat dann hoffentlich wieder mehr klassische Elemente und eine bessere KI im Gepäck.

With a solid stealth adventure that has some room for more aggressive play Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is worth picking up for those that love a bit of stealth game play. However, due to the short nature of the main missions you will need to be willing to partake in the alternative methods of play to get value on your dollar.

Schon auf den Konsolen habe ich Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes mit Begeisterung durchgespielt, war allerdings von der extrem kurzen Spielzeit geradezu erschüttert. Denn der Gefängnisausflug mit Snake macht definitiv Lust auf mehr. Die Schleichmechanik funktioniert hervorragend, die Gegner sind einigermaßen clever, die Atmosphäre stimmt, und auch die technische Umsetzung ist für den PC ausgezeichnet gelungen. Eigentlich könnte ich Ground Zeroes bedenkenlos empfehlen, wäre da nicht der geringe Umfang. Klar, Speed-Runner und Highscore-Fetischisten dürfen gerne zugreifen, zumal auch noch ein paar Nebenmissionen an Bord sind, alle anderen sollten Snakes PC-Comeback aber mit Vorsicht genießen. Denn wirklich viel Spiel gibt's bei Ground Zeroes nicht, eben nur ein Appetithäppchen - wenn auch ein besonders leckeres.

Kein großes Kino, aber ein stimmungsvoller Aufgalopp zu „The Phantom Pain“. Trotz der kurzen Hauptmission bietet „Ground Zeroes“ mit den umfangreichen Zusatzeinsätzen, verschiedenen Schwierigkeitsgraden und zahlreichen Sammelobjekten ausreichend Futter für Schleich-Liebhaber.

As a prologue to “proper” Metal Gear Solid 5, Ground Zeroes does set things in motion and introduces you to some of the presumed big players in the main game. As a singular game, it is extremely slight content-wise, but if you’re a fan of stealth games, or a die-hard Metal Gear fan, it’s an easy pick up. Again, it’s not bad at all, but there just isn’t enough meat on the bone for most people to really get into. Still, if you like these types of games, it’s worth a look.

Tout dans Ground Zeroes, sinon le gameplay, peine à emporter l'adhésion espérée quand on accueille un épisode canonique de Metal Gear Solid, ce qui laisse songeur quant à la nécessité, ou même l'opportunité, d'avoir sorti ce DLC anticipé. Que l'on ne s'y trompe pas : cela reste une bonne démo, un amuse-gueule pour apaiser l'attente des fans, mais rien n'y figure qui saurait faire passer l'expérience pour autre chose qu'un foutage de gueule aux yeux de ceux qui ont lâché quasiment trente euros dans l'affaire. On est loin, naturellement, de la démo jouable de Metal Gear Solid 2, offerte, qui était de surcroît meilleure à tous points de vue. Reste que l'aura de la série rayonne toujours derrière la frustration d'un contenu trop chiche, preuve aussi que Ground Zeroes n'est pas totalement passé à côté de son sujet, et qu'au bout du compte, l'envie de découvrir Metal Gear Solid V sort sensiblement renforcée de ces deux heures de promenade.

Ground Zeroes best serves existing Metal Gear Solid fans, and the kind of player who's into self-improvement. If you like to play a game once and it's done, pass on by. If you're on the fence, wait a few months for it to go on sale. But if you like games about getting better, where you're mastering deep systems and having your skills progressively tested, then Ground Zeroes is the best 50-hour demo you'll ever play.
