Even Platinum fans will be surprised by this. Played with patience and a willingness to learn, this isn't just the most surprising game on Wii U - it's the best.

It's astonishing that a game could be so many things, and yet be so good at all of them. The Wonderful 101 has flair, and function, and style down-pat. It excels at everything it wants to do, and its only detriment is that it is so terrible at telling you how to do all these amazing things. It's a shame that the poorly managed tutorial will drive people away, because this is the best we've seen out of the action genre since Bayonetta, and a hell of an argument for the WiiU all by itself.

The Wonderful 101 is one of those rare games that keeps getting more and more fun the more that you play it. If you have the dexterity to handle the controls and the patience to deal with a few momentum-killing platforming/puzzle bits, you’re in for a heck of a time.

The Wonderful 101 can be overwhelming, and the initial impression can be that it's simply bombarding the senses too much, confusing both the eyes and the thumbs. The key is to play at the right difficulty level and accept its insanity, work with its peculiar logic and remain open-minded to its mechanics. In return it delivers an exceptional experience in which no scenario is too outrageous, no enemy too exaggerated or no set-piece too excessive. It's not perfect, with some control quirks, fiddly moments and a multiplayer mode that feels tacked on, but so much about this title is thrilling. There's simply no other game on the market with such a focus on ridiculous fun - this really is a must-have title for the Wii U.

Quite frankly, there’s nothing else quite like The Wonderful 101 on the market. It’s an incredibly polished game that’s few blemishes are easily overlooked. If you own a Wii U, you owe it to yourself to see how wonderful The Wonderful 101 truly is.

These complaints do little to diminish a game that is otherwise as wonderful as its name suggests. While its action and playful aesthetic are easy to admire, perhaps The Wonderful 101’s best quality is evoking a child-like innocence. The game makes tired but universal themes like honor and loyalty feel as cool as they did when you were in pajamas, eating sugary cereal and staring at glowing box. It’s a kind of wild-eyed enthusiasm that rarely happens, and when it does it should be cherished. Platinum Games have created something out of love, and The Wonderful 101 will likely inspire only more of it.

It's a completely unique experience for fans of action. It has some technical hang ups, but they're pretty easy to tune out once you get into the action.

With The Wonderful 101, game director Hideki Kamiya has made a game featuring a stumpy posse of cartoon heroes, with the stylish combo strings of Bayonetta, and the bouncy, vibrant style of Viewtiful Joe. This is an ambitious, funny, and inventive game that's keen to impress but slightly scrappy in its presentation, packed with ideas but is slightly confused about how to express all its abundant creativity. This might not be the Wii U's killer app, but it's a much-needed shot in the arm.

The Wonderful 101 is a great game tripped up by a drawing mechanic that may prove imprecise for some users. If Platinum's action games are your thing and you have a Wii U, it's a must-own.

Given its broad appeal, it could be seen as a shame that this new brand is launching on a relatively unpopular console, but this is the sort of title that bodes well for players who want to see a hardcore-centric Nintendo again. Here's hoping that when the Wii U picks up steam, The Wonderful 101 is still around.

The Wonderful 101 makes you feel nostalgia, not so much for the TV shows or games it references as for memories of waking up at 7am on the weekends to watch shows and spending the rest of the day acting out the heroics. That's why the occasional intrusion of an adult tone is so discordant. This is a love letter to childhood innocence, to that age where truth and justice and awesome costumes seem almost real, as well as the coolest things in the world. In that light, picking at it seems churlish, because The Wonderful 101 doesn't make you feel like a hero; it makes you feel like hundreds.

Like most Platinum games, however, whatever issues might plague Wonderful 101 are glossed over with charm and an idiosyncratic vision. Sorting through dozens of heroes, picking out your leader and imbuing him or her with a personality feels like dumping your toy box on the floor and gathering up the ones you want to play with. The game's major characters have preset identities and points of view, just as cartoons will define the most important characters from a line of toys, but the large number of additional characters allow for ample creativity. You might be too busy double-teaming GEATHJERK with a giant sword and massive hammer made out of superheroes to craft an intricate back-story for Wonder-Clean, the 31-year-old crime-fighting dental hygienist, but the opportunity is there.

Finally, the game's tall difficulty belies its accessible aesthetic: make no mistake, this is a far more demanding proposition than its Pikmin cousin. And yet, these are the hallmarks that make Platinum's output some of the most exciting work in contemporary video games: scruffy invention in a playpen that allows for player mastery. In the midst of this riot of ideas and unrefined energy we can perceive some of the Wii U system's idiosyncratic wonder. It may not be a game to sell a system, but The Wonderful 101 provides ample justification for Nintendo's eccentric hardware.

Game Informer Magazine (7.5 out of 10)

The Wonderful 101 experiments with inventive concepts and has plenty of charm. No matter how noble its intentions, it is brought down by the same thing that has ruined so many other superhero teams. The individual aspects are interesting alone, but they just have trouble working together.

IGN (7.4 out of 10)

The Wonderful 101 is both a showcase for the amazing potential of the Wii U’s GamePad and for its pitfalls. It’s amazingly inventive and full of color and bright-eyed character, but its control problems are so persistent they’re unignorable. Even that doesn’t ruin what is otherwise a clever and adventurous action game, but The Wonderful 101 is kept from being as truly wonderful as it might have been.

Hardcore Gamer Magazine (3.5 out of 5)

Long story short, The Wonderful 101 is a very interesting game that won’t appeal to most people. While the combat might be deeper and more complex than Bayonetta, having to draw the shapes won’t appeal to everyone. This is also true for the cinematic feel and unique stage mechanics. If you don’t mind these things, however, then there is well over a hundred hours of gameplay to be found here. Between unlocking all the characters, getting every collectible and missions to complete, The Wonderful 101 gives more than enough reason for you a reason to dust off your Wii U or simply pick one up a little early to experience it.

Shacknews (7 out of 10)

As bombastic as the adventure can be, the game does suffer from poor pacing issues. Most of the time, finding the right path isn't always obvious and too often did I wander aimlessly trying to figure out what to do next. Levels are already pretty lengthy, and these unanticipated pit stops became frustrating slogs. But once you figure out the path, there are many reasons to come back and keep playing, as there are unlockables sprinkled throughout the world, new members of the Wonderful 100 to discover, and higher scores to achieve. There are even new difficulties to unlock, with the already-challenging "Normal" being the most difficult option out-of-the-box. The controls may be cumbersome, and the pacing may be faulty, but it's a romp worth sticking with. With its superpowered premise, memorable characters, and fascinating gameplay gimmick, The Wonderful 101 is a theatrical blockbuster that's perfect for Wii U.

The Wonderful 101 is a good game … at times. Once I got the hang of its combo system, the battles were nearly always exciting and challenging, but Platinum’s Wii U debut has too much filler and a busted camera.

Gameplay (Benelux) (61 out of 100)

But is it worth persevering to find these depths? Sadly, the answer has to be: ‘not really’. With Nintendo's Pikmin 3 having just demonstrated such mastery of both game design and the Wii U hardware, it’s disappointing to see such a superficially similar yet confused and messy game following it mere weeks later. A new IP from Platinum with swagger and style is something gamers have wanted for Wii U for so long. But the reality is that its gameplay just doesn’t gel and numerous baffling design choices get in the way so as to render all the astonishing style moot. It just isn't very fun. And ‘Mediocre 101’ isn’t good enough.
