Description official descriptions
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 is the sequel to RollerCoaster Tycoon. The player once again takes the role of a theme park manager, tasked with building a park using various rides and attractions, such as restrooms, food/drink stalls, bumper cars, ferris wheels, go-karts, and, of course, roller coasters. There are over twenty different buildable rollercoaster types, from simple wooden coasters to complex inverted coasters. Many new rides and attractions are featured in the game, including handy "stalls" like the ATM machine and the first aid room, as well as lots of new scenery and theming items, such as the Pirate theme. Many scenery items now have wall and roof sections for higher levels of park customization.
There are a lot of scenarios to complete, from easy ones that only ask a certain park rating and guest count to extreme ones, such as making a yearly profit of $100,000 with rides that must have a certain rating, without letting the park rating drop to a certain number. The monetization mechanics are different - in the same scenario, the park can only have purchasable ride tickets or park entrance tickets, never both, while items from shops and stalls are purchasable in both cases. Staff wages have been raised as well.
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 keeps the same game engine as the original, and adds a few new touches, such as guests observing rides as they move, and slight pathfinding improvements so that guests will no longer get lost on wider footpaths. There are improved landscaping tools, including one that clears all scenery in the selected area, and objects can be placed on different heights, including on top of each other, by holding the Shift key.
Another notable addition are the in-built scenario editor and roller coaster designer, which allow for more fan-created material to be created and shared. In addition, most ride track designs from the original RollerCoaster Tycoon (with the exception of the Steel Mini Roller Coaster due to some sections missing in RollerCoaster Tycoon 2) can be imported and used in RollerCoaster Tycoon 2.
The game makes use of the Six Flags license, which include some of the franchise's largest and best-known parks, track designs (which can not be edited), and scenery, as well as a scenario where players can create their own Six Flags park.

If this was an expansion pack, it would have been good. As a game, it just blows.
The Good
Well, Roller Coaster Tycoon, after many rave reviews, fans, and expansion packs, has a sequel.
The one thing that is excellent about Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 is the coaster editor, where you can build your own coaster without the worry of cost and landscape. Unfortunately, that's about it of the good stuff.
The Bad
Graphically, RCT2 makes no technological leap. The graphics are the same old RCT graphics, which were great those years ago, but now look bland and boring. In my opinion, the makers were just too scared to change the look. Same goes for sound and basically everything else.
The Bottom Line
If this was an expansion pack, it would have been good. As a game, it just blows. Roller Coaster Tycoon should have been upgraded with new graphics and gameplay, while keeping some of the things that made it so popular. I rate RCT2, a 1 out of 5.

The Good
Everything about "Rollercoaster Tycoon" that's good is good about this one.
The Bad
Frankly, just how is this game a sequel? It's the same game. Despite being years since the original was released, there has been no improvement in graphics, sound, iunterface, or gameplay. It's exactly identical, but with some new maps and rides.
The Bottom Line
This is nothing more than Rollercoaster Tycoon with some extra content of the sort you'd download for free. A complete ripoff; if you own the original you have no reason to buy this.

Trivia
German promotion
In Germany, Infogrames started a nice point-of-sale promotion for RCT2. There were Scream-o-Meters, which measured the scream intensity of people attending a Scream Competition.
Guest name cheats
All the guest name cheats from the first game apply, with the following new ones:
- Carol Young - her happiness is reduced to zero
- Donald Macrae - frequently gets lost
- Elissa White - when riding a roller coaster based on those constructed by Intamin Amusement Rides (Giga Coaster or Inverted Impulse Coaster), she thinks "Brilliant...it's an Intamin Ride."
- Katie Rodger - immediately wants to leave the park
