Activision's X-Men: Next Dimension delivers mutant madness to North American retail shelves

Santa Monica, CA - October 22, 2002 - X-Men fans can now engage in battles of epic Super Hero proportion with the release of Activision, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: ATVI) X-Men: Next Dimension for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system and the Nintendo GameCube. Currently available at North American retail outlets, X-Men: Next Dimension leaves traditional arena-based fighting games in its wake, as more than 20 infamous mutants fight across expansive 3-D levels replete with interactive environments and combat-induced damage. X-Men: Next Dimension is rated "T" ("Teen" - violence and suggestive themes - content suitable for persons ages 13 and older) by the ESRB and carries a suggested retail price of $49.99. The game will be available later this month on the Xbox video game system from Microsoft.

"The power of the current-generation consoles allows us to provide fans with the same incredible super hero battles found in films and only imagined in comics," said Larry Goldberg, executive vice president, Activision Worldwide Studios. "These unbelievable Marvel characters are now able to fight across wide-open areas using amazing power combos and dynamic moves, making this the most challenging X-Men confrontation yet."

X-Men: Next Dimension begins when Bastion, the leader of Operation: Zero Tolerance, and his Prime Sentinels kidnap Forge and plan to use his powers to create the ultimate weapon to annihilate mutants once and for all. Forge's destiny lay in wait as the X-Men must do the unthinkable and team up with their greatest enemy, Magneto, and his Brotherhood of Mutants in order to save him.

X-Men: Next Dimension lets players participate in enormous cinematic battles where mutants challenge Sentinels throughout vast multi-tiered levels filled with destructible objects. Incredible fighting combos, aerial combat and 8-way movement all contribute to the magnitude of the action at hand. Fans can fight as one of 20 popular X-Men, plus four secret characters, in five different gameplay modes -- including an epic Story Mode that provides gamers with a developed storyline, a Versus Mode which enables players to step out of the story and fight one-on-one, as well as Arcade, Survival and Practice Modes. Furthermore, the PlayStation 2 and Xbox platforms have integrated surround sound support that will add to the overwhelming destruction gamers can create in X-Men: Next Dimension.

Press Release - GameCube and PlayStation 2

Wolverine, Storm, shake hands. Let's have a clean fight, OK?

X-Men: Next Dimension brings everyone's favorite mutants to the Nintendo GameCube in a superpowered 3D fighting game featuring massive environments and an explosive Story Mode. Only a few camera and sound glitches mar this smart-looking package.

Many Mutants

With the huge list of characters from comic books, movies and cartoons, you are sure to spot your favorite. Each outcast uses his or her unique gifts, such as claws, weapons, or mind powers, to perform an extensive list of moves.

The 16 X-Men mutants are:

* Wolverine
* Storm
* Cyclops
* Phoenix
* Gambit
* Beast
* Sabretooth
* Magneto
* Mystique
* Toad
* Nightcrawler
* Rogue
* Havoc
* Juggernaut
* Psylocke
* Forge

Eight additional unlockable characters bring the total to 24 different fighters.

Dynamic Levels

Mastering interactives in each of the 21 environments is important to winning. For example, you can knock your opponent through a window, then pursue into the next area. One level allows you to knock your enemy off a third-story ledge and into a parked taxi. This multi-tiered level design adds a welcome dynamic to an already exciting fighting system.

The exhaustive fighting engine includes aerial combat, combo chains, recovery attacks and counters. Max out your special meter, then unleash a powerful combo that will string together more than 20 hits. Ouch.

Many Ways to Brawl

You can fight a nonstop barrage of enemies in Survival Mode or assemble a gang of up to eight characters in Team Mode. The Story Mode and Arcade Mode give you two ways to play as a single player and the VS Mode provides ample support for two players.

Graphics

The graphics in X-Men: Next Dimension accurately represent the X-Men universe. Cool effects include the holographic surroundings in the Practice Section. Special moves like Phoenix's fiery attacks and Storm's lightning-charged counter move will dazzle you. Each special attack is punctuated by a Matrix-like slo-mo blur effect. For a sharper and clearer image, select the Progressive Scan option when playing on a TV set that supports that feature.

Characters are detailed nicely with trademark outfits and body types. Beast is hulking and massive while Rogue is lean and mean. Extra outfits can be unlocked. Once in a great while the camera misses the action, leaving you to wonder where your fighters went. Occasionally the game will omit the proper impact sounds.

X-Men: Next Dimension is a solid fighter that makes the grade with a variety of moves and interactive level design. Fans of the X-Men series will learn to overlook the occasional camera and sound problems.

Progress is saved to a Memory Card (not included) and requires one free block.
