Hooked Gamers (8.5 out of 10)

Even though Kingdom can be very frustrating at times - especially in the beginning when you have no clue what to do or what to expect - it’s also one of those “sucks, I died AGAIN. Let’s just try ONE more time!” games. Each time you play, you gain new insights and eventually you stick to a strategy that seems to work and realize just how much fun this game brings on top of that frustration. I couldn’t get enough of watching the different night skies go by. Not one night was the same. Cloudy, rain, full moons, it’s all there and all looking gorgeous. Shadows, different types of weather during the day, the reflexion in the water – it’s just so well done. Add the soundtrack to the mix, which sets just the right atmosphere, and you end up with the little masterpiece that is Kingdom.

The Escapist ( )

Kingdom is a good tough game as the setup of it says that "it's your fault if you lose". There's no unnecessary unbeatable enemies. The concept of protecting your kingdom is as satisfying as the challenge to do so. Learning how the A.I. operates is half the fun of it. The detailed pixel graphics and dynamic visual elements came off as outstanding. My only wish was that there was more variety in this formula. The developers calculated their gameplay decisions to provide a hard feat. I think adding more variables into the game wouldn't be impossible. But it's easy to get swept away in Kingdom. The game developers executed a deadlock between man vs. monster in a way that I could lose many intense hours in it.

Ultimately Kingdom is a game that’s easy to love. Combining exploration, micromanagement and strategy in a way that continually feels personal and intimate is no easy task, but it achieves it by forcing you to do everything yourself. While simplicity is the key to the game’s mechanics, keeping everything on a very human scale is probably at the core of how it makes you feel. Very few strategy or management games manage to present things on a street level scale, but Kingdom does it perfectly and it’s all the better for it.

The Koalition (78 out of 100)

Kingdom is a very simple game at its core. Its gameplay can be incredibly frustrating at times, but still has an element of addictiveness that will hook you. The randomness can be a bit unfair if you’ve spent hours playing through a single game, mostly due to a few bugs or design flaws. If you stick through all of the bad however, Kingdom will give you many hours of gameplay. Within those hours, you will experience all of the good and bad emotions that come with being a ruler. It might not be for everybody, but Kingdom still has something good to offer.

IGN (7.7 out of 10)

The first hours of Kingdom are a gorgeous and addictive test of city management. With elegant simplicity and an eye for charming detail, it got its hooks into me early on, and I embraced the challenge of unraveling the mystery of how its systems worked. However, just a few hours later I had grown tired of long, dull gallops across a vast kingdom, and developed an ironclad strategy that rendered the opposition all but moot. Kingdom is a flash in the pan, but that flash is bright and beautiful while it lasts.

Kingdom is home to a beautiful, mysterious world I desperately want to explore. There were thrilling moments where a massive army of monsters were throwing themselves against my last defenses and I barely managed to make it to morning—it just takes too long between failures to reach the point where I find opportunity to grow. The moment to moment gameplay is pleasurable in the same way that dragging a rake through a zen garden can be, except the Zen Garden Inspector rolls around later on, kicks dust into your eyes, and tells you to start over without explaining why. There’s tons of fun to be had in Kingdom, but the fun ends where your patience does.

When all the arcane is teased out and the seams obvious, not even the beautiful score and gorgeous pixel reflection in the river can encourage me to execute the precise, efficient moves that would lead me to victory. But while I wasn't so interested in mechanically performing the "correct" blueprint of success after I figured it out, the journey towards acquiring that knowledge was still worthwhile.

GameOn (7 out of 10)

All in all, the mechanics of the game are a very clever twist to the build-your-base systems. The economy is also a very smart simplification of resource-management, and it overall coheres into this tight and enclosed experience that feels challenging, with some disappointing aspects nevertheless. In these roguelikes, there’s a compulsory requirement for variety and replayability, and Kingdom fails to deliver in this regard. Kingdom won’t last long in your hard drive given the great array of much richer experiences out in the roguelike Steam catalogue, but the interesting gameplay concepts that it brings to the table makes it a remarkable exploration of roguelike mechanics.

VentureBeat / Gamesbeat (67 out of 100)

Kingdom has solid ideas that get lost in its own simplicity. It’s a little too conceptual, and I found that it had a hard time holding my attention after a few in-game days. It has a whole kingdom out there to explore, but it just isn’t varied or interesting enough to warrant the type of commitment it ask of the player.

Jeuxvideo.com (13 out of 20)

GameOver (Greece) (6.5 out of 10)
