The Game Hoard (7 out of 7)

While its glitches aren’t well hidden, TimeSplitters 2 still manages to provide a phenomenal first-person shooting experience because of how well everything still works both in design concept and the pace of play. Firefights are exciting battles as the weapons provide a good range of options in levels that suit them well, but Mapmaker allows you to expand that synergy even further to expand the lifetime of an entertaining multiplayer component. The main story and the numerous extra single player missions give you much more to do, their unlockables making them worth doing on top of them providing tests not only of accuracy but of puzzle solving and strategic development. Excellent music adds to a mix of ideas that manage to make multiple ideas throughout different time periods somehow gel together solidly when occupying the same space, a good balance of unbridled creativity and playing into the expected ideas of each era making for a first person shooter packed with interesting content.

The most noticeable improvement in this sequel is a vastly better story mode. But story mode isn't really the point: death-match mode is where the action is. New guns, new characters, better animation, and network play make this the best arcade-style first-person-shooter game available on consoles. Environments are enormous, and enemies are plentiful. Adding to the fun, you can use the enhanced MapMaker to create new levels. One minor gripe: Player statistics are no longer tracked and presented.

Finally, an FPS game that has a fun and effective two-player cooperative mode in the story, and a multiplayer mode that is the tops of anything on the market for console games, TS2 is the pinnacle for which FPS’s of the future will try to attain. Enough reading. If you don’t have TS2, get it. If you already own it, shouldn’t you be trying to get that next character unlocked?

This game is great. It is the game all you FPS fans have been waiting for, it is a whole new level in FPS gaming and I think everyone should get it. It is better than both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, and even better than Halo. With the astounding amount of things to unlock, the amazing multiplayer, and the Map Maker this game will keep you coming back. There is almost nothing bad to say about this game except for the fact that there really isn’t anything new and amazing in TS2, but if the formula works, why change it? Also, the story is pretty lame, but who cares when it is still fun.

Without question, this is the best FPS available on the PS2 and something everyone should have in their collection. Between the Story, Multiplayer, Arcade modes and all of the unlockables, this game will keep gamers busy for at least a year or ten. There's enough in this game to like that even non-FPS fans will be able to find something they like.

Praise for this title is just so easy to give; the game is basically synonymous with the word brilliant. With a multiplayer mode that's seemingly immaculate (easily rivals Goldeneye and Halo's), a single player mode that's well above average, and a control set-up that anyone can operate effortlessly, the game practically encounters no downward spirals. The few flaws the game does have are so minuscule that they're basically not even detrimental to the overall product. One of the finest, solidly-crafted games in years -- there's no question.

It’s a shame this game came out when it did. If Free Radical had managed to hold out another month or two they could have taken advantage of the recently added online components of all the next-gen systems. I can’t imagine playing TimeSplitters 2 online; well yes I can, and it sends shivers down my spine. We can only hope for online support in TimeSplitters 3 or whatever Free Radical has up their sleeve for their next big release.

66 Says: It's funny when you think about it. Sure Time Splitters 2 has received some great media coverage, but the upcoming Metroid Prime has stolen the show. Just like the thousands of others in the country who have gotten their hands on Metroid play-testing, I personally have to admit that from what I've seen so far TS2 is probably the best FPS of the year. Even the bloated Unreal Tournament 2003 (which I loved) couldn't fully compare to TS2.

I was one of the lucky owners of a PS2 on the launch date of the system, and would have sold the darned thing due to a disappointing game lineup had it not been for the original Timesplitters title from Free Radical and Eidos. This game showed owners of the PS2 what the system could be capable of, and did a great job on lighting, gameplay, and overall enjoyment. Us gamers talked about what improvements could have been made
 they listened
and the result is one of, if not the best FPS title that I have played so far for any console system.

The original game had several strengths including the novel map creator and refreshing character design and thankfully these both return in force in the sequel. Whereas the original could only create multiplayer maps now you can set up Story levels and even have the option to set up guards patrol routes. The AI is similarly improved, whereas before all enemies took a gung-ho approach this time they will be more varied. Some will attack without hesitation while others will use cover or stealth to gun you down. In a genre of bland and uninspiring characters, Timesplitters refreshingly introduced cheerleaders, doctors, aliens and Elvis into a stagnant world of mutants, cyborgs and military personnel. This time expect to control cowboys, sheriffs, monkeys, rock men and robots with the Japanese schoolgirl attracting the most attention. Timesplitters 2 will have that and more. This is definitely a must buy for shooter fans. I play it just to see a monkeys with a high powered Assault Rifle’s.

In the beginning, there was Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64, which single-handedly proved that first person shooters could be enjoyable on a console system. Next came TimeSplitters, which was a rushed product, but it still managed to become one of the best PlayStation 2 multiplayer games ever created. Fast forward to 2002 where Free Radical Design (formed by several key members from Rare's Goldeneye and Perfect Dark teams) has kept the tradition alive with the release of TimeSplitters 2.

Timesplitters 2 has delivered, and in more ways than one. The team behind it have obviously thought long and hard about every facet of the game and haven't stopped for tea until they've tweaked it to near perfection. The single-player, the deathmatches, the extra modes, the challenges and the Mapmaker all combine to create a game so comprehensive that it grabs you by the lapels and screams "buy me!" in your face. It's rare that any one game can offer so many hours of entertainment on the one disc - and it's for this overarching reason that you can't afford to miss it. Outstanding.

Overall, TimeSplitters 2 is all that and a bag of chips. The multiplayer modes are fast, frantic and sorely addictive. Free Radical has created a worthy successor to GoldenEye that is varied and ultimately, fun. However, what it comes down to is that the game doesn’t make enough leaps in bounds in single-player to really put it in stardom. Nevertheless, you owe it to yourself (as well as your mom) to pick this game up. There’s a reason why I’ve been playing this more than Metroid Prime. Wholeheartedly recommended.

Point. Aim. Shoot. The concept behind 3D first-person shooters seems simple enough, but it's the execution (pardon the pun), that makes all the difference. UK-based development giant Rare got it right when it released GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64 in late 1997, a shooter that borrowed and polished elements from FPSs on PCs and added enough new ideas to the mix to make the experience a worthwhile one. Since that time, Rare's Bond shooter has remained something of a console FPS benchmark -- still one of the best available, and constantly challenged by newcomers to the market.

The game's single-player mode is marked by what I think is a weak attempt to bring a story to a series of unconnected levels. It also lacks innovation. There is nothing present in any of the levels that hasn't been done before in other first-person shooters. Indeed, some of the single-player stages in the game even come off as a tad shallow at points. But regardless of all these minor complaints, everything is forgiven, for what TimeSplitters 2 does correctly -- and there is a lot -- it does so with a level of polish and perfection that few competitors can match. From the unparalleled sense of speed and unmatched control accuracy and comfort to the amazing cooperative mode, unbelievably deep and brilliant multiplayer modes, sheer options, and MapMaker feature, there is some much to love about this game that it's hard to list it all.

Throughout all of gaming history, there’s been those certain titles that change the way we think about games and gaming in general. The ones that rip through every standard boundary we ever came to know, and make us reconsider what exactly is “great.” From next-gen gaming, there’s titles such as Goldeneye 007 the game that revolutionized console first-person shooters in practically every way possible. On PC there’s the legendary Half-Life, a game that was light-years ahead of its time when it comes to integrating story with gameplay–never before had gamers experienced such a blatantly amazing product.

Although it's impossible to live up to the mythology created around a certain Nintendo 64 first-person shooter based on the James Bond license, Free Radical has the unenviable job of having to do just that. Split like rogue atoms from the cluster center of Rare in 1999, Free Radical burst onto the gaming scene in 2000 with a built-in heritage in console first-person shooters and a company name, though strangely different, to live up to.

In an age when the likes of BioShock, Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 rule the FPS genre there may not be much room for droll titles like TimeSplitters 2, but it still manages to feel unique and pertinent; an uplifting change to most of the market. The single-player is still not perfect and the lack of any online modes feels somewhat antiquated, but for a fast-paced, light-hearted and surprisingly cavernous First-Person Shooter, they don’t come any better than this.

Unique in presentation, fluid in controls and exceptional in multiplayer, Timesplitters 2 is a superior sequel in almost every way. Playing against others was fun before, but the single-player modes were atrocious. That problem solved with some cheeky storytelling and some very well designed levels, the sequel is a complete game rather than just a multiplayer vehicle. Owners of a Multitap will get the most mileage from this release, but co-op play and solid solo challenges against bots will add even more value. Well worth the investment, Timesplitters 2 has lived up to the series’ potential.

The most flattering endorsement I can give the game is that you'll be playing it long after the holidays, and perhaps even next year's festive occasions have come and gone. While beating single-player scenarios isn't such a chore, anyone who can take advantage of the multiplayer functions needn't fear a thing in the world. TimeSplitters 2 may very well be the best split-screen multiplayer-focused first-person shooter ever created. Back when console technology wasn't quite powerful enough to allow you to play first-person shooters as they were meant to be played, such games used to get a very bad rap on those platforms. Older systems simply didn't have the muscle to make shooters look like they were supposed to, and the lack of online support for consoles meant that players were stuck playing multiplayer matches on a split screen.

TS2 is not going to hold the powerful memory of games like Zelda, Metroid or Half-Life because it never takes itself too seriously. I think it is best described as a brilliant advertisement for what these folks are capable of handling in the future. I feel that we’re going to see much more from this team and that hopefully someone will write them an amazing story that takes advantage of all the brilliant but scattered elements they were able to bring to this production. But by no means would I encourage you to hold back and wait for the next effort. In fact, the only criticism I will hold against Free Radical now, something that was a serious game-foul on their part, was the lack of a jump. Feel blessed, Free Radical.

This is one of the best console FPS titles available, it stands up to our friend Halo, but on its own terms, taking the best of Goldeneye's stealthy single player action and Quake 3's fast and furious style multiplayer gaming. And thanks to the arcade and challenge modes there is a huge replay value that will keep you returning to this title time and again.

The Video Game Critic (B)

TS2's music is exceptional and appropriate for each stage, including a jazzy score for 1932 Chicago, religious hymns in Notre Dame, and electronic music for Planet X. It took a while for me to fully appreciate this one, but Time Splitters 2 is a well-constructed shooter that's both goofy and fun. Some may find it shallow, but never underestimate the all-important monkey factor.

Grace à son gameplay soigné, Timesplitters ravira surtout les fans de FPS multijoueurs sur console. Finally, Timesplitters 2 brings back the cool map editing mode from the first game. While there have been a few improvements made to the map editor (such as the ability to create 'story' maps complete with objectives, enemies, and event triggers), the weaknesses that hampered the original map mode have been carried over.

The Good
This is one of my best ever game's,it is highly addictive with fast gameplay and grathic's.It has also got an insane amount of charecter's.Over 100 to choose!.The story fit's in well with the game's greatest aspect:action. Most of the time you will be surrounded by guard's that you will meet along the way on your quest for the Time crystal's.The game has a really good challenge mode built into it,completing these challange's will reward you with extra character's and cheat's.Then there is the arcade mode,14 different game type's.Also there is the Mapmaker, this let's you create your own level's to play.

The Bad
Sometime's the difficulty of the game get's in the way of it a little. Also the challange's are really hard to finish.

The Bottom Line
Buy this game when you see it!,you wont regret it.

My favorite game for PS2!!!
by DudeOfMonson (117)

The Good
Just when I thought the 1st Timesplitters was my favorite game, along comes Timesplitters 2. More heavy guns and a lot of awesome arenas. The story mode in this game was awesome. I loved the plot it was awesome. There was a lot of intense moments and even a couple of brain scrambling puzzles. The multi-player was just as good as the last Timesplitters game in fact better.

The Bad
This game was so much fun the only thing I didn't like was the fact that once you dominate the story and deathmatch it can be be boring without some good competition. So make sure you get your friends involved and really crank up the competition.

The Bottom Line
The best FPS on PS2 guaranteed to delivery much fun.

_The_ Best Console FPS I`ve ever played.
by somaen (11)

The Good
TimeSplitters 2 has lots of game modes so you won`t get tired of it like you get of other FPS games. You can make your own maps and pick bots/weapons your self. The game also gives you a lot of totally different maps to play on. The story mode can be played solo/co-op.

Another thing that made me like TimeSplitters 2 is the fact that its actually easy to use the PS2 hand controller with it, myself I havent played to many console games, and it often takes some time for me to get used to controls on any console. But with TimeSplitters 2 i got used to the controls in a matter of hours.

The Bad
I can`t find anything really bad about this game, its just really good.

The Bottom Line
TimeSplitters 2 is a usual "fire at everything you see" FPS, a little bit like Quake 3. The story continues from the original TimeSplitters, but the best bit of the game is the Multiplayer part, here you can find hours and hours of fun. With its many game modes it will take some time before you put this game on the shelf to collect dust.

One of the greatest multiplayer games ever created
by Kirk Carson (1)

The Good
This game has lots apon lots of multiplayer options to use and they never get old. Everything about the mutliplaye is really fun. the single player game was o.k though

The Bad
This game does not support online gameplay for the Gamecube unfortionatly and the single player game or co-op mode is not the greatest and is very easy to beat.

The Bottom Line
This game is a must have for people who enjoy multiplayer games and playing games with other people. I don't recommend this game to hard-core solo players because the one player mode is no the greatest thing.

More fun than a monkey with a flamethrower
by Anime school girl (2)

The Good
What wasn't there to like? First you had the story, which flung you into different timezones in some great environments, allowing you utilize some of the most entertaining and explosive weapons ever devised. And let's not forget the some of the best use of bots in multiplayer, providing hours of fun with friends. Speaking of friends, the story allowed for some fantastic CO-OP play. And then there were the challenges. My god, there are too many great things in this game to mention. Oh, it also had awesome zombies. Like, really awesome.

The Bad
There isn't much to hate, but the A.I is not much more than cannon fodder with feelings.

The Bottom Line
A game that if you haven't played, are missing out. Be ashamed!

One of the best games from my childhood (even though it traumatized me)
by Asinine (1003)

The Good
Because the story is about time travel the decides to go nuts with the concepts and introduce ten levels each with zero connectivity. You go from 1930's Chicago to 18th century France and then to space for example. I actually really like this because it offers a lot of variety which helps keeping the game interesting, plus it also adds to the humor and silliness of the game. If I do have to complaint, it would be that the sci-fi setting returns more often then I would like and they never come with different weapons like the other levels, but that it nitpicking.

The game has a lot of humor, but it's a really weird kind of humor that is very hard to explain. It's incredibly silly, often it parodies stuff and sometimes it's acting all serious just to weird you out. In the earlier mentioned France setting you have to take down a satanist who is holding out in the Notre Dame, the cut-scene starts and you see him yelling about angels and preparing a woman for sacrificing, when all of a sudden the player characters sneaks into the building wearing a brightly-colored clown suit. I would also explain why it's silly, but I think the Gingerbread cookies you can play as and those monkeys speak for themselves.

Let me clarify the "traumatized" part that I mentioned in the summary. When I first played this game I was ten or something and my dad got it for me because it looked like a really funny game without any realistic violence. At the time I wasn't really used to violent video games, I didn't care all that much about them, but I was also very easily scared. The fact that I was a bit of a wuss was really troublesome when navigating through dark dungeons with zombies and aliens on your tail. Now, roughly seven years later, I am shaking while playing this game, constantly fearing something will jump at me or suddenly spawn into the game. I have played some of the scariest games out there, I have watched some horrifying movies and I am a big fan of the H.P. Lovecraft books, but it is this game that finally has me sleeping with the lights on.

That was a bit of a personal story that I really wanted to share, but something everybody has to agree upon is that this game has a wonderful multi player. Not only is there a co-op mode that allows a second player to join in on the story mode, there is also four-player mode with dozens of game modes, maps, options to change as well as almost all the items and weapons in the entire game and a whole library full off characters to choose from after unlocking them. Every fight is a guaranteed chaos with a decent enough AI to back-up or fight against the real players.

The player can also customize which weapons he wants to spawn and save these to sets, he can do the same to the enemies that will join in and last but not least: there is a mode in which you can make your own map. This "make your own map" mode in insanely detailed and a million times better than the forge mode from Halo 3, you can place hundreds of items, spawn thousands of props and make every tiny bit count. It's very easy to make a very good map that allows for challenging and fair battles, which is great because they often make for the best maps to play Deathmatch in.

Turning up the difficulty in the story mode does not only make the enemies stronger, but it also adds more objective and options to all the missions. For example: In the Siberia map there is a big dam that my cousin and I were always admiring, trying to figure out why anybody would go through the trouble of making that dam if it was off-limits, see on the easy setting this dam has no purpose, you just destroy the files and satellites before going into the base and destroying the alien machinery. However, if you play it on normal difficulty you suddenly also need to restore power to the base which allows you to take the lift up to the dam and use the turrets there to fight off an enemy wave and an army helicopter.

The auto-aim is pretty nice and makes this game much for enjoyable for everyone. It reminded me about Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64 which I liked a whole lot better than Turok because the controls were not really top-notch, so in Goldeneye you could rely on your auto-aim to shoot the enemies instead of taking a magazine to the chest before finally getting your gun to aim straight at the enemies (like in Turok). Here you just need to look at the enemies and the gun will do the rest, this also doesn't make the game too easy and it can still get very difficult when lots of enemies show-up with snipers and machine guns.

The Bad
The biggest problem in this game's story mode is a glitch that can be triggered very easily, at the end of most levels you will have to complete your final objective in order to make the exit appear, but that exit doesn't appear if you haven't completed all the main objectives yet. What also appears alongside the exit are constantly spawning enemies that do lots of damage and take quite a few bullets, so that means you will have to go back and try to complete the objective while those bastards are on your heels. It can also be very difficult to know you are missing something because sometimes a certain objective is in the same room as the boss, so you might assume the missing piece is there only to find out that it's not.

The game is graphically lacking, the animation is pretty nice and I liked the aesthetic, but when you look at the water it's just a still picture that never moves, you may also notice that sometimes there are problems with the cut-scenes (clothes that look like they are made of carton and characters floating a few milometers above the ground). One graphical problem that also troubles the gameplay is the blur you get when you turn around sometimes, it makes everything hard to see and can end with you making a 360 degrees turn when you intended to look at an enemy shooting in your back.

The maps aren't really linear, but they aren't really open either, it's somewhere in between which leaves fans of linear maps (like me) with uneasy feeling and not been sure in what direction to go first while fans of open maps will feel like they are trapped in a monkey cage, big and with a lot of paths to go, but ultimately still locked in and limited. It doesn't really please anybody and quite often the secondary objective are all placed on the easiest path anyway, so there is just no purpose to check the dozens of copy & pasted empty rooms.

One level takes the cake for annoying me and that is Neo-Tokyo, where you have to follow a hacker into her hide-out. This is the only mission where you are inspected to sneak and in multi-player it is practically impossible. It's also very easy to fail if you don't go through a certain door fast enough (it will close quickly after the hacker goes through) and on the higher difficulties there are police cars and more cameras to bother you. This is the only map the I dread to play every time I put this game in my Nintendo Wii.

The Bottom Line
Timesplitters 2 is possibly the best console FPS of it's generation and that is for a pretty damn good reason. It has no realism whatsoever, it's funny,it works pretty damn well and it has one of the best multi-player modes and customization options I have ever seen in a video game. Sure it's graphically a bit lacking and there is one level that takes the piss (as well as one glitch), but that is hardly a reason to avoid this game.

If you have any of the three consoles from the previous generation lying around or your current system is capable of running this game (backwards comparability), then I highly recommend this game to all fans of FPS games because this is truly a gem in the genre.

Amazing first-person shooter game; love it!
by Austin Bruner (4)

The Good
You can play as over 100 different characters in multiplayer, and there are several maps and modes to choose from. The graphics are outstanding for its time, even if the animation is a little bit too cartoon-like. There are tons of guns, from the past, present, and future. The single-player campaign can be played alone or with a friend, and each level takes place in a different time period. You get different weapons in each level, and the tasks are never easy to accomplish. You can play the campaign on Easy, Normal, or Hard difficulty, giving it extra replay value. There is also an Arcade League, in which you play these arcade-style challenges. You can play through the league to unlock new maps and characters in multiplayer, which is another fun part about the game. There is also a Challenge Mode, which is like Arcade Mode, except different. I can't go into detail about that one, though. The sound is extremely well done, and the music is incredible.

The Bad
I like a lot about this game, but I have to say that the campaign is a little too short and the story isn't easy to follow. Also, the weapons appear to be floating in midair; it doesn't look like a hand is holding them. But, other than that, it is a very, very, very good game.

The Bottom Line
Every FPS fan would be doing themselves a favor by picking up this game. It is good for all three sixth-generation systems. With so much to do, and so much fun, no gamer can go wrong with this game.

Timesplitters 2: Needs more salt...
by laemus (12)

The Good
"Wow", I thought, upon booting it up and getting the singleplayer Story mode going. "True sequel to Goldeneye", my mind screamed.

That first level. It's a beauty. Well positioned enemies, good objectives. ZOMBIES. It all felt wonderful.

The Bad
Oh, christ, what happened? It's as though they poured everything, and I mean EVERYTHING they had to give into that first level. Everything afterwards feels oddly shallow, even for a standard FPS game.

Oh, and the aiming system isn't too great, but it's forgivable.

The Bottom Line
A rip-roaring crazy work of monkey-catching magic in multi-player. Don't buy it for single-player expecting some deep, great story. It's no Halo in one-player.
