Overall, there is a reason that Tony Hawkâs Pro Skater 4 is one of the most anticipated games of the season. Itâs a vast improvement over its predecessors, and thereâs enough play value to get considerably more than your moneyâs worth, especially if you try to complete all 190 goals in the game. While beginners might want to cut their teeth on some of the earlier games before trying this installment, veterans should have already been at the store before even reading this far. Itâs that good. If Activision can continue to improve on the series in every installment as well as this game has, then the Tony Hawk franchise should be alive and well for years and years to come.

Excellent as always, the game repeats the ways of the past in which sound really does make the game. Audio effects strewn through the background are dead on every time. Listening to the scrapes of the rolling wheels of your board over pavement and screeches over the grinding of a railing has never sounded more lifelike. It's undeniably unreal in how far the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater has gotten, with now an entire wealth of character voices to add to every individual the engine pushes out (including the Create-A-Skaters themselves).

While this game is very excellent, I don't believe any game can be perfect. My only, albeit, small gripe is the lack of stuff you can use to customize your created skater. And no online support. Anyway, this game if very fun, and well worth the 50 dollars that will be spent on it. Even if this game was 70 dollars, I would still buy it because it is extremely fun. The combination of excellent graphics, high-quality sounds, vast gameplay, and very high replay value make this a very fun game worth the time, effort, and money. And with stages that rival Grand Theft Auto 3. You have nothing to loose. Now, will you please excuse me? I have some grinding to do.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 is one of the best titles available on the GameCube. Its depth and addictiveness is second to none. If the GameCube is your only console, then I wholeheartedly recommend this game. The Xbox's LAN capabilities and the PS2's Internet options give those versions more value. And the GCN controller is a poor substitute for a Dual Shock 2. While these are certainly notable detractions, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for the GameCube remains a topnotch title.

Basically, what weâve got here is a Tony Hawk game that refines and polishes nearly every conceivable aspect of the franchise and then goes the extra mile. Some of the stuff youâll run across in this game, especially the mini-games, are downright surprising with their off-kilter approach and sometimes hilarious payload. The possibility of pulling off that impossible score is one step closer thanks to the new spine-transfer move and while a bit more innovation might have enhanced this already stellar production, I am hardly inclined to complain. As is always the case with a new Tony Hawk game: get it, it rocks like you wonât believe and you will not be disappointed.

While for the most part the tried and true Tony Hawk gameplay is still intact, this latest release in the series gives it a breathe of freshness. Both the casual and hardcore gamer will enjoy its fun and addictive nature. While the Spine Transfer and Skitch move may not change the gameplay drastically, they offer welcome additions to any players Combo routines. Tony Hawk is a game that defined a whole genre, and anyone who plays this game can easily understand why.

THPS4âs gameplay is essentially the same solid controls and moves as THPS3âs with the addition of the spine transfer which allows the player to transfer over a ââspineââ (two quarter-pipe ramps placed back to back) by pressing R2 when launching off of one side of the spine. Another addition is ââSkitchinââ cars by grabbing a carâs back bumper so it can pull you forward. (Like what Marty McFly does in the Back to the Future movies.) The game also includes some new moves and specials as well. If youâve been playing this series since its inception you should be very familiar with its controls. However, this means that if you have never played any of the earlier THPS games you will face a bit of a learning curve.

While fans of the previous games will find the redesigned career mode a little foreign at first, it definitely makes for a longer game with a lot less repetition than you saw in previous installments, which asked you to play the game over and over again with each skater to unlock their secrets. The deeper single-player and improved multiplayer modes makes Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 the most tightly-packed installment in the series to date, and the slightly refined gameplay is still unmatched in the GameCube's action sports arena. In short, anyone with even a remote interest in either the genre or the real-life sport should purchase this game as soon as possible.

Activision's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series has thrust extreme sports into popular culture since its inception in 1999. What began as an idea for a skateboarding game has become the de facto standard for all extreme sports titles to live up to. Many might say that just as Madden is to football, so is Tony Hawk's Pro Skater to extreme sports. It accomplished this so quickly because it defined what gaming addiction is all about. The formula of including the best pro skaters, most extensive trick list, a never-ending combo system, and brilliant level design keeps gamers coming back with frothing mouths.

Though THPS4 may not be the best introduction to the series due to its steep learning curve, it makes an excellent follow-up for the legions of THPS fans already out there. Unless youâve had enough Tony Hawk, you should pick this one up immediately. If youâre new to the series, the game is highly recommended, but be prepared to spend significant time learning the ropes.

All in all this is a fine addition to the THPS lineage, although it does ramp up the difficulty quite considerably on the previous incarnations. This really shouldn't be seen as a bad thing however as you will get more enjoyment and lifespan out of this title than ever before.

It seems as if the man himself has been in on each stage of production and the general feel of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 is significantly more satisfying than I've seen before. This is about as good as it gets, so go grab some "big air" and ollie down to you local vendor for a copy.

This game will be played over and over by you and your friends. The game is difficult to beat entirely and will keep you coming back for more. But once Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 is released, nobody will be playing the lonely Tony 4. Enjoy this game before it becomes out of date with the newer version.

Ok, as mentioned above, there is blood, as well as some objectionable songs on the soundtrack. There is also a little bit of bad language, none of which involve the Lord?s Name in vain, which is definitely a plus. The content descriptors say that there are suggestive themes, but there are none that I can see. The game is pretty clean in that respect, but not as clean as Mat Hoffman?s Pro BMX 2, but this is the far better game. Check it out.

I've put plenty of hours into THPS4 and have decided that if you have never played any of the games in the series, I urge you to pick this one up straight away. If you don't think skating is for you, give it a hire anyway. Veterans of the series on the other hand, will be able to make a solid choice for themselves - you know what to expect from the game. Overall, THPS4 passed my enjoyment meter, though the series is getting old after the fourth instalment. They should leave on a good note and try something new.

The recipe is successfull and holds the essence of the Tony Hawk titles - but THPS4 could have offered a more. Perhaps. Maybe. We can always wish. What I left totally unmentioned were the extra-features of the game, and I should probably give you a short conclusion of them. Create-A-Skater is a feature which gives you the ability to create your own personal skater with your name, country, hometown and birth-year. You can set the appearance of the skater to your liking, this including clothing. Nothing earth-shattering, but quite fun nonetheless. The other feature is Create-a-Park -editor where you can build your own park from scratch. Being quite limited, yet free enough, it is a nice little addition although leaves room for improvements. The real Tony Hawk revolutionarized the ramp-world and attempted bold, never-before-seen tricks such as "the 900" - so why don't you, Neversoft, follow his footsteps and go beyond your previous success?

Activision and Neversoft have found a cash cow in the Tony Hawks series of games, ever since skateboarding was deemed to be hip and cool once more. This success has enabled the expansion into several other "extreme" sports genres with licensed names such as Matt Hoffman and Kelly Slater. With the release of the fourth game in the potentially never-ending series, have Neversoft come up with something different and exciting, or are they merely milking the cow this time around?

If you enjoyed the previous Tony Hawk games, you will probably like this one too. It still has the same core gameplay mechanics, but with some very good improvements. Of course I also recommend it to people who haven't tried the series before, the easy-to-learn and rewarding gameplay should appeal to pretty much everyone who likes platform or action-sport games.

I enjoyed and still am enjoying this game. The revamped career mode is most welcomed and everything else is much the same as previous instalments. It is definitely time to hang up the skateboard though. Donât wreck a great series by shoving another one down our throats.

Ultimately, then, Neversoft has presented us with their latest package and the receiving is bittersweet. There's a new design scheme. It's sweet because it's different, bitter because it takes away a lot of what made the franchise cool. And so it is with the whole game. The new is cool, but then you realize that what we had wasn't so bad in the first place. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 marks a bend in the road. We've gone down it and there's really no going back to what we had before. As such bends go, this one isn't really terrible. The game is still very playable and it will likely keep you busy for nearly as long as its immediate predecessor. How much more or less time you spend with it is really up to personal preference. Whatever you expect, though, don't think this one is more of the same. It is to a certain extent, but not so much as it isn't.

Still a great game, but not as accessible as previous outings.

The Good
There's a lot to like about the Birdman's fourth game. First, of all the time limits for each level have dissappeared. Instead, you can take as long as you like to wander around in the huge levels, and you don't have to re-load the whole level every time you want to try to complete a single goal. Second, the variety and creativity of the different goals is fantastic. They're not all just about collecting junk or getting crazy high scores. In fact, some of them don't even involve skating. Like all of the Tony Hawk games, there is a seriously huge amout of game play here. It would take a really long time to complete every goal and unlock everything.
The soundtrack is great too. Activision did their homework in the band selection. The tracks aren't just pulled from Top 40 radio stations. Instead, they simply sound like good skating music.
Basically, everything that was good about the previous games is still good here. The basic skating gameplay is still as good as it gets for a skating game.
The Bad
While you would think that removing the time limits would make the game easier, Neversoft has, in my opinion, overcompensated for this by making some of the goals nearly impossible. It took me many, many tries to complete some of the goals. It's fun for a while, but it gets old pretty quick when you're trying to pull the same stunt over and over again. I suppose if you're a hard core fan of the series, you expect a serious challenge from this 3rd sequel. But, the increased difficulty makes the game less accessible to the gamer who's only casually interested in the sport.
Graphically, Tony Hawk 4 has fallen a little behind the standard set by the previous games. Sure, the environments are bigger and somewhat more detailed, but they still look blank and sterile. I think better lighting would go a long way towards making the game look more realistic. The GameCube version seems to suffer from some frame rate problems when there are a lot of complex objects on the screen. I don't know if the other platforms have this issue, but it indicates a lack of polish on this version of the game. THPS 1 looked amazing for it's time, THPS4 looks merely average.
The Bottom Line
Activision and Neversoft have done an admirable job of providing something new and worthwhile for Tony Hawk fans year after year. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 is a good game for most players, and a great game for fans of the series.

by Exodia85 (2163)
The Good
The graphics were crisp and clear made a great from the start. The different selection of music and the sound was on target. But, probably the best thing is the ability to grind cars!
The Bad
The only thing I could find wrong is the challenges were too hard.
The Bottom Line
Tony Hawk is the man and so are his games so get out there and buy it.
