The graphics are excellent throughout, with some of the best backdrops and sprites ever seen in this type of game. I've got through about 30% of the game, and for each area the graphics just keep on improving! The sound is excellent as well. The renowned Tim Follin comes up trumps yet again with some brilliant atmospheric scores - probably some of the best music yet heard on the NES. The gameplay is excellent, with some brain-bending puzzles and nice power-ups for Shadox's abilities. For the Nintendo, this is a very original and compelling game that'll have you super-glued to your console.

Apart from the lack of a save game this is brill. The graphics are unbelievable, the challenge is huge and the gameplay totally riveting!

Rare brought the world some excellent visuals in a semi-3D format, tricking gamers by setting the viewpoint in a top-down, isometric stance that gave an impressive feel to what was really just a 2D game dressed-up. Fellow Brits, Software Creations, took this idea and built upon it for Solstice, creating intricate worlds full of crazy creatures, terrible traps and a plethora of hidden paths. This stands out definitely as one of the more technically pleasing NES games on the market and really shows what could be achieved on the humble 8-bit platform.

In the end, it comes down to this: If you want a challenge of gigantic proportion, then waste no more time and go find this game. But if you do not enjoy games as difficult as this then please heed my advice and DO NOT play this game. If you do, it might result in you hurting yourself, others, or worst of all, an innocent video game...

I've always been a big fan of isometric 3D games, and am pleased to see this style of game on a console. Solstice is very much in the classic Knightlore mould, and transporting items from one location to another and avoiding traps and baddies is what it's all about. Swift reflexes are required in many situations, and you've also got to get your old grey matter into gear if you are to solve all the puzzles - some of them are very devious! With over 250 screens, great graphics and some of the best music and sound effects I've heard in a Nintendo game, this is a must for arcade adventure fiends looking for a long-lasting challenge!

Solstice is beautifully drawn and thought out, with multiple levels to explore, hidden rooms and staircases and much more.

While Solstice gives you five or six lives to gamble with, you have to discover continues and extra lives throughout the rooms if you want to take down the game in one playthrough (and youâll have to eventually, as thereâs no save feature â bâoh!). Solstice doles out pleasure and pain in equal measures, which is to say, itâs the best dungeon crawler on the NES.

Strangely, isometric games aren't that prominent on the NES, so Solstice is quite refreshing. Sadly, though, because of the large number of rooms, there is little space in the cart to include loads of puzzles. The problems are also a bit too easy to solve, which reduces its longterm appeal. Still, anything the reminds you of the old

This game is both challenging and engaging, with a honeycomb of rooms to explore, a perspective that makes gauging spatial relationships tricky, and stringent demands for quick thinking and acting.
