Those looking for vast mechanical or design improvements in the series won't find them here. The map is relatively small, considering the size of America, but the tradeoff is worth it: the scenery is fresh, accurate, and varied, while cities feel much more realistic. With two trucks and two included states, and another one on its way, American Truck Simulator is an investment into the series' future, but it's not a steep one and easily earns its value with what is already presented.

Hooked Gamers (8.4 out of 10) (84%)

Playing American Truck Simulator is really like taking on an extra job, although it never feels that way. The progress you make is slow, but that makes it all the more rewarding when you save up enough money for those nice new tyres you wanted. It might be worth waiting for some more areas to be added, but if you�ve ever dreamt of a great American road trip, American Truck Simulator is just about as good as it gets without doing the real thing.

Ultimately, I left American Truck Simulator thankful that it was more of the same. Hop in a truck, drive where I'm told to drive and see some sights whiz past. As someone who sunk countless hours into Euro Truck Simulator 2, a fresh coat of paint, an unfamiliar set of sights and the challenge of driving on the wrong opposite side of the road left me confident that I'll be sinking just as many hours into American Truck Simulator. It's not all of America right now, but it's an exciting start.

While a little more realism would make American Truck Simulator more fun, paradoxical as that may sound, there’s no escaping how fantastically playable it is. The low-pressure gaming makes a great escape into a fantasy of a familiar world, hauling cargo hither and yon as an easy excuse to get out on the virtual road. Its America is only a couple of states at the moment and more an impression of the landscape than an actual representation of the cities and towns it covers, but when the lighting is right and the road is being kind, it’s a great place to travel through. American Truck Simulator puts you behind the wheel of the biggest beasts of the road and sets you free to explore in your own way, taking in the scenery while keeping an eye on traffic, and just maybe, even learning to back 18 wheels of pure trucking muscle into its target drop-off point. If you’re going to live a driving fantasy, after all, you might as well fantasize big.

Många i min sociala krets säger att köra lastbil kan likställas med meditation och jag är beredd att hålla med. Det är skönt att bara ge sig iväg ett par timmar i sin egna lastbil, tanka upp den med massvis av diesel, lasta på lite frakt på släpet och bara låta tankarna flyta iväg. Visst är det inte det mest spännande spelet i världen, men likväl behöver det inte vara mer än såhär. Skillnaderna mellan Euro Truck Simulator 2 och det här är inte särskilt stora, men vad gör det när konceptet redan var och är så pass slipat. Snart kommer fler stater vilket är spännande och visst det kommer säkert bli dyrt att köpa allt vilket drar ner betyget i slutändan. Men överlag så är American Truck Simulator ett välutvecklat spel som kommer puttra i bakgrunden för mig under en lång tid. Så ge dig av, veva ner rutan och njut, för den här resan har bara börjat.

Der American Truck Simulator ist ein Bananenprodukt - es reift beim Kunden. Modder machen ihn in den kommenden Monaten zu dem, was der Euro Truck Simulator 2 ist: ein Umfangsmonster, hinter dem sich selbst Kollege Schwerdtel nach 200 verputzten Leberkässemmeln verstecken könnte. Spaß bringt das Spiel aber schon jetzt, ich finde es unglaublich chillig, wie es neudeutsch heißt, fast besser als autogenes Training oder Angeln. Jedenfalls bis zu dem Zeitpunkt, wo mir wieder die Schädeldecke hochgeht und Rauch aus meinen Ohren strömt. Sei es, weil die Polizei teure Passfotos von mir geknipst hat. Sei es, weil sich ein Auto zu weit in die ökologische Nische meines Babys vorwagt und ihm wehtut. Oder wenn ich beim Rangieren agiere wie ein Elefant im Schuhkarton. Auf der einen Seite liefert der American Truck Simulator mir also Entspannung, auf der anderen Seite heftige Emotionen, kurz: Er ist bewegend. Oh Gott, habe ich einen Lkw gerade als mein Baby bezeichnet?

While not much has changed from ETS 2 to American Truck Simulator, the few improvements are helpful. There isn’t enough here that really changed though from game to game. If you enjoyed the last one, this is a lot more of the same, right down to the level up screen, and hiring drivers menu. It’s not a bad game at all, but it essentially more of an expansion rather than a new game. Still, if this type of game interests you at all, it is definitely worth a pick up.

Grając w American Truck Simulator nie sposób odnieść wrażenia, że to zaledwie dodatek do poprzedniej gry. Piękna, ale niezbyt duża mapa, dwie ciężarówki do wyboru na start i praktycznie niezmieniona mechanika rozgrywki. Jeżeli to jednak nasze pierwsze zetknięcie z serią, rozpoczęcie przygody będzie niezwykle satysfakcjonujące.

Ultimately, I still love me some Truck Simulator, and I can’t deny the concept itself has aged quite well. In an industry where “Simulator” has lost all meaning, becoming the trading word of those who peddle cynical joke games via Steam Greenlight, it’s refreshing to see SCS remind us that, once upon a time, a simulation game actually meant something, and had the unique power to make mundanity thrilling – even if the game itself isn’t fundamentally new.

Тем не менее, ATS стоит купить… года через два, большим комплектом со всеми возможными дополнениями и обязательно с внушительной скидкой (к тому же в обе игры совсем скоро добавят поддержку Steam Workshop, и приличных модификаций будет навалом). А сейчас она обрадует только самых преданных фанатов чешской студии.

[Second review] I drove across America (or a section of it), and where before it was a megamix of iconic scenes, this time it was vast landmass and lonely gas stations. I felt bored sometimes, and I liked that boredom. I listened to some of what the people who live in small places I blew right through listen to every day. It was not hateful, but it was not interested in the world either. Perhaps I understand America a little more, just a little. I am still so very scared of what's going to happen. But I feel, once again, that it can be the place of my escapism - if only in games, for now. American Truck Simulator is my game of the year. Again. If we get more states in 2017, it almost certainly will be my game of the year then, too.

American Truck Simulator is a simulation of driving a truck across America, and while it can claim many successes in terms of mechanical authenticity, its most effective simulation is state of mind. That zen-like focus and calm of driving, when every other worry evaporates from your mind. Only the road. Only the music. The music and the road as one.
