Lego Dimensions truly sets a new standard for toys-to-life games. The pure joy of playing with actual Lego bricks (even offline) combined with many innovations that make the Toy Pad peripheral an actual, useful item, sets this game apart from its competitors. Clever and humorous writing and respect given to the original franchises give Lego Dimensions a huge amount of variety such that at least some parts of it should appeal to just about any gamer. If (like most normal, middle-class people) you can afford only one toys-to-life game (and all of its add-ons) this season, Lego Dimensions would be my first recommendation.

Lego Dimensions follows the trend of solid gameplay from developer TT Games while introducing new mechanics with the included toy pad and minifigures. Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldstyle team up on an entertaining and humorous adventure to confront the evil Lord Vortech and his plan to rule all of the various Lego worlds. Lego Dimensions is a worthwhile gameplay experience and investment for both fans of Lego and the included franchises ranging from Ghostbusters and Wizard of Oz to Scooby-Doo and Doctor Who.

Despite the extraneous content, Lego Dimensions is a hit. I haven't laughed this much playing a video game in a long time. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next, and my wife even sat in to watch the story unfold in crazy ways. Whether you just purchase the core set or go bonkers purchasing figures, Lego Dimensions delivers big thrills and fun playability both in the game and on your living-room floor.

TT Games has been playing with Legos since 2005 so it's about time they entered the interactive toy market. Following the success of Skylanders and Disney Infinity, do they have what it takes to empty your bank account too?

(Season 2 review) Lego Dimensions set a new precedent for what a toys-to-life game could be after arriving last year. That excellence continues with the second year of content (or Wave 6 if you've been on from the start), which delivers more of that Lego game charm with more characters and vehicles than ever. With the wide range of interests collected here, there's almost assuredly something for everyone, and that's one of Lego Dimensions' greatest strengths. That it's also fun to play just makes the decision to enter this world that much easier.

A game in which Batman rubs shoulders with the Stay Puft marshmallow man, where Gandalf solves puzzles at Aperture Sciences and Wyldstyle punches orcs, LEGO Dimensions is a smile-inducing mash-up that revels in everything that makes LEGO such a joy.

Much has been made about the astounding array of voice talent featured in Lego Dimensions, the vast stockpile of Lego and Warner Bros. creative works the game draws from and the proven track record of its well-established development team. But what really sets Lego Dimensions apart from the rest, is that it removes the line between toy and video game and has you play in both the real world and virtual one. All of these things come together to create something much better than its interlocking parts. Where the game's innovative designs push forward what it means to blend toys and games into a single experience, the writing and both companies' willingness to dig deep into their vaults, pull the whole game together.

If anything justifies the toys-to-life tag, it's LEGO Dimensions, which thanks to its fresh take on the toy portal, brilliantly varied licences and sets that actually need building, has reinvigorated what is still a relatively new genre. Disney and Skylanders may just have to raise their techy-toy game.

In the first few hours of LEGO Dimensions play time with my six-year-old son, almost half the time was spent on playing with blocks. We built the portal together. We built the Batmobile, and then opened up a Scooby Doo pack and built the power-up Scooby Snack and Mystery Machine located within. We then hit the Wizard of Oz world, with Batman's head comically poking out the top of the Mystery Machine. In any game within the toys-to-life genre, there's sometimes an unspoken question: is this also a great toy or just a great game? In LEGO Dimensions' case, the answer is easy: it's both.

The base game, though, remains superb – the ways Dimensions harnesses what Lego does best to blend the tangible with the digital is consistently delightful. Dimensions may be the best Lego game yet, but like the sweets at the supermarket counter, or those tantalising extras in the latest free-to-play smartphone game, it might prove most talented when it comes to causing friction between parent and child.

IGN (7.7 out of 10) (77%)

LEGO Dimensions’ kitchen-sink approach to packing its worlds full of great characters and fun references consistently left me with a big dumb grin on my face. While the puzzles that required physically moving the pieces became tedious, the act of exploring dozens of locations based on things I’ve adored since my childhood was genuinely entertaining. The collision of worlds is smart, the references are handled with care, and the story is genuinely smart.

I'm sort of torn in LEGO Dimensions. It's one of the most expensive propositions in all of gaming right now, but the gameplay is there and the Starter Pack stands on its own. While the campaign can be a bit uneven at times, the always reliable LEGO charm and the innovation of the physical aspect of Dimensions allows it to excel.

Games TM (7 out of 10) (70%)

Sadly, we're now expected to pay extra for an experience that used to be part of the main package. Like Skylanders, you're constantly reminded of the figures you haven't bought and it gradually begins to feel that a large part of the game is locked off, something we can't come to terms with, no matter how good the core game is. LEGO Dimensions may be one of the most entertaining LEGO games yet, but it's going to massively disappoint the hardcore fans that have helped to turn it into such a popular series in the first place. A great game hampered by a new model.

Lego Dimensions is an excellent Lego crossover game, and it's a solid toys-to-life-tie-in. The price is pretty sleep, but Dimensions gives you plenty of reasons to invest.

LEGO Dimensions is well worth consideration for those happy to invest in a new toys-to-life platform. The core content of the Starter Pack gives you plenty to do, though tolerance is required for occasionally overbearing in-game promotion of expensive add-ons. There are moments of brilliance, a few modest levels and some disappointing sections where design is questionable and performance struggles. The positives do outweigh the negatives, though, and in addition to some high points this also sets a new standard in how toys-to-life can bring NFC portals and a video game together in new ways. These toys actually come to life, which promises much for the future.

LEGO Dimensions is filled with promise, but the paywalls and the requirement to regularly interact in-game massively impact upon the final product. Thankfully, this is only the first step of a very long-term plan - there's still plenty of time for the team to balance the paywall and the amount of content per level pack. The team at TT Games has always been fantastic with its fans, happy to take on-board any criticism or suggestion. There would be nothing stopping it from patching more content in for level packs at a later date, either. The core is a solid LEGO title through and through, but it could have been so much more. Cubed3 will cover some of the key level packs very soon.

USgamer (1.5 out of 5) (30%)

LEGO Dimensions feels like the bare minimum required to qualify as a video game in this day and age—it's a shallow, repetitive experience that leans heavily on the appeal of LEGO toys and a dozen very expensive licenses... which probably explains why the $99 starter set only gives you access to a fraction of the total game content. There's nothing necessarily wrong with the toy expansion concept, but Dimensions' only advantage over its better-designed (and less expensive) competitors is the appeal of its license. Between its high cost, lowbrow design, and kid-addicting façade, Dimensions feels downright predatory. But the fanservice is great!
