ReCore is ultimately something worth playing, but much like E.Y.E. Divine Cybermacy or many other experimental shooters you have to stomach a great deal of bad to get to the good. The talent and experience is on display here in the right places, but many ideas are extremely chunkily implemented and lack the fine polish to help them truly stand out. In its current state a full price purchase is definitely hard to justify, but it’s still well worth a look for the breath of fresh air.

I didn’t expect ReCore to be quite as big as it is, and from the looks of things, it’s possible its developers didn’t either. Its world, while interesting to explore for a good while, is ultimately too big with too little happening in it to be a totally serviceable housing for the strong combat and platforming gameplay within. It feels like a great, arcadey action platformer spread across too big a canvas, and it asks you to draw back over the same lines a few too many times

ReCore is a game that had so much potential on the surface and initially gave a very positive impression. The platforming is accurate and satisfyingly responsive, while the combat scratches an itch for those with a taste for the frantic. Unfortunately the game has issues that need solving, not least with the achievement tracking. The campaign is the best part of the game but is halted in its tracks by gates that require players to grind before they can pass. The sole purpose of the game's open world is to be filled with collectibles, while the optional dungeons are inferior versions of their campaign counterparts. Long loading times and other smaller bugs interrupt flow and disrupt the player experience. Then there's the problem of the missing content. If ever a game felt like it was rushed to release, it is this one.

Still, ReCore is breezier, smarter and more accessible than a lot of its money, would-be contemporaries. Traversing its empty open world is a chore, but when the game carries you indoors and places you inside one of its finely tuned dungeon-style levels, it's unquestionably good, old-fashioned fun.

ReCore starts with an intriguing world and a great mix of platforming and RPG elements, but it all falls apart well before the end.

There's a good game buried somewhere in ReCore, but it's lost in the massive inconveniences the game throws at you. From constantly refusing to let the player move on until they complete side content (even in the middle of dungeons) to loading times that put Sonic 2006 to shame. This ensures that ReCore starts off interestingly and ends up horrid.

ReCore has many great ideas and offers an enjoyable experience in most places, however it is let down by its own technical limitations and bad design. ReCore feels like it was made and simply rushed out the door without ever truly ironing out its grating problems which turns something with potential for a future franchise into a bad memory. If you can look past the sanity questioning load times and poor design choices there is fun to be had, but often the obstacles hinder the value of the reward.
